Eric Colen Sr.

Eric A. Colen Sr., 52, was called to his eternal home on Sunday, June 14, 2009.

Mr. Colen was a graduate of Brainerd High School and East Tennessee State University where he was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He also attended the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Va. He was then commissioned to a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army where he served 17 years in various leadership positions. He continued his military career to the rank of Major.

Eric was a former president of the Glenwood Neighborhood Association, and in 2006, he was a candidate for the District 9 council seat.

He was preceded in death by his father Arthur Colen Jr.; and his maternal and paternal grandmothers, Mary Towns and Vera Young.

Survivors include his loving wife, Deborah A. Colen; sons, Christopher Sammons, Eric Colen Jr.; daughters, Dessalyn Sammons, Erica Colen; caring mother, Carrie L. Beck; devoted sister, Paula B. Leath; dedicated brothers, Claybrooke Adams, Ismail Shuaib, Maynard Beck, Danny Beck, Mark (Kimberly) Colen; beloved great-aunt, Ethelena Daniels; father and mother-in-law, Howard (Elsie) Oliver; brother and sister-in-law, Charles (Wyleah) Hudson; dedicated cousin, Elbert (Carol) Howard; dear friends, Howard Butler, Percy Jones, Bobby Leverett; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 20, 2009, at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. E.R. Jacks officiating, assisted by the Rev. Alexander Bullard Sr., and Rev. Ronald Harris.

Interment will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at National Cemetery with full military honors and a dove release.

The body will lie in state after noon today at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, with a memorial service to be held by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.

Larry Craig

Charles Larry Craig, 68, of Chattanooga, passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2009.

He was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp.

He was employed by Southern Champion Tray, LP.

He was preceded in death by his father, E.R. Craig and survived by his mother, Louise Craig, of Chattanooga.

Larry also is survived by his wife, Linda Craig; three children, Russ Craig and David Craig, of Signal Mountain, and Cindy Jones, of Hixson; two stepsons, Ricky Murphy and Gary Murphy, both of Ringgold; a brother, Marshall Craig, of East Ridge; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 22, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. and Hon. Samuel H. Payne officiating.

Burial will be at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4 until 7 p.m. today, June 20, at the funeral home.

Erlene DeLay

Erlene Willard DeLay, 94, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Health Center At Standifer Place.

She was born May 24, 1915.

She was a charter member of Brainerd Church of Christ. This strong religious woman will be remembered as an excellent seamstress, painter, homemaker and supporter of the needy. A near death childhood experience profoundly increased her dedication to Christ. All of her children are Christians.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom Preston and Sallie Mingle Willard; siblings, Dessie Willard, Taylor Willard, Ruby Davenport, Virgin Moore and France Willard.

Survivors include her husband of 71 years, Samuel Ayers DeLay; sons, Joe Don DeLay and wife Kay, of Henderson, Tenn., and Sam Jan L. DeLay and wife, Sarah, of Chattanooga; daughter, Barbara Faye DeLay Sliger and husband, Robert L., of Madisonville, Tenn.; sister, Ruth Willard Alford, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Daphne DeLay Dickinson and husband, Erik, of Birmingham, Ala., Cecile Sliger Wimberley and husband, Matthew, of Kingsport, Tenn., Katie DeLay and Joseph DeLay, both of Chattanooga; three great-grandchildren, Cole and Spencer Dickinson, of Birmingham, Ala., and Michael Ayers Wimberley, of Kingsport, Tenn.; a score of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. today at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, 404 S. Moore Road with Minister Terry David Davenport officiating.

The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ona Elsea

Pearl Ona Parton Elsea, 84, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2009, in a local health care facility.

A lifelong resident of Soddy-Dasiy, she was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church. She was born April 27, 1925 to the late Sam and Pearl Parton. Ona worked for many years at Miller Brothers and the Volunteer Army and Ammunition Plant. She was a talented cake baker and designer. She loved canning, cooking and doing for others. Ona will be missed very much.

Her husband, James A. Elsea, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her sister, Imogene P. Stout, of Brainerd; nephews, Gary H. Stout, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Stan F. Stout, of Cumming, Ga.; grandnephews, William H. Stout and Charles S. Stout, both of Cumming, Ga.

Services will be Monday, June 22, 2009, at 11:30 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Robert Gilbert officiating.

Burial will follow at National Cemetery.

Visitation is Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dorothy Genung

Dorothy Butler Genung, 87, of Chattanooga, died Friday, June 19, 2009, at her residence.

A lifelong resident of Chattanooga, she was a graduate of Tyner High School and East Tennessee State Teachers College. She taught many years at Tyner High School and East Brainerd Elementary School.

Mrs. Genung was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Class. She had been active and was a charter member in Alpha Phi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, retired Teachers of Hamilton County and TOTS of Tyner UMC.

She was preceded in death by her husband, D. James Genung; parents, Atwood and Lula Butler; brother and sister-in-law, Atwood and Virginia Butler.

Survivors are her children, Marcia and Terry Brown, Hixson, Nancy Broom, Ringgold, Don Genung, Chattanooga; grandchildren, Suzanne and Steaven Rogers, Christy and Bill Killeffer, Dara Broom and Matthew Broom; great-grandchildren, Steaven and Gracie Rogers and many beloved nieces and nephews; special lifelong friend, Ethelwyn Arnold.

Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the chapel.

Burial will follow at Chattanooga Memorial Park Cemetery.

Harry M. Johnson, of Chattanooga, died Thursday, June 18, 2009.

Born in Dayton, he lived in Chattanooga since 1968. Veteran of Korea serving in the Air Force, member of White Oak Baptist Church in Chattanooga and was a certified public accountant.

He was preceded in death by parents, Clyde and Salma James Johnson.

Polly Ann Caldwell Kimball, 87, of Signal Mountain, passed away Friday, June 19, 2009, in a local hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hal S. Kimball Jr.; and son, Hal S. “Sandy” Kimball III.

She is survived by her son, Charles T. Kimball and wife, Robin; granddaughters, Allison K. Bishop, K. Elizabeth Kimball; great-granddaughter, Madeline Bishop; brother, Thomas A. Caldwell Jr. and wife, Anne; nephew, Thomas A. Caldwell; niece, Joanne C. Beckman; nephew, Grant Caldwell; and nephew, Craig Caldwell.

Mrs. Kimball was a member of Northside Presbyterian Church. She attended Chattanooga City High School, the University of Chattanooga, and was an alumni of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority. After retiring from the United Way of Chattanooga, she served as a volunteer at Memorial Hospital for many years.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at Northside Presbyterian Church. Reception with the family will follow the service.

MONTEAGLE — Charles Carter Baker Jr., 65, Nashville native and Monteagle resident, went to live with God Wednesday, June 17, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was a graduate of David Lipscomb High School, The University of Tennessee and UT College of Law. He was director of project development at FCF Business Capital in Monteagle. He was a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church in Nashville, attended All Saints Chapel in Monteagle, and married his wife at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Chattanooga. His adventurous, inquisitive and energetic spirit will be greatly missed.

Survived by wife, Jane; daughters, Mimi Baker (Steve) Swank and Emily Baker (Dan) Cox; son, Charles Carter Baker III (Nicole); five grandchildren; and brother, Robert Lyn (Carolyn) Baker.

SPRING CITY — Audrey K. Carver, 66, died Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Baptist Hospital West in Knoxville.

Born in Robbinsville, N.C., she was the daughter of the late James Lymon and Sarah Adams Corbin. Audrey graduated from Robbinsville High School, where she excelled in basketball. In 1969, Audrey and her husband, Glenn, moved from Cumberland City, Tenn., to the Rhea County community. Audrey was employed by First Bank of Tennessee for 18 years before her retirement.

Survivors include her husband, Glenn T. Carver, of Spring City; sons, Michael (Donna) Carver, of Rome, Ga., and Ethan (Tonya) Carver, of Chattanooga; brothers, Verlon Corbin, of Cartersville, Ga., and Ray Corbin, of Ashville, N.C.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

SOUTH PITTSBURG — Alton Gene Stewart Sr., 63, died Thursday, June 18, 2009, in a local hospital.

The son of the late John Mitchell and Clydie Louise Grider Stewart, he was a member of Tabernacle of Praise in Kimball, Tenn. An avid outdoorsman, he loved camping, fishing and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Boilermakers Union and worked for U.S. Stove in Bridgeport, Ala.

He was also preceded in death by his sister, Wanda Webb; and his brother, Carl Stewart.

He is survived by his daughters, Virgie (Mitchell) Swafford and Debra (Eddie) Richardson; sons, Alton Stewart Jr. and James Dewayne Stewart; brothers, Roy Lee (Edna) Stewart and Johnny “Toby” (Debbie) Stewart; ex-wife, Aline McCroslin, all of South Pittsburg; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; special friends, Mack and Pat Burton, of LaPlatta, Md., and Judy Elliott; God-daughters, Crystal Noel Rector and Ashley Cardin; several nieces and nephews.

Hesta Hurt

ROCK SPRING — Hesta M. Hurt, 92, passed away Thursday, June 18, 2009, at a local health care facility.

She was a lifelong resident of North Georgia Communities of Fort Oglethorpe, Boynton and Rock Spring. Mrs. Hurt was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Sixth U.S. Cavalry holding several offices for over 30 years. She was also a member of the Ringgold and Fort Oglethorpe Historical Society and an active volunteer with the “Friends of the Library” in Fort Oglethorpe and a prominent volunteer with the Boynton Elementary School. She also was involved with the Boy scouts while her children were growing up, and she was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Charles Hurt Sr.; and son, Joseph Charles Hurt Jr.

Survivors include her three children, Jo-Ann (Greeley) Ashworth, of Rock Spring, James Edward (Charlotte S.) Hurt, of Temple, Ga., and John W. (Darlene) Hurt, of Rock Spring; daughter-in-law, Kay Hurt, of the Burning Bush Community; sisters, Lois Betty, of Obion, Tenn., and Rebecca Roberts, of Naples, Fla.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held today at 4 p.m. in the South Crest Chapel with the Rev. Michael Thomas officiating.

Interment will follow in Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends today from noon until the funeral hour at the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home & Crematory, Rossville.

David Trotter

CUMMING — David Rodney Trotter, 49, passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2009.

He was a graduate of LakeviewFort Oglethorpe High School Class of 1977 and earned an Associate Degree from Electronics Computer Programming College. He was currently employed as an Optician with The Eye Gallery in the Buckhead area of Atlanta. David was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hiking, canoeing, golf, fishing and biking.

He was preceded in death by his father, David Stanley Trotter.

Survivors include his mother, Vera Trotter of Rossville; two sisters, Lisa Harrison and her husband, John, of Signal Mountain, Janelle Ladina and her husband, Tim, of Sugar Hill, Ga.; and nieces and nephews, Jack, Kathleen and Olivia Harrison, Collin and Camille Ladina; and an abundance of aunts, uncles, cousins and life long friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, 404 S. Moore Road.

Burial will be in Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park.

John Wilkerson

RINGGOLD — John Thomas Wilkerson, 55, passed away Friday, June 19, 2009.

He was born Sept. 21, 1953 to the late Jackson and Irene Wilkerson in Buford, Ga., and was of the Baptist faith. He lived in Lawrenceville, Ga., before moving to the North Georgia area in 1984. He was employed with Council Fire Golf Course for more than 17 years as the Maintenance Operator and enjoyed woodworking.

He was also preceded in death by his sister, Linda Faye Ewing; and one brother, A.J. Wilkerson.

Survivors include his wife of more than 28 years, Joan Weathers Wilkerson; stepdaughter, JoAnna Shepherd, both of Ringgold, Ga.; son, Kevin Wilkerson; daughter, Kim Wilkerson, both of Deluca, Ga.; brothers, Roger Dale Wilkerson, of Chestnut, Ga., and Ralph Wilkerson, of New Hope, Ga.; sisters, Juanita Walden, of Sugar Hill, Ga., Barbara Ann Mathis, of New Hope, Ga., and Helen Rhodes, of Evans, Ga.; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 21, 2009 in the Wallis-Stewart Chapel with Pastor Ricky Studdard and Pastor Alan Swafford officiating.

Burial will follow in Woodstation Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 until 6 p.m. today and prior to the service on Sunday at the funeral home.

FYFFE — Alma Brown Gilbert, 97, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at Crowne Health Care.

A graveside service will be 10 a.m. CDT today, June 20, at Mountain View Memory Garden.
