VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

AMEDISYS HOSPICE

Patient Assistance: Volunteers needed for to sit with patients. Free group or individual training available . 499-0018.

AMERICAN RED CROSS

Hospital Volunteers: Time commitment of one day a week at area hospital.

Disaster Action Teams: Train to respond to disasters nationally and locally. 265-3455, ext. 125.

AVALON HOSPICE

Caregiver Assistance: Volunteers provide support and companionship to patients with terminal illnesses and their families by writing letters, reading to patients, running errands, baking, yard work or making blankets and lap quilts. Free training, time commitment of one to three hours per week. 892-3737.

CHATTANOOGA AREA FOOD BANK

Drivers: Volunteers needed to pick up food from grocery stores driving food bank vehicles. Full training provided, time commitment of one day a week for two and a half hours. Food bank hours of operation are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. 622-1800 or e-mail sgillum@chattfoodbank.org

CREATIVE DISCOVERY MUSEUM

Amuse’um: Volunteers will staff fundraiser on March 7 from 6 p.m. to midnight and on March 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for set-up and decorations. Volunteers must be 21 years or older to work the event. 648-6046 or e-mail kes@cdmfun.org

Club Discovery: Volunteers needed 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays to assist in Club Discovery, for children ages 8-12 with and without disabilities. Activities include art projects, games, sports, music, field trips. Next session is March 3-April 28 with theme “Wheels, Wings, & Whistles.” 648-6046 or kes@cdmfun.org.

CHATTANOOGA HISTORY CENTER

History Day Staff: Volunteers needed Saturday, March 7, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. for National History Day event. Placements include registration, tallying and award distribution.

History Presenter: Volunteers will assist staff with historical presentations for elementary students; day hours, some experience preferred.

Office Assistant: Assistance needed with general office duties such as mailings, filing and some data entry; flexible hours. mhayes@chattanoogahistory.com or 265-3247, ext. 12.

HOSPICE OF CHATTANOOGA

Indirect Volunteering: Opportunities include office support, staffing special events and health fairs; requires four-hour orientation.

Direct Patient/Family Volunteering: Opportunities include visiting patients at home, nursing facilities, assisted living, hospitals, grief support groups and follow-up phone calls. Requires four-hour orientation plus 16 hours training. Canine assisted therapy with TDI-certified canine also welcome. 892-4289, ext. 256 or 257.

HUMANE EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY

Pet Socialization: Volunteer spends one-on-one time with shelter animals to exercise, play and love them.

Pet Therapy: Volunteer accompanies pets to assisted-living homes for visits with residents. 624-5302, ext. 228.

MCKAMEY ANIMAL CARE & ADOPTION CENTER

Cat & Dog Caregivers: Volunteers socialize with animals, show them love and attention, and exercise puppies or older dogs in the play yards.

Fostering: Volunteers open their homes to foster a dog, cat, kittens or pups for an overnight stay or until adopted.

Transportation: Volunteers take animals to adoption centers, rescue organizations or other centers that have made requests for particular breeds.

Adoption: Volunteers assist with animal handling and presentation at local pet stores that sponsor weekend adoptions.

PARTNERSHIP FOR FAMILIES, CHILDREN AND ADULTS

Front Desk: Volunteer to answer calls, greet walk-in clients and guests. Must possess good verbal communication skills and telephone etiquette. Flexible hours. 697-3830.

Hot-line Volunteers: Volunteers ages 18 and over needed to take calls for the 24-hour Crisis Hotline, including domestic violence and sexual assault calls from victims in need of help. May work from home. 697-3830.

Social Media Outreach Volunteer: Volunteer familiar with various social networking mediums, especially blogging, needed to promote programs and events of the Partnership. Volunteer from home or campus. 697-3830.

Re:Start — The Center for Adult Education

Tutors: Volunteers needed to work one-on-one with nonreaders, training included in Laubach method; volunteers needed in adult-ed classrooms to work with students who need extra help in math and reading; individuals to assist/monitor students in the computer lab, training included.

Office Assistant/Receptionist: Individual needed to answer phones, greet visitors, assist tutors and students on Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m. 855-4443.

UNITED WAY’S VOLUNTEER CENTER

Catholic Charities- Interfaith Senior Services: Drivers are needed to transport the elderly to and from medical appointments. Drivers-clients are matched by area of town; flexible scheduling, time commitment of at least two hours per month. 265-2397.

Chattanooga Room In the Inn: Qualified teacher or education student in junior or senior year of college needed to anchor on-site after-school program. 624-6144 or japps@chattanoogaroomintheinn.com.

Erlanger: Volunteers needed to work in hospital’s Gift Shop; time commitment of four-hour shift once a week. 778-7478.

First Tee of Chattanooga: Volunteers 16 years or older needed to help with coaching life skills and golf. Not necessary to be an expert, but must know the game of golf, like working with children and be able to handle the summer heat.

Future Business Leaders of America: Volunteers needed April 2-3 to judge competitions andadminister tests at the FBLA state conference at the Chattanooga Convention Center.
