Gary Adams
Gary Bennett Adams, 61, of Falling Water, passed away on Friday, June 19, 2009, at his residence.
He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area. Gary was a truck driver for many years before being employed with Woodbridge Foam Fabricating for six years as a machine operator.
He was preceded in death by his father, Benny Adams.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Anne Adams; daughter and son-in-law, Julianne and Corey Stapleton, of Falling Water; mother, Virginia “Jenny” Adams, of Falling Water; brother, James Adams of Chattanooga; sister, Alice Foeh, of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Logan, Levi and Luke Stapleton.
Services will be Monday, June 22, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Deddy Owensby and Kenny Adams officiating.
Burial will follow at Levi Cemetery.
Visitation is today from 2-5 and 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Bertie Mae Clift, 93, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away on Friday, June 19, 2009, in a local hospital.
She was a member of New Salem Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Clift.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Jan Clift, of Soddy-Daisy, and Bobby and Sylvia Clift, of Chattanooga; along with three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be Monday, June 22, 2009, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ted Painter officiating.
Entombment will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Brent Clift, Jimmy Clift, Steve Clift, Blane Barnes, David Owens and Steven Clift serving as pallbearers.

Mary C. Doyle, 87, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away in her sleep, Saturday, June 20, 2009.
She was a member of the Rock Spring United Methodist Church and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Georgia Chapter, for many years. She loved making quilts for her family and friends.
Her husband, Harold R. Doyle; parents, J.F. and Bessie Carlock; sister, Juanita Ukena; and a brother, Bill Carlock, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Callahan; daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Edd Reddy, Kathy and Bill Eaves; brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Mary Jane Carlock; brothers, Jack Carlock, J.D. Carlock; sisters, Katherine Carlock, Alice Hatch, Jessie Crawford; grandchildren, Scot Hackney, Chad Hackney, John Reddy, Heather Juarez, Chris McDougal, Casey Callahan; four great-grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Mattie Pearl Ellison, 83, of Chattanooga, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 17 2009.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis N. Ellison; parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Mitchell; daughters, Mildred and Patricia Ellison who resided in Detroit, Mich., for many years; a son, David Ellison of Chattanooga.
She is survived by daughters, Mary (Orlando) Williams, Pearlie (Rufus) Jones, Janice (James) Ballard, Cheryl (Ted) Abernathy, Angia (Michael) Armour and Yolanda Garrett, of Chattanooga; sons, Willis N. Ellison Jr., of Detroit, Mich., Robert (Barbara) Ellison, Kenneth Eillison, Charles Charleston, of Chattanooga; 29 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; special caregivers, Ms. Shirley Pinkerson, Ms. Elvina Watley, Ms. Rita Harrison, Ms. Kim Pierce, Ms. Christi Calhoun and Ms. Loyce Lovelace.

Pearl Ona Parton Elsea, 84, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2009, in a local health care facility.
A lifelong resident of Soddy-Dasiy, she was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church. She was born April 27, 1925 to the late Sam and Pearl Parton. Ona worked for many years at Miller Brothers and the Volunteer Army and Ammunition Plant. She was a talented cake baker and designer. She loved canning, cooking and doing for others. Ona will be missed very much.
Her husband, James A. Elsea, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her sister, Imogene P. Stout, of Brainerd; nephews, Gary H. Stout, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Stan F. Stout, of Cumming, Ga.; grand nephews, William H. Stout and Charles S. Stout, both of Cumming, Ga.

Edith Perry Evans, 89, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2009, in a local healthcare facility.
She was a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She had been a hairdresser for over 30 years in the Chattanooga area and was employed with Cinderella Beauty Shop for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Erskin Evans; parents, George W. Perry Sr. and Jodie Perry; brothers, George W. Perry Jr. and Jack Perry; sisters, Mamie Ruth Wilson and Betty Pugh.
Survivors include her sister, Elizabeth Coole and her husband, Dennis, of Chattanooga; and a brother, James Perry, and his wife, Shirley, of Chattanooga,several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 404 South Moore Road with the Rev. Lanny R. Johnson officiating.

Dorothy Genung
Dorothy Butler Genung, 87, of Chattanooga, died Friday, June 19, 2009, at her residence.
A lifelong resident of Chattanooga, she was a graduate of Tyner High School and East Tennessee State Teachers College. She taught many years at Tyner High School and East Brainerd Elementary School.
Mrs. Genung was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Class. She had been active and was a charter member in Alpha Phi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, retired Teachers of Hamilton County and TOTS of Tyner UMC.
She was preceded in death by her husband, D. James Genung; parents, Atwood and Lula Butler; brother and sister-in-law, Atwood and Virginia Butler.
Survivors are her children, Marcia and Terry Brown, Hixson, Nancy Broom, Ringgold, Don Genung, Chattanooga; grandchildren, Suzanne and Steaven Rogers, Christy and Bill Killeffer, Dara Broom and Matthew Broom; great-grandchildren, Steaven and Gracie Rogers and many beloved nieces and nephews; special lifelong friend, Ethelwyn Arnold.
Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the chapel.
Burial will follow at Chattanooga Memorial Park Cemetery.

Amy Elizabeth Haskew, 34, died on Tuesday, June 16, 2009.
Amy was a 1987 graduate of Hixson High School. Amy was a kind and generous lady, who loved animals as much as life itself. There was never a dog or cat that was without a home, that she didn’t take in. Amy had many friends in all walks of life, and never met a stranger. Amy was truly a Christian lady with a “Heart of Gold.”
Amy was preceded in death by her mother, Georgia B. Haskew.

May Houck
May Temple Houck passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, June 18, 2009.
She was born on December 22, 1915, in Chattanooga to Morris Eugene Temple and Mae Waldrop Temple.
She married the late Theodore L. Montague Jr. in 1941 and was widowed in 1964.
She was married to the late Richard Henry Houck from 1970 until his death in 2001.
A graduate of Girls Preparatory School and the University of Georgia, Mrs. Houck was an active member of Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church, the Junior League of Chattanooga and the Lookout Mountain Garden Club.
Mrs. Houck was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, John W. Temple and Frederick H. Temple; her sister, Isabel Temple Smartt; and her stepdaughter, Janice Houck Eldridge.
She is survived by her sons, Theodore (Elaine) Montague III, Dwight (Joy) Montague, and Langdon (Brooke) Montague; her daughters, May Montague (Edward L.) Mitchell and Charlotte Montague (Thomas) Shields; her stepdaughter, Katherine Houck Trent; her stepson, Richard Houck Jr; her fifteen grandchildren, William (Leah) Mitchell, May (Gregory) McGuire, Preston (Rachael) Mitchell, Madison Mitchell, Rebecca (James) Nolen, Emily (Robert) Ellis, Betty Montague, Katherine Montague, Thomas Shields III, Patrick (Samantha) Shields, Brooks Montague, Henry Montague, Robert Eldridge, Margaret Eldridge Stultz, and Leighton Trent; and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Polly Ann Caldwell Kimball, 87, of Signal Mountain, passed away Friday, June 19, 2009, in a local hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hal S. Kimball Jr.; and son, Hal S. “Sandy” Kimball III.
She is survived by her son, Charles T. Kimball and wife, Robin; granddaughters, Allison K. Bishop, K. Elizabeth Kimball; great-granddaughter, Madeline Bishop; brother, Thomas A. Caldwell Jr. and wife, Anne; nephew, Thomas A. Caldwell; niece, Joanne C. Beckman; nephew, Grant Caldwell; and nephew, Craig Caldwell.
Mrs. Kimball was a member of Northside Presbyterian Church. She attended Chattanooga City High School, the University of Chattanooga, and was an alumni of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority. After retiring from the United Way of Chattanooga, she served as a volunteer at Memorial Hospital for many years.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at Northside Presbyterian Church. Reception with the family will follow the service.

Dr. Louis Ulin
Dr. Louis Ulin, 94, of Chattanooga, died Saturday, June 20, 2009 at his home.
Dr. Ulin was a graduate of Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia, Pa., and practiced medicine in Chattanooga for over 50 years and was Board Certified in General Surgery.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Medical unit of the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice G. Ulin; and a brother, Dr. Alex Ulin.
Survivors include his daughter, Allison Ulin Lynch, Chattanooga; son, Dr. Louis Scott Ulin, Dania Beach, Fla.; brother, Dr. Steve Ulin, and sister-in-law, Ellie Ulin, Tucson, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Selma Cash Paty; grandchild, Kate Lynch, Chattanooga; grandchildren, Laura Ulin, Margate, Fla., Shaun Scott Ulin and Tristan Ulin, Dania Beach, Fla., and several great-grandchildren.

He managed the Armstrong Ferry Campground in Meigs County.

LAYNE’S COVE — Billy Boyd Edwards, 64, passed away at his home on Friday, June 19, 2009.
Billy had been a deputy with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department and had retired as a safety inspector with Yellow Freight. He was a member of Felix Grundy Lodge F & AM.
Survivors are son and daughter-in-law, Gregory Wayne (Mindy) Edwards, Lebanon; sisters, Bettye Doris (Tom), Cleveland, Ohio, and Ruth Ann Roberts, Cleveland; six grandchildren, Kendra Lea Hiett, Austin Lea Edwards. Samantha Nichole Edwards, Kaylei Gweyn Edwards, William Landon Edwards and Mackenzie Chyanne Hudgins, several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life service will be 2 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. J.C. Stewart and others officiating.

DAYTON — Beatrice Almira Freels, 95, passed away Friday, June 19, 2009.
She was a longtime resident of Rhea county and was a member of New Union Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Freels; six brothers, Claxton, Homer, Berlin, Ernest, Joe, and Delmas Moneymaker; two sisters, Berniece Stinecipher, and Mary Alberta Moneymaker.
Survivors are two sons, Ralph Bentley Freels, Edsel (Shirley) Freels; two daughters, Esther Garrison, Mary (Emery Lowe) Daniels, all of Dayton; brother, Rector Moneymaker, Lake City, Tenn.; sister, Bonnie Campbell, Concord, Tenn.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Services are 1 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton, with Dr. Danny Ruehling officiating.

RINGGOLD — Margarette “Margie” Frye, 71, passed away June 19, 2009, at her residence.
She was a member of Frawley Road Baptist Church and was retired from Bi-Lo’s bakery department after nineteen years of service.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lori Frye; and parents, John and Elsie Pressnell.

ROSSVILLE — James William Sears, 76, passed away Friday, June 19, 2009, at his residence.
A resident of the North Georgia area for the past 52 years, he was a member of Midway Baptist Church in Ft. Oglethorpe and a former employee of Eslinger Construction. He also was formerly employed with Elcom Inc., Brock and Blevins Co. and Lucy Boiler Co.
Mr. Sears was a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he served during the Korean War, during which time he received the Korean Service Medal, U.N. Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal and 2 Bronze Service Medals.
He especially loved his wife, children and grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his father, William Brank Sears; mother, Mary Alice Kidd Sears; stepmother, Edith Wilkerson Sears; and twin infant brothers.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Dell Townsel Sears, of Rossville; daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Mike Parrish, of Chickamauga; two sons and daughter-in-law, Lynn and Angie Sears, of Chickamauga, and Greg Sears, of Cumming; five grandchildren, Stephanie Moss, Dereck Sears, Colton Sears, Ray Parrish and Melissa Sexton; and five great-grandchildren, Isaac Ott, Gage Sears, Austin Sears, Nicolas Parrish and Jared Moss.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Kenneth Brown Jr. and Chaplain Dwight Wilson officiating.

Claire Massey
LONGWOOD, Fla. — Claire Campbell Massey, 65, passed away on Monday, June 15, 2009, after a long battle with breast cancer.
She was a devoted mother, friend, and consummate professional in the field of social work.
Claire was born in Chattanooga on March 8, 1944, to Winston and Elizabeth Massey.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents, who were professors at the University of Chattanooga. Her father served as the Guerry Professor of Mathematics and Chairman of the Math Department. Her mother was a professor of French.
Claire graduated from Chattanooga High School in 1962 and was valedictorian of her class. She completed her undergraduate degree at Rhodes College in 1966, and received her Masters in Social Work from Tulane University in 1968. In the ensuing years, Claire worked as a social worker in the mental health field and with Orange County Public Schools. At the University of Central Florida, she served on the Community Advisory Board and was the Field Education Coordinator for the School of Social Work. She retired from the University of Central Florida in December 2005. Claire was also a member of the Council on Social Work Education and a former board member of The Grove.
She was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church and attended Episcopal Church of the Resurrection for the last 25 years. Her participation in the choir was one of the joys of her life.
Claire is survived by her daughter Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Beagles Pierson, and husband Kevin; her son, Thomas Charles Beagles, and fiance, Beth Sprinkle; and granddaughter, Claire Julia Pierson.
The family would like to express appreciation for the excellent and loving care of all of Claire’s doctors, nurses, and caregivers. We would also like to thank Claire’s family and friends for their love and support.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2009, at noon at Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, 251 East Lake Brantley Drive, Longwood, FL 32779.

MELROSE, Fla. — Ralph Lee Yates, 68, died peacefully on Friday, June 12, 2009, in Suwanee, Ga., where he was visiting his daughter and family.
He was surrounded at death by loving family members including a precious new-born granddaughter, Rachael Serena. Crossroads Hospice of Atlanta, and Haven Hospice of Gainesville, Fla., helped to make his final days a peaceful and cherished memory.
Ralph was born in Gaston County, N.C. on March 17, 1941. He graduated from the University of North Carolina with a BS degree in Math and from the University of Florida with an MST in Math. He later attended Bettis Nuclear Reactor Engineering School in Pittsburg, Pa., and served four years in the Navy working for Admiral Rickover in the Navy Nuclear Propulsion Program. He worked for 19 years as a Power Supply Engineer and manager at the Tennessee Valley Authority in Chattanooga, and for five years at General Electric Corporation in Schenectady, N.Y. where he worked as a Consulting Engineer in environmental and nuclear power engineering. He was an active member in the American Nuclear Society and The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond B. Yates and Nellie Mae Rigler Yates; and by his brother, Roger Wade Yates.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Laura Hughes Yates; son, Douglas Scott Yates and wife, Audrey; daughter, Carrie Yates Anderson and husband, Ron; brothers, Gary D. Yates and wife, Pat, and Ray W. Yates and wife, Hilda; sister-in-law, Judy W. Yates; mother-in-law, Woodie D. Hughes; brother-in-law, Ray C. Hughes and wife, Anna Marie; aunts, Margaret Nixon and Sarah Pennington; beloved grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Travis, Rachael and Lauren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ralph was a member of Unitarian Universalist Church of Chattanooga. A gathering for family and friends will be held at a later date to recall and celebrate his life and to thank all those whose care, love and compassion sustained him throughout his lengthy illness.
