Whitfield recreation adds adult fitness

by Kevin Cummings

DALTON, Ga. — Whitfield County’s Parks and Recreation director said it’s time for adults to have some fun, too, while getting more healthy.

George Page, recreation director since November, said the department almost exclusively focuses on youth athletics, but that will change when the organization adds adult fitness programs soon.

Mr. Page said parks and rec is seeking instructors for yoga, pilates and aerobics. If these efforts are a success, the department later could add kickboxing and Zumba, a trendy Latino dance aerobics program.

“We are testing the waters with fee-based programs that will pay for themselves,” Mr. Page said. “We are trying to be more diverse with what we offer.”

Whitfield County spokeswoman Brooke Bennett said fitness programs like yoga and pilates are popular.

“The recreation department is not just softball and baseball, it’s much more than that,” she said. “How will we know if new programs are a hit unless we try it?”

Mr. Page said eventually he wants to offer more recreation opportunities to children who don’t necessarily like typical team sports, and he also wants to add activities for senior citizens and children with disabilities.

“We’re wide open to new ideas,” he said. “If something works, then great. If it doesn’t, then we know not to do it.”
