Bertie Clift

Bertie Mae Clift, 93, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away on Friday, June 19, 2009, in a local hospital.

She was a member of New Salem Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Clift.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Jan Clift, of Soddy-Daisy, and Bobby and Sylvia Clift, of Chattanooga; along with three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today, June 22, 2009, in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ted Painter officiating.

Mary C. Doyle, 87, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away in her sleep, Saturday, June 20, 2009.

Ona Elsea

Pearl Ona Parton Elsea, 84, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2009, in a local healthcare facility.

A lifelong resident of Soddy Dasiy, she was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church. She was born April 27, 1925, to the late Sam and Pearl Parton. Ona worked for many years at Miller Brothers and the Volunteer Army and Ammunition Plant. She was a talented cake baker and designer. She loved canning, cooking and doing for others. Ona will be missed very much.

Her husband, James A. Elsea, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her sister, Imogene P. Stout, of Brainerd; nephews, Gary H. Stout, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Stan F. Stout, of Cumming, Ga.; grand-nephews, William H. Stout and Charles S. Stout, both of Cumming.

Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. today, June 22, 2009, in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Robert Gilbert officiating.

Burial will follow at National Cemetery.

Amy Haskew

Amy Elizabeth Haskew, 34, died on Tuesday, June 16, 2009.

Amy was a 1987 graduate of Hixson High School. Amy was a kind and generous lady, who loved animals as much as life itself. There was never a dog or cat that was without a home that she didn’t take in. Amy had many friends in all walks of life, and never met a stranger. Amy was truly a Christian lady with a “Heart of Gold.”

Amy was preceded in death by her mother, Georgia B. Haskew.

Surviving spouse, Bill Bradford, of Houston, Texas; Dad and stepmother, Gary and Rita Haskew, Chattanooga; mother-in-law, Donna Bradford, Oklahoma; sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer (Don) Demba, of Atlanta; uncles Jerre Haskew (Barbara), Greg Haskew (Nikki), of Chattanooga; Aunt Sara Bukema (Calvin), of Baltimore, Md.; also several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Chattanooga Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Darrell Davenport officiating.

The family and friends will depart the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in a procession to Chattanooga Memorial Park Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Chris Johnson, Greg Johnson, Foster Yates, Russell Bean, Phil Alsbrook and Boomer Brown.

May Houck

May Temple Houck passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, June 18, 2009.

She was born on Dec. 22, 1915, in Chattanooga to Morris Eugene Temple and Mae Waldrop Temple.

She married the late Theodore L. Montague Jr. in 1941 and was widowed in 1964.

She was married to the late Richard Henry Houck from 1970 until his death in 2001.

A graduate of Girls Preparatory School and the University of Georgia, Mrs. Houck was an active member of Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church, the Junior League of Chattanooga and the Lookout Mountain Garden Club.

Mrs. Houck was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, John W. Temple and Frederick H. Temple; her sister, Isabel Temple Smartt; and her stepdaughter, Janice Houck Eldridge.

She is survived by her sons, Theodore (Elaine) Montague III, Dwight (Joy) Montague, and Langdon (Brooke) Montague; her daughters, May Montague (Edward L.) Mitchell and Charlotte Montague (Thomas) Shields; her stepdaughter, Katherine Houck Trent; her stepson, Richard Houck Jr; her 15 grandchildren, William (Leah) Mitchell, May (Gregory) McGuire, Preston (Rachael) Mitchell, Madison Mitchell, Rebecca (James) Nolen, Emily (Robert) Ellis, Betty Montague, Katherine Montague, Thomas Shields III, Patrick (Samantha) Shields, Brooks Montague, Henry Montague, Robert Eldridge, Margaret Eldridge Stultz, and Leighton Trent; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2009, in the Fellowship Hall of Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church, followed by a memorial service at noon.

Nell Hunter

Nell Goldie Hunter, 91, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2009.

She was of the Baptist faith and was retired from Standard Coosa Thatcher Co. She was an active member of the textile union for over 20 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe Hunter.

Surviving relatives are son, Jimmy Hunter, of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Cynthia Hunter and Jake Hunter; niece, Gale Baehr; stepdaughter and longtime caregiver, Linda Henderson, of Chattanooga.

William Stephens

William Wayne Stephens, a Chattanooga resident, died Friday, June 5, 2009, at the age of 67.

His life was remarkable, sometimes arduous and an inspiration to many of those who knew him. He would say often, “it’s been a blast.”

Bill’s legacy will be the people he touched in his lifetime. He was above all, an adoring father and loving brother. His kindness, generous spirit and humor will be remembered by the daughter, son, grandchild, brothers, sisters, extended family and many friends left behind.

Dr. Louis Ulin

Dr. Louis Ulin, 94, of Chattanooga, died Saturday, June 20, 2009 at his home.

Dr. Ulin was a graduate of Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia, Pa., and practiced medicine in Chattanooga for over 50 years and was board certified in general surgery.

He was a veteran of World War II serving in the medical unit of the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice G. Ulin; and a brother, Dr. Alex Ulin.

Survivors include his daughter, Allison Ulin Lynch, Chattanooga; son, Dr. Louis Scott Ulin, Dania Beach, Fla.; brother, Dr. Steve Ulin, and sister-in-law, Ellie Ulin, Tucson, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Selma Cash Paty; grandchild, Kate Lynch, Chattanooga; grandchildren, Laura Ulin, Margate, Fla., Shaun Scott Ulin and Tristan Ulin, Dania Beach, Fla., and several great-grandchildren.

She was a bank teller at Merchants Bank.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Pickard; parents, S.B. and Amanda Grant Johnson; two brothers, Billy Johnson and Cecil Johnson; and one sister, Viola Jones.

She is survived by one son, John David Pickard Sr., Chattanooga; two grandchildren, John David Pickard Jr. and Jackie Barnes; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Grissom Funeral Home with the Rev. David Fasig officiating.

Pearl Sise

OAK RIDGE — Pearl Louise Sise, 101, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Harriman Health and Rehab Center.

She was born March 20, 1908, in Lenoir City, the daughter of the Rev. Barney Winter Stewart and Artie Bell O’Neil Stewart.

Mrs. Sise retired from the Oak Ridge School System, where she worked as a secretary. She was a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir for 80 years. She enjoyed activities at the Senior Center, bowling, playing putt-putt, pool and fishing. She and husband Ed were well known for their portrayal of Minnie Pearl and Grandpa Jones in the senior citizen Ragtime Band.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, George Hiram Cobb, in 1975; second husband, Edward Sisem, in 2006; son, Billy Roger Cobb; sisters, Helen Shelton, Mary Elizabeth Stewart and Gertrude Smith; and a brother, Paul Stewart.

She is survived by son, James Ronald Cobb, of Kingston, Tenn., and his fiancé, Tammy Rosado, who was her longtime caretaker; daughter, Dorothy Lee Barker, of Greenwood, S.C., numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and earlier care-takers, Jennifer and Nancy, whom were dear to her.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at Weatherford Mortuary.

The funeral service will follow at 8 p.m.

Osbie Bethune

TRENTON — Brinie Osbie Bethune, 78, passed away Friday June 19, 2009, following a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, retired from the United States Naval Reserves and Tri State Carpenters, a member of Carpenters Local No. 74 and Navy Seabee Veterans of America. Known for his patriotic spirit and community involvement, Osbie will be missed by many.

For most of his life, he was involved with several military organizations. He served as commander in the Sons of Confederate Veterans and was instrumental in the creation of the Veterans Memorial Park in Trenton. As commander of the American Legion Post 106 for several years, he was responsible for the construction of the Activity Building, which is used extensively by members and community alike.

Involved with the Dade County Historical Society, his passion to preserve historical information was evident by his wealth of knowledge about the community and its rich history.

In 1992, the Georgia General Assembly recognized Mr. Bethune as a distinguished citizen for his love of the United States of America and for his work on heritage preservation. Family and friends will remember him for his wit and charm and the love he had for music and singing.

Mr. Bethune was preceded in death by his parents, Orbie and Ruby Bethune; son, Dwight Bethune; sisters, Mary Ruth Weldon, and Ollie Mae Gass; brother, Verlin Bethune.

Survivors include daughters, Vickie R. Bethune, of LaFayette, Ga., Verana D. Barron, of Dalton, Ga., Karen L. Shepard, of Fort Mills, S.C., Beverly J. Hawkins, of Wildwood, Ga., and Onvil M. Moore, of Sand Mountain; son, Jerry H. Bethune, of Trenton; sisters, Onvil Robinson, of Chattanooga, and Renee Richard, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; brothers, Davis Bethune, of Higdon, Ala., and James Bethune of Dutton, Ala.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

A special thank you is extended to his dear friend, Gladys Satterfield, for her steadfast friendship.

Funeral services will be held at noon EDT Tuesday in Moore Funeral Home Chapel with Virgil Stone officiating.

Interment with military honors will be at 2 p.m. EDT in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

RINGGOLD — James Lester Breeden, 84, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2009, at his residence.

A lifelong resident of the North Georgia area, he was a former employee of Cutter Laboratories, where he worked for 19 years, and was a member of the Ringgold United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Mamie Breeden; son, Danny Breeden; daughter, Janet McAllister Gordon; grandson, Jeff Breeden; sister, Gladyce Chapman; his caregiver, Darlene Layne, of Ringgold; and two granddaughters, Amy and Kim.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. today at Varnell Cemetery in Varnell, Ga., with Brother Tim Layne officiating.

Rubie Hice

DALTON — Rubie Gray Hice, 67, passed away Sunday, June 21, 2009, at her residence.

She was the daughter of the late Glenn and Lena Crowe Gray and was preceded in death by her brothers, Hershel Gray and Doyle Gray.

Rubie was a devoted wife, mother, sister and aunt.

She was a member of the Dalton First Baptist Church and the Dot Reich Sunday School Class. She had a long career in the banking industry, working in Atlanta and in Dalton at Dalton Whitfield Bank and First Bank of Dalton. Rubie was a 1961 graduate of LaFayette High School and loved to work in her flower garden.

She is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Robert Hice, of Dalton; son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Jen Hice, of Dalton; sisters and brother-in-law, Christine Gray Cantrell, of Huntsville, Ala., Carolyn Gray, of Dalton, and Jackie (Gray) and Ron Ebright of Springville, Tenn.; nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Dalton First Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Wilson officiating.

Burial will follow in Whitfield Memorial Gardens with Brian Doran, Doyle Pritchett, Roy Reeves, Greg Gray, Mike Gray, Freemont Priest and Bob Roper serving as pallbearers.

RINGGOLD — Kenyon Garnett Pate, infant son of Joshua and Jessica Pate, passed away Friday, June, 19, 2009, at his residence.

He was a lifelong resident of Rising Fawn, loved hunting, fishing, and playing golf. He was of the Baptist faith.
