U.S. Xpress lays off 14 office staff

Chattanooga-based U.S. Xpress Enterprises has laid off 14 people, according to officials of the trucking company.

The positions were all office support staff in Chattanooga, said company spokesman Greg Thompson. The company has 941 people employed in Chattanooga.

The slowdown in the nation's economy led to the layoffs this month, Mr. Thompson said. None are drivers.

"There's some that are leaving through attrition and we are not hiring others to replace them," he said. "We are not growing the fleet right now; the economy is pretty flat."

U.S. Xpress employs more than 10,000 workers across the country, 7,000 of them drivers.
