Lookout Lodge 29, Prince Hall F&AM, partnered with Outback Steakhouse for a fundraiser the month of May, "Outback Experience." Proceeds funded two scholarships, $500 each, to graduating seniors at Tyner Academy, Branden Sutton and Damond Torrey.
The scholarships were presented recently during a dinner of Masonic lodge members at Outback. Among those attending were Andrew Jackson, Grand Senior Warden, state of Tennessee Prince Hall Masons, F&AM; James Baldwin, District Grand Deputy, state of Tennessee Prince Hall Masons; and Greg Burch, Worshipful Master, Lookout Lodge 29.
Littlejohn earns medical degree
Jayne Littlejohn of LaFayette, Ga., received a Doctor of Medicine degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia during spring commencement exercises.
Dr. Littlejohn is the daughter of Ross and Ellen Littlejohn of LaFayette. She is a graduate of LaFayette High School, and received a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Georgia.
She began her internship in internal medicine this month at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.
End-of-year school honors announced
* Michael Brown, son of Michael and Debbie Brown, has been invited to attend People to People World Leadership forum in Washington, D.C. The program allows highly motivated middle-school students to develop leadership skills while learning more about American government.
Michael is a graduate of Bright School, where he won the DAR Good Citizenship Award. He will attend McCallie School this fall.
* National Society of High School Scholars announces two area students have been selected for membership.
They are McMinn County High School student Heather Larson of Charleston, Tenn., and Hixson High School student Andrew J. Gennett. He is the son of Diana and James Gennett.
* Four area students were among the 77 recognized during Bryan College's Honors Day.
Emily Britton, daughter of Eddie Britton and Karin Britton, received the Brynoff Scholarship in English. Dana Seeley, daughter of Douglas and Dawn Seeley of Cleveland, Tenn., received the Hilltop Players Senior Award.
Melissa Brown, daughter of Daniel and Janet Brown, received the Robert and Nancy Spoede Sanctity of Human Life Award. Rachel Smith, daughter of Scott and Margaret Smith, received the Ralph E. and Rebecca H. Toliver MK Scholarship.
* Dr. Todd Timberlake and Dr. Michael Cooley received top faculty and staff awards during Berry College's honors convocation.
Dr. Timberlake received the Vulcan Teaching Excellence Award, while Dr. Cooley earned the Eleana M. Garrett Award for Meritorious Advising and Caring.
Other staff and faculty members honored were Lindsey Taylor, Staff Member of the Year by Berry's Student Government Association; Dr. John Azar-Dickens and Dr. Eric Sands, who shared the same award for faculty.
* Joshua Muthalali, Katherine Amato and Breanna Dillon were named recipients of the F.J Lee, Charles Paul Conn and Zeno C. Tharp Awards, respectively, at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn.
Guster earns law degree
James Micah Guster received his juris doctor degree from the University of Arkansas School of Law in Fayetteville, Ark., during commencement exercises.
Mr. Guster is the son of Ronald and Imogene Guster. He is a graduate of McCallie School and received his bachelor's degree from Tennessee State University.
He is employed by the U.S. Department of Justice in Little Rock, Ark.
Susan Palmer Pierce is a reporter and columnist in the Life department. She began her journalism career as a summer employee 1972 for the News Free Press, typing bridal announcements and photo captions. She became a full-time employee in 1980, working her way up to feature writer, then special sections editor, then Lifestyle editor in 1995 until the merge of the NFP and Times in 1999.
