Decherd Board of Aldermen drops top cop

by Mike O'Neal

DECHERD, Tenn. — Terry Freeze is no longer police chief for this Franklin County town.

The Decherd Board of Mayor and Aldermen on Monday night voted to fire Mr. Freeze and appointed Ross Peterson to become the city’s top cop, according to a story by Deidre Ortiz published in the Winchester Herald-Chronicle.

Altogether, aldermen fired three Decherd police staffers.

Ms. Ortiz quoted Alderman Scott Moore as saying, “With the betterment of the city of Decherd (in mind), I think we should relieve Terry Freeze as chief of police, along with (officer) Eddie Colvin, tonight.”

Sgt. Joseph Madden also was fired.

“They really didn’t give me a reason,” former Chief Freeze told the Times Free Press Tuesday. “I thought everything was running well, and all of the sudden, then bam.”

Sgt. Madden was recently suspended for three days after a crash involving his patrol car.

Chief Peterson told the board it would be impossible to operate with only nine full-time officers and asked permission to hire replacements.

The board agreed to hire one certified officer.
