WASHINGTON — Rep. Zach Wamp, R-Tenn., today voted in favor of a bill that would tax 90 percent of bonuses issued by companies that receive more than $5 billion in government aid.
The bill, which passed 328-93, is aimed primarily at AIG, which announced this week that it has paid out $165 million in bonuses, drawing intense criticism from lawmakers.
Rep. Nathan Deal, R-Ga., voted against the bill. Many Republicans opposed it, saying it draws attention from lax Democratic oversight of the bailout funds.
Rep. Lincoln Davis, D-Tenn., missed the vote to attend a memorial service of a staffer’s father in Nashville, but his office said had he been present, he would have voted in favor of the bill.
