Today is Brenda McKaig’s last day as a member of the Dade County Board of Assessors.
“You can’t take the politics out of politics,” Mrs. McKaig said Tuesday of a Superior Court Judge Brian House’s ruling that she should no longer serve on the board.
County Executive Ted Rumley called a special county commission meeting tonight to name a replacement.
“It will be a quick meeting,” Mr. Rumley said. “We will follow the judge’s ruling, remove Mrs. McKaig from the board and appoint someone to fill place.”
Commissioners learned in February that Mrs. McKaig had not completed 40 hours of state-mandated training within 180 days of her appointment.
Judge House found no fault with how Mrs. McKaig performed her duties, but ruled that not complying with state statues was cause for removal, according to Mr. Rumley.
“The law changed in 2006,” Mrs. McKaig said. “I really thought I had a year to go with completion of the mandated training.”
Mrs. McKaig served on the board from 1999 until she resigned in 2007. She was reappointed in July after another member failed to complete the training.
“Three board members within the past year have been unable to complete their training as specified,” Mrs. McKaig said.
She said she will accept the commission’s decision.
“I have appreciated the opportunity to serve the citizens of Dade County and will continue to find ways to further that service,” she said.
