SEC basketball blog: Black Wednesday for SEC

That sound you heard tonight was the bubbles bursting for two SEC schools.

Florida, considered one of the last at-large teams in the NCAA tournament entering Wednesday’s play, lost 81-70 at Mississippi State and fell to 8-7 in the SEC. The Gators’ spot in the NCAA is now in jeopardy.

But the shocker occurred in Lexington, where Georgia beat Kentucky 90-85 behind 30 points from Terrance Woodbury. The Bulldogs were coming off a 22-point loss to an Arkansas team with one SEC win all season. Barring an SEC tournament championship, Kentucky is probably out of the NCAA talk. The Wildcats entered the night with an RPI of 67 and just lost to a team with an RPI of 206. Look for Kentucky in the NIT.

Earlier in the day, ESPN’s Joe Lunardi said the loser of this weekend’s Florida-Kentucky game would probably need a deep run in the SEC tournament to earn a bid. But with both teams losing tonight, Kentucky is probably out and Florida absolutely can’t afford to lose.

LSU, probably the SEC’s only hope at representing in the Sweet 16, lost at home to Vanderbilt tonight and will likely drop to a 7 seed in this week’s projections.

We could be looking at just two SEC teams — LSU and Tennessee — in the NCAAs depending on South Carolina’s finish to the season.
