CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- Cleveland and Bradley County will form a study group on whether to combine some aspects of city and county planning and inspections.
The County Commission approved the idea Monday, and the Cleveland City Council endorsed it a week earlier.
County Planner Corey Divel said some city and county planning and inspection procedures differ.
"But if there's something we can do more efficiently, we should look into that,'' he told county commissioners.
Four of the 14 commissioners voted against the idea.
"Let them run their own department, and we will do our own thing,''Commissioner Howard Thompson said.
The resolution from Commissioner Lisa Stanbery calls for three task force members appointed by the County Commission and three by the City Council.
"The state is getting ready to impose additional restrictions on us as statewide codes enforcement,'' Ms. Stanbery said. "So this would probably bear looking at to prepare for that as well, to see whether we want to opt out of those.''
On other issues Monday, the commission heard fiscal year 2010 budget appeals from department heads. The budget is scheduled for a vote on July 6, after the final draft has been published.
The commission also approved a bond resolution to fund the new Park View Elementary School on Minnis Road as well as renovations and additions at Valley View Elementary and funds for the Cleveland School System.
The commission also approved a contract with Alabama-based Quality Correctional Health Care for inmate medical services.
