Chattanooga: East Brainerd apartments get approval

by Jason Reynolds

Local planners this afternoon approved changes to a 316-unit apartment complex on East Brainerd Road.

The complex would be built at the corner of East Brainerd Road at Panorama Drive by Flournoy Development Co. The Chattanooga-Hamilton County Regional Planning Commission approved a new site plan for the Amberleigh Ridge complex, replacing a site plan that had been approved in October.

Residents living around the proposed development split over their reaction to the development. Lana Sutton, a local resident, said that the apartments would destroy neighborhood property values and was not compatible with the surrounding single-family homes. She also said that the project had been pushed through without neighborhood input last fall when the planning commission approved the original apartment zoning plan.

Former Hamilton County Sheriff John Cupp, who lives nearby, said that he did not like the development plans but believed that the apartments would be better than other development options.

The Chattanooga City Council will consider the case next month.
