Barbara Smith, owner of Three Sisters of April on Signal Mountain, has spent 30 years channeling her creative energy into textiles and fine needlework.
"I taught French hand-sewing, knitting, embroidery and any kind of handwork, and I carried imported fabrics and lace," she said.
Three Sisters of April had been a staple at the top of Signal Mountain more than 21 years before Mrs. Smith opened another shop nearby. After nine years at the second location, she reopened Three Sisters of April last November and reinvented its mission.
"I wanted to create a place where artists could come and share their knowledge and skills," she said. "I've been holding workshops, demonstrations and classes through the winter and spring, and have some exciting things planned this summer."
On Thursday from noon to 2 p.m., Linda Kerlin will demonstrate a special pouring technique with acrylics. Olga Satterfield will demonstrate crazy-quilt construction from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday.
Susan Parry will demonstrate glass blowing and sculpting on July 16 (4-7 p.m.) and on July 17 (2-5 p.m.).
Demonstrations are free.
Mrs. Smith has filled the gallery space with paintings, items made at Lone Oak Senior Community Center, jewelry, art glass, wearable art, sculpture and Ms. Satterfield's crazy-quilt constructions and Old World Santas.
"It's a mix of fine art and fine craft, similar to what you would find in Asheville," said Mrs. Smith.
To sign up for workshops, call 886-1589.
Three Sisters of April, 411 Wood St., is open 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
