In 62 years, Virginia Brown only has missed three reunions of the 6th U.S. Cavalry Association.
“(I like) just seeing old friends and to see the smiles on the faces of the newer (members),” she said.
Mrs. Brown, 83, lives in Murfreesboro, Tenn., and is the daughter, wife and mother of 6th Cavalry members.

This weekend is the 109th reunion of the nonprofit group. It was organized to honor members of the 6th Cavalry, which has been part of the U.S. Army since 1861 and was a member of Gen. George Patton’s Third Army.
“This is a reunion of veterans that served the United States,” said Kyle Russell, president of the Friends of the 6th Cavalry Museum. “(People should come) to pay homage to their service and to recognize Fort Oglethorpe.”
The Fort Oglethorpe Army base opened in 1905 and was home to the 6th U.S. Cavalry from 1919 until 1942. The base also served as a training center for the Women’s Army Corps and housed prisoners of war during World War II.
Having so many veterans in one place is unique, Museum Director Chris McKeever said.
“So many veterans associations have ceased to exist,” she said. “These people know the history of World War II and the 6th Cavalry like nobody’s business. It is the passing on of history.”
