KNOXVILLE — Pat Summitt’s youngest Tennessee Lady Volunteers team earned the program’s lowest NCAA tournament seeding in history with the No. 5 spot in the Berkley, Calif., regional.
The defending national champions will face Ball State in Bowling Green, Ky., on Sunday.
“I’m really not surprised,” coach Pat Summitt said during the ESPN broadcast. “I thought we were probably a five seed.”
Tennessee (22-10), which is the only team to play in every NCAA tournament, has only been seeded as low as fourth once.
At risk is Tennessee’s unblemished streak of reaching the regional semifinals in every NCAA tournament.
The Lady Vols took 10 losses into the tournament in 1997, grabbing a No. 3 seed and winning the title. They’ve earned a top seed 19 times, a No. 2 seed four times and No. 3 seed three times.
