Crime on Tennessee college campuses dropped for the fourth consecutive year, according to an annual report released today by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
The 6.4 percent decrease in the number of offenses reported from 2007 to 2008 can be attributed to enhanced security measures that university officials say are being taken, according to the report.
Many officials said they installed card readers on building access points, assigned officers at fixed posts, held regular security meetings and implemented emergency alert systems, according to a news release from the TBI.
The largest category of crimes committed on campus remains theft.
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga had 37 thefts reported in 2008, including 24 from motor vehicles, according to the report.
Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn., had 59 thefts, including 30 from buildings, the report says, while Southern Adventist University in Collegedale reported 31 thefts and Chattanooga State Technical Community College had 36.
Cleveland State Community College reported less than 20 total offenses for 2008, according to the report.
