Mark Alexander

Mark David Alexander, 90, passed away on Friday, June 26, 2009.

He was the last surviving son of Sale Creek Church of God pioneer minister, Rev. Samuel Logan Alexander. Mr. Alexander was a veteran of WWII and a retiree of Combustion Engineering. He was well known as owner/breeder and promoter of championship quality equines in the Tennessee Walking Horse and Spotted Saddle Horse Associations. His reputation as a bass singer of Southern Gospel music was well known in the tri-state area; he was a member of the “Travis Quartet” of Dayton, Tenn. He was proud to be a past president of the Sale Creek Lions Club, and former member of the Chattanooga Beekeepers Association.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Roselyn Gann Alexander; parents, Samuel Logan Pinckney (Anna Mae Carroll) Alexander; sisters, Clarice Fuller, Jessie Underwood; brothers, Hershel, Cornelius, and Harold Alexander; and grandson, Brandon Tackett.

He is survived by two sons, Rex (Carol) Alexander, of Soddy-Daisy, and Edward (Diane) Alexander, of Gilbert, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, June 28, in the funeral home chapel with Bishops Opal Scott and Kenneth Bolton officiating.

Interment will follow in Welsh Cemetery in Sale Creek.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. today, June 27, at the funeral home.

Joe Bryant

Joseph “Joe” Bryant, loving husband, beloved father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday evening, June 24, 2009.

He was born March 17, 1926 in Whitwell, Tenn., the son of the late David M. Bryant and Pearl E. Lewis Bryant.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of over 50 years, Gloria E. Bryant of Valley Head, Ala. He served in World War II in the Army division from June 1944 until June 1946. He received the EAME Theater Ribbon and two bronze stars, good conduct medal, victory medal of World War II and Army of occupation Medal-Germany. He graduated from Tennessee Tech University in Crossville, Tenn. He was a college professor, middle school teacher, salesman at Sears and Roebuck and retired after 28 years of service. He was a member of Spring Creek Road Baptist Church of East Ridge where he served as a Deacon and taught Sunday School for over 50 years.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Houston Jeffrey “Jeff” and Jennifer L. Bryant, of Ooltewah; grandchildren, Jenny K. Bryant, David Lewis Bryant, Charles Ford and Houston Joseph Bryant; also great-grandson, Hunter Bryant. He has one surviving sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Donald Hoback, of Jasper, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday in the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. David Clay and the Rev. James Julian officiating.

Interment will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 until 5 p.m. Sunday, June 28, at the funeral home.

Donnie Casteel

Donald Thomas “Donnie” Casteel, 53, of Ooltewah, died Thursday, June 25, 2009, at his home.

He was born June 20, 1956 in Chattanooga and was of the Baptist faith.

His mother, Wanda McCarroll Casteel preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Perry Casteel; daughter, Stephanie Patterson; granddaughter, Emmaleth Patterson, both of Chattanooga; father, George Thomas “Tommy” Casteel, of Chattanooga; sisters, Johnnie Sue Bryant, of Ringgold; Angie Casteel Stakely, of Chattanooga; brothers, Billy McCarroll, Mike Casteel and Tommy Casteel, all of Chattanooga; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held today at 10 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery with Rev. Paul Jones officiating.

Ruby Cope

Ruby Sumner Cope, 82, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2009, at her home after a brief illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred T. Cope Jr.; and daughter, Jane Cope Abercrombie.

She was born Aug. 5, 1926, to the late Hugh and Janie Davis Sumner in Scottsboro, Ala. Mrs. Cope moved to Chattanooga after graduating from high school. After moving to Chattanooga, she met and married her husband, Fred. They were married 52 years before his passing in 1998. She was a longtime member of Brainerd Baptist Church where she volunteered in the nursery and library for many years. She was a loving homemaker, wife, and mother to her family. She was very proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

She was a member of the Missionary Ridge Chapter UDC, Chief John Ross Chapter NSDAR, and American Ex-Prisoners of War Chattanooga Chapter.

She is survived by daughters, Pat (Jack) Herring, of Signal Mountain, and Susan (Michael) Ledbetter; and son, Tommy (Bonnie) Cope, of Chattanooga. She had seven grandchildren, Michele Herring, of Signal Mountain, Brian Cope, of Boston, Mass., Allan, Joey and Lee Cope, Todd and Chad Ledbetter of Chattanooga; and one great-grandchild, Kadee Cope; nephew, Jim (Deb) Sumner, of Kingston, Tenn., and niece, Charlotte (Terry) Page, of Flintstone, Ga.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to Hospice of Chattanooga, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Brainerd Baptist School. The family would like to thank Dr. Terry Melvin and her staff at Hospice of Chattanooga and Pallative Care for their support and guidance through this difficult time.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home chapel.

Interment will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Roy F. Dinsmore, 53, of Chattanooga, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, June 24, 2009, after a brave battle with cancer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Nellie Dinsmore.

Peggy Ervin Linder, 76, of Ooltewah, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 21, 2009.

A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, she has been a resident of Ooltewah for the past 30 years and was a member of Ooltewah Baptist Church. She graduated from Lakeview High School in 1950 and was retired from the Hamilton County Clerk’s Office after 15 years of service.

She was the daughter of the late Claude “Johnny Flynn” and Ottie Ervin and was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Linder; and a brother, James Ervin.

Survivors include her sister, Mary Jo King, Milton, Fla.; brother and sister-in-law, Johnny and Billie Ervin, Frostproof, Fla.; niece, caregiver and family, Patrice, Tim, Evan and Joseph; several other nieces, nephews and cousins.

ATHENS — Thomas Randy McLeod, 52, died Thursday afternoon, June 25, 2009, at Erlanger hospital in Chattanooga.

A native of Milan, Tenn., he was a 1974 graduate of North Side High in Jackson. He enrolled at UT-Martin and later graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in Nuclear Engineering in 1978. He earned a Masters of Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix in 1994. He was most recently the senior manager for IT Engineering at TVA in Chattanooga, where he worked for 27 years. At the time of his passing, he was working toward a PhD. in IT Management.

Survivors are his wife, Karen Gibbs McLeod; a son, Daniel McLeod, Murfreesboro; a daughter, Andrea McLeod, Knoxville; parents, Danny and Cherry Brown McLeod; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Kay McLeod; nephew, Ian McLeod; nieces, Amber and Zoey McLeod, all of Jackson, Tenn.

John Coates

ROSSVILLE — John Curtis “Curt” Coates, 32, passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2009.

He was a lifelong resident of Walker County. Mr. Coates attended Mountain View Elementary, Gordon Lee High School and Ridgeland High School. He grew up in Wesley United Methodist Church and especially loved his childhood Sunday school teacher, Mrs. Irene Jenkins. Mr. Coates was formerly employed by Rexam Inc. and he had enjoyed many years of work in the construction field. He enjoyed fishing, playing his guitar, and most of all spending time with Alyssa.

Mr. Coates was preceded in death by his brother and best friend, Jeremy Thomas Coates on May 22, 2008. Grandparents, Charles Thomas Coates Sr. and Kathryn and Leland Grant (Kate and Papa); and uncle, Dave Kendrick.

Curt is survived by his beloved daughter, Alyssa Curtlyn Coates, of Chickamauga, Ga.; parents, Charles and Susan Grant Coates; grandmother, Mrs. Louise Coates “Memaw”, of Hooker, Ga. and his loyal dog, Jack.

After a year of extreme loss, grief, and confusion, Curt is at peace in his Heavenly home with Jesus and with his brother Jeremy.

For God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes in him will have everlasting life.

CHICKAMAUGA — David Michael Hodge, 55, of Clearwater, Fla., passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Bay Pines V.A. Hospital, St. Petersburg, Fla.

He was born Dec. 4, 1953 in Covington, Ky., had lived many years in Cincinnati, Ohio, two years in Chickamauga, Ga., and over 10 years in Florida. Mr. Hodge was a disabled U.S. Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by his dad, Clarence Hodge; stepfather, Edgar Wethington; stepmother, Eileen Hodge; brothers, Jack Hodge, James Lee Hodge, Bruce Hodge Sr. and Granny Stella.

He is survived by his mother, Wanda Wethington, of Cloudland, Ga.; Spouse, Betty Hodge, of Clearwater, Fla.; children, Michelle, Little David, Layla, Devina, Little Michael and Myles; sisters, Gail (Silas) Brock,, of Lafayette, Karen (Dan) Bruns, of Harrison, Ohio, Loretta (Stan) Scott, of Fort Oglethorpe and Greta (Cliff) Meadows, of Pensacola, Fla.; sister-in-law, Jackie Hodge, of Red Bank; aunt and uncle, Ken and Jean Frady, of Fort Oglethorpe; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

FLINTSTONE — Eddie Mae “Sally” Warnack, 89, died Thursday, June 25, 2009, in a local health care facility.

She was born May 21, 1920, to the late John and Neppie Parker Massey. Mrs. Warnack was a former member of Burning Bush Baptist Church and was currently a member of Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church and the Fidelis Sunday School Class.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Warnack; brothers, Fred, Tom, Benton, Howard, Bill and Jack Massey; and sister, Betty Forrester.

Survivors are sons, Gary (Judy) Warnack, David Massey, all of Flintstone; brother, Aaron (Mary Jane) Massey, Nashville; grandsons, Jacob (Kim) Warnack, Josh (Arica) Warnack; great-granddaughters, Haley, Alexis, and Caitlyn, all of Flintstone; special nieces and nephew, Margaret Swartout, Martha and Robert Sabin, Rodney Forrester, and many others.

TRENTON — Dora Wheeler, 61, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2009.

She was born Jan. 16, 1948. She was a lifelong resident of Trenton, and a member of True Spirit Pentecostal Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mary Wheeler.

Survivors include her loving sister and brother, Evelyn Wheeler and Andy Wheeler; and special caregivers from Dade Health and Rehab and a host of friends.

SECTION — Sheila Gail Reed Lands, 53, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2009.

Funeral service at 3 p.m. CDT Sunday, June 28, 2009, from W.T. Wilson Funeral Chapel.

Burial in Old Sardis.

Family will receive friends 11 a.m.-8 p.m. CDT today at the funeral home.

David McCloud

IDER — Franklin David McCloud, 41, died Thursday, June 25, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. McCloud was a graduate of Ider High School, a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and was employed by Pathway Polymers.

Survivors include wife, Phyllis Wells McCloud; daughter and son-in-law, Stacey and Jeffrey Smith, Henagar; son, Ladon Campbell, Ider; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Amanda Campbell, Ider; sister, Margie Davis, Ider; grandchildren, Madison Smith, Lauren Baker, Makayla Baker, Colton McCown and Machara Campbell.

Funeral services will be Sunday, June 28, at 2 p.m. CDT in Corner Stone Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Paul King and the Rev. Jeremiah Griffin officiating.

Burial will follow in Fuller Cemetery.

Family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. CDT today.
