Donald Blevins

Donald L. Blevins, 85, of Ooltewah died Sunday, June 28, 2009, at his home.

He was a prominent and well known independent grocer from 1946-1966 at which time he merged Don's Food Basket with Red Food Stores. He served as President and Chairman of the Board of Red Food Stores until 1980.

Mr. Blevins had been involved in major real estate transactions throughout the Chattanooga area. He had been active in many civic and community organizations including, former Chairman of the Chattanooga area Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Electric Power Board of Chattanooga, Director of First Federal Savings and Loan Association and Director of the Better Business Bureau.

Mr. Blevins was a member of the Chattanooga Rotary Club, City Farmers Club and the Temple Masonic Lodge 30 F&AM.

He had been honored with the Executive of the Year Award in 1981. He held membership at First-Centenary United Methodist Church for many years and most recently had been a member of First Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Adkins Blevins; brothers, Foy Blevins and Doyle Blevins.

Survivors are his son, Ed Blevins, Santa Rosa, Calif.; daughter. Dianne Graham, Athens, Ga.; four grandchildren, Michelle Hoover, Melanie Graham, Jennifer Graham, Christina Graham; one great-grandchildren, Catherine Hoover; sister, Delphia Kissiah, Houston, Texas.

Services will be held Thursday at 11 am in the chapel with Ben Haden officiating.

Burial will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Ralph Harcrow

Lealon Ralph Harcrow, 81, of Hixson, passed away Monday, June 29, 2009, at a local heath care facility.

He was of the Baptist faith. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was retired from DuPont after 47 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his wife Catherine Harcrow; parents, Homer and Mildred Stetson.

He is survived by his brothers, Glen Harcrow, Harold Harcrow, Nickey (Linda) Harcrow; sisters, Betty Drecoll, Shirley (Bill) Williams, Roberta (Fred) Henderson, Kathryn Profit; special friends, Jeff, Darlene and Jacob Moore.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Elder Ricky Harcrow officiating.

Interment will follow the service at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Family will receive friends from 2-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Marie Hatfield

Marie Chancey Hatfield, 94, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2009.

She was a member of Daisy Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Sarah Chancey; daughter, Patsy Ruth; four sisters; and six brothers.

She is survived by her husband of 74 years, Julius Hatfield; sons, Wade (Bettye) Hatfield, of Soddy-Daisy, and Leland (Ann) Hatfield, of Morrison, Tenn.; granddaughter, Cyndee (Rick) Koenig, of Augusta, Ga.; grandson, Shane (Shannon) Hatfield, of Las Vegas, Nev.; great-grandsons, Trey and Briston; great-granddaughters, Autumn and Amber; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 2, in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Estle Sanders and Rev. Grant Chauncey officiating.

Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Tommy Lewis, Burt Holland, Eldon Johnson, Everette Hatfield, Johnny McGill and Clyde Skiles will serve as pallbearers.

The family would like to thank Amedisys Hospice with a very special thanks to caregivers, Deanne McBryar, Patricia Smith, Brenda Pennington and Melanie Gossett for their assistance and compassion.

Maxine Heck

Maxine B. Heck, 85, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2009.

She was of the Baptist faith.

She was born, Dec. 29, 1923 to the late Harold and Bonnie Buck in Sioux City, Iowa. She has lived in the Chattanooga area for the past 53 years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence N. Heck; and daughter, Bonnie C. Heck Payne.

She is survived by two sons, William Robert Heck, of Chattanooga and R. Richard Heck and wife, Ann, of Harrison. Survivors also include four grandchildren, Major John Heck, of Washington, D.C., Dr. Stephanie Heck Brodkin and husband, Dr. Ted Brodkin, of Philadelphia, Pa., Michael L. Payne and wife, Tami, of Cockysville, Md., and Kristin Heck Coverly and husband, Derek Coverly, of Ringgold, Ga. Seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends for visitation Wednesday, July 1, from 2-8 p.m. at North Chapel Chattanooga Funeral Home, 5401 Highway 153.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 2, at 10 a.m. in the North Chapel. Services will be conducted by Pastor Ronnie Dotson.

Interment will follow at 11 a.m. at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family would especially like to thank all the nursing staff of Alexian Brothers, Signal Mountain, for all the help and care giving they provided for the past three years. Also the staff of the PACE program on E. Third Street for all their assistance.

Leta Henry

Leta Miller Henry, 88, of Chattanooga, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, June 27, 2009.

Leta was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga area and a 1939 graduate of Ooltewah High School. She was a former employee with Davenport Hosiery Mill and Little Miss Mag Day Nursery. Leta was an active member of White Oak Baptist Church and taught Sunday School and was involved with the Mission organization.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Newell Henry; her parents, Clift and Alma Miller.

Leta is survived by her three children, Barbara (Pat) Coyle, Bob (Rosemary) Henry and Ray (Karen) Henry; grandchildren, Mark (Cindy) Coyle, Kerry Coyle, Robbie (Tara) Henry, Ashleigh Henry and Crystal (Charles) Clift; great-grandchildren, Henry and Anna Cate Coyle, Tyler, Jordan and Landon Henry, Philip and Alexander Clift; sisters, Jean (Drew) Collins and Mary Brown; niece, Jennifer Myers; and a nephew, Barry Cordell.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the North Chapel.

Services for Leta will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the North Chapel with the Rev. Ray Fowler officiating.

Betty Lusk

Betty Jo Lusk, 78, of Harrison, passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2009, at her home.

She was a longtime member of East Chattanooga Church of God and was preceded in death by her parents, Dewey and Ivey Ferguson; five brothers; and two sisters.

She is survived by her loving husband of 57 1/2 years, James N. Lusk Sr., Harrison; daughter, Theresa Thomas and her husband Roger, Harrison; son, James N. Lusk Jr. and his wife, Melody, Cohutta, Ga.; sister, Norma Jean Nix, Dora, Ala.; grandchildren, James G. Lusk and wife, Jennifer, Atlanta; Seth Thomas and wife, Jennifer, Monroe, Ga., Bryan Lusk, Atlanta; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Stovall and the Rev. Fred Smith officiating.

Interment will follow in Red Hill Cemetery, Whitwell, Tenn.

Lovell Maddox

Lovell Alderson Maddox, 99, of Chattanooga, died Friday, June 26, 2009, in an area health care facility.

Mr. Maddox was born in Nashville, on July 27, 1909 to Henry and Muzett Alderson Maddox. Mr. Maddox was a descendant of a pioneer family who served in the Revolutionary War and came to Davidson County, Tenn., in 1779. He graduated from Peabody Demonstration School and the Watkins Institute of Business.

He was employed by the McCrory Company in Baltimore and Philadelphia and was manager of the store in Lakeland, Fla. He was a veteran of WWII, serving 2 1/2 years in Europe in the U.S. Army. Mr. Maddox was a 60 year member of Post 5 of the American Legion serving on the executive committee. He was also a 60-year member of the Corinthian Lodge 414 F&AM, 32nd degree Mason, Scottish and York Rite.

After moving to Chattanooga in 2000, he joined the Elk’s Lodge 91 and the Alhambra Shrine Legion of Honor. He attended First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his sister, Jean Moss, East Ridge; two nephews, David (Sherry) Moss, Signal Mountain, Bob Moss and Betty (Tim) Scholl, Chattanooga, Judy (Winston) Hile, Murfreesboro, Ark.; three great-nephews, Doug Moss, Fort Collins, Colo., Jonathan and Joseph Moss, Signal Mountain; two great-nieces, Marcie and Holly Scholl, Chattanooga.

Services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Elder David Moss and the Rev. Joel Treick officiating.

Interment will be in National Cemetery with military honors.

Honorary pallbearers will be the “Rocking Chair” Sunday School Class at First Presbyterian and friends from Brookhaven Church in Nashville.

Virginia McDaris

Virginia Miller “Gin” McDaris, 86, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2009, in the Hospice Wing of Memorial Hospital.

She was currently a resident of the Terrace at Mountain Creek in Chattanooga. She had been battling Alzheimer’s for about three years. She was a native of Cleveland, born on April 24, 1923 to the late Fred and Gertrude Miller. She lived in Cleveland until 2007 and was a longtime member of Broad Street United Methodist Church. She worked for Bradley Cleveland Developmental Services for 30 years where she was affectionately known as “Sarge”. She was blessed with many wonderful friends there.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William F. McDaris; two sons, William F. (Chuck) McDaris II and Thomas Andrew McDaris; and brother, Fred A. Miller Jr.

Survivors include her daughter, Lynne M. Goodman and her beloved son-in-law, W.L. Goodman II, of Signal Mountain; sister, Carolyn Wood, of Johnson City; sister-in-law, Nancy Miller, of Cleveland; several nieces and nephews and a very dear longtime friend, Delores Stone.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at Broad Street United Methodist Church in Cleveland with the Rev. Debbie Stokes and the Rev. Reed Shell officiating.

Interment will follow in Hilcrest Memorial Gardens with a white dove release ceremony concluding the service.

Her family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday at the church prior to the service.

Donna Jean Porter, 60, of Hixson, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, June 28, 2009.

Donna was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and a 1967 graduate of Hixson High School. She retired from Piccadilly Cafeteria and was a member of Hixson First Baptist Church.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Opal Beasley Porter.

She is survived by her brother, Bill (Donna) Porter; six nieces and nephews, Michael (Darlene) Porter, Kim (Shawn) Cheek, Daniel (Elisa) Porter, all of Cleveland, Rachel (Scott) Simpson, Spring Hill, Tenn., Stephen Porter, Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Ashleigh Porter, Cleveland; seven great-nieces and great-nephews.

Bill Uren

William “Bill” V. Uren, 83, of Hixson passed away Monday, June 29, 2009, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease and Dementia.

Bill was retired from the Carpenters Local with 50 years of service. He was an employee at Northgate Mall for 15 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and two brothers.

He was a wonderful husband to his wife, Margie and a loving, kind stepdad to Donna, David and Cathy. He has two children, Connie and Billy, several nieces and nephews, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and his beloved cat, “Boots”. He was a friend to everyone he met and will be greatly missed.

WHITWELL — Tula Mae Tuders Powell “Mama Cotton” Case, 85, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2009.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Edward “Rooster” Powell; second husband, Charles L. Case; parents, Jake and Mary Elizabeth Ruth Tuders; daughter, Marilon Faye Kilgore; grandchildren, Eugene, Victoria; great-granddaughter, Emily; sisters, Lucille Kilgore, Pauline Thacker.

Mrs. Case was a member of Fairview, Layne’s Chapel, Caroline Chapel and Amazing Grace Churches.

Those left to cherish her memories are children, Kenneth Lloyd (Doris) Tuders, of Jasper, Eddie Darrell (Peggy) Powell, of Whitwell, Anthony Lavonne (Sue) Powell, of Victoria; 10 Case Family stepchildren; sisters, Dorothy Kilgore, of Chattanooga, Catherine Holloway, of Victoria, Peggy (Carl) Pickett, of Whitwell; brother, Franklin Eugene Tuders, of East Ridge; 14 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren.

Family will receive friends 10-9 p.m. CDT today, June 30.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. CDT Wednesday, July 1, at Fairview Church in Whitwell. Mrs. Case will lie in state one hour before the service. Rev. Raymond Bryant and family will officiate.

Interment will be at Layne’s Chapel Cemetery in Whitwell.

Grandchildren and great-grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Jack Babb

RINGGOLD — Jack Joseph Babb, 81, faithful Christian and prominent businessman of Ringgold, passed away at his home on Monday, June 29, 2009.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Walter W. Babb and Minnie Mitchell Babb; sister, Ruth Richardson; and brother, Herchel Babb.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Kathryn Babb; sons, Steven Babb and wife, Linda of Chattanooga, Philip Babb and wife, Melissa, of Atlanta; grandchildren, Jason Babb, Jeremy Babb and wife, Lisa, Ashley Babb, all of Chattanooga, Isabelle Babb and Oliver Babb, of Atlanta; great-grandchildren, Parker and Jackson Babb; sister, Judy Wood, of Carrollton, Ga.; sister-in-law, Bonnie Babb, of Ringgold; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Jack, along with his brother Herchel, founded Babb Lumber Co. in Ringgold in 1954 which presently continues as a successful family enterprise. Jack was a longstanding deacon and choir member of First Baptist Church of Ringgold. He was an active member of the Ringgold Kiwanis Club and Catoosa Habitat for Humanity. Jack was also one of the original founders of Gateway Bank in Ringgold. Jack was an avid private pilot for many years and enjoyed many trips in his plane. He also enjoyed fishing in his leisure time. Jack’s earthly life epitomized the Christian principle of service to others. He will be greatly missed by his loving family, friends, and all who knew him.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Ringgold with Dr. Kerry Bunn, Dr. Dan Whitaker and Rev. Jimmy Hatcher officiating.

Interment will be at Catoosa Memorial Gardens. His body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service.

Linda Gaddis

ROSSVILLE — Linda Ann “Ninnie” Gaddis, 60, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2009, at her residence.

She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and North Georgia area where she was a member of Calvary Church of God. She had worked for over 20 years at Faye’s Quick Lunch as a cook and retired in 2005 with 25 years of service from Life Care Center of East Ridge.

Survivors include her two sisters, Jo Stites and Fay Gaines, both of Chattanooga; stepbrother, Raymond Howard, of South Pittsburg, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Doris Haralson

TRENTON — Doris Ann Adams Haralson, 66, formerly of Whitwell, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2009.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Haralson; parents, Thomas Ed and Verna Adams; grandchildren, Latasha Graham, Sheena Marie Fields.

She was a member of Glendale Church of Christ and retired from Erlanger Hospital Pathology Department.

Those left to cherish her memories are two children, David (Christie Ann) Fields, of Lacey, Wash., Leah (Chris) Mussared, of Trenton, Ga.; five grandchildren; brother, Jerry (Judy) Adams, of Whitwell.

Family will receive friends 5-9 p.m. CDT today, June 30.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. CDT Wednesday, July 1, in the funeral home chapel with Minister Daryel Haynes officiating.

Interment will be at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

SCOTTSBORO — Ray Hendrix, 70, passed away Saturday, June 27, 2009, at Crestwood Medical Center.

Mr. Hendrix was a retired office supply sales rep and retired veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Hendrix was preceded in death by his mother, Irene “Rena” Champion Ferguson.

Billy Mahan Jr.

BRYANT — Billy Mahan Jr., 48, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2009.

He was born Oct. 15, 1960

He was a woodcraftsman for McMahan Furniture and a Christian.

He was preceded in death by his father, Billy Mahan Sr.

Survivors include his loving wife, Tillie Mahan; three daughters and husbands, Trish and Steven Howell, Trenton, Ga., Tracy and Jeremy Hawkins, Bryant, and Toni Blaylock, Trenton; two sons and wife, Joshua and Tasha Mahan, Campbellsville, Ky., and Thomas Cornett, Bryant; mother, Ruth Mahan, Bryant; seven brothers, Perry Conkle, Ike Conkle, Robert Lee Conkle, all of Trenton, Larry and Vickie Conkle, Higdon, Ala., Dewyne Mahan, Mike Mahan and Timothy Mahan; 11 grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

PRESCOTT, Ark. — John Hastings, 79, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2009, in Hillcrest Nursing Center in Prescott.

John was born March 18, 1930 to John and Littie McCullugh Hastings in Laneburg, Ark.

John was a Truck Driver and Dispatcher for Hines Trucking and he attended the Methodist Church in Emmet.

John was preceded in death by his parents; two grandsons, Joey and Gavin; three brothers, Willard, James and Sam Hastings; three sisters, Maggie Cross, Macy Gourley and Lucille Wicker.

Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Mary Hastings; two sons, Ricky Hastings and wife, Cheryl of Prescott, and Billy Hastings and wife, Crystal of Chattanooga; sister, Sue Nelson, of Bluff City, Ark.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at Pharr Funeral Home Chapel.
