A Fort Oglethorpe police officer shot in the back this morning has been identified as Mitchell Moore, according to police.

Fort Oglethorpe Police Chief David Eubanks said earlier today that Officer Moore is expected to be released soon from Erlanger hospital.

The suspect was also shot during the incident, which took place in the parking lot of the Chick-fil-A restaurant on Battlefield Parkway, according to a restaurant manager.

The suspect died about 10:46 a.m., police said. His body will be taken to Atlanta for an autopsy, according to authorities. His name has not been released.

The restaurant manager said the shooting occurred around 10 a.m.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and local police are on the scene interviewing witnesses.

Fort Oglethorpe Mayor Ronnie Cobb said a Walker County deputy had pulled the suspect over on a traffic stop. He said the suspect had outstanding warrants in that county for aggravated stalking.

Mayor Cobb said the deputy called for backup from the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department.

When the officer arrived, the suspect said he did not want to be taken into custody. Mayor Cobb said the officer atempted to used a Taser gun on the suspect. The shot missed and struck the suspect's truck.

Officer Moore's body armor deflected the shot.

Both men were transported to a local hospital.

The manager said no one in the restaurant was injured, but several of the patrons were shaken up.

“We are all just praying for them right now,” she said.
