Chattanooga Police officer James Daves was treated at Erlanger hospital this morning for a knife wound sustained during an altercation with a violent suspect at 908 Bell Vista in Brainerd.
The incident which occurred at around 12:30 a.m. was dispatched as a disorder but escalated into a physical altercation in which the suspect was Tasered and the officer was cut, according to Assistant Chief Mike Williams.
As back up officers arrived a pit bull dog exited the residence and attacked the officer and it was subsequently shot and killed. Officer Daves was treated and released.
This is shameful that the police shot and killed the dog, they could have used non lethal methods, such as pepper spray, baton or taser. I hope that the internal affairs branch of the Chattanooga police investigates and writes a letter of reprimand and place it in the officer's personnel file. The only reason this dog attacked the officer, was because of the owner being in an altercation with the officer, whose first response is to shoot, makes you wonder if perhaps the officer is gun happy, and was just waiting for the chance to shoot something, anything.
What is shameful, is that the police had to even deal with this situation. The dog could have been used as a distraction and both officers could have been killed. Our officers put their lives on the line every day with the growing gang situation and the crime rates getting out of control. If an officer is being attacked by man or animal, I say shoot! People may think twice before act.
I agree with you hmdesign4u. If a pit bull (this is not a little chihuahua that will snap your ankles) came at me vicious and trying to attack I'd shoot it too. Those animals are trained to be fighting dogs and kill. Thank God this officer acted so quickly, he could have been seriously injured if not killed.
