Alabama has sports on hold

The governing bodies of high school athletics in two states have postponed all sporting events amid concerns of swine flu.

Alabama High School Athletic Association executive director Steve Savarese said he made that decision late Wednesday night after consulting with the group’s medical advisory committee. Savarese told The Associated Press he hoped to resume athletic events by Tuesday.

Earlier this week, Texas postponed high school athletic events until May 11.

“I got an e-mail last night from the state association that said everything would be canceled until further notice,” North Jackson (Ala.) High principal Sam Houston said. “We were leaving for Gulf Shores this morning for the state track meet, and our softball team was supposed to play today at Guntersville in the area tournament. The baseball team and golf were done. Hopefully by the first of the week everything will be rescheduled for the track and softball.

“Nobody is in school in Huntsville today, so since it wasn’t a good idea for them to be in school, the state should be smart enough not to have people traveling around for sports events.”

Alabama’s state track and field championships were set for today and Saturday at Gulf Shores and Troy.

The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association has no current plans to alter schedules.

“We haven’t had a discussion on what it would take for us to postpone anything, but we did talk with Texas and Alabama folks,” TSSAA assistant director Matthew Gillespie said. “It’s something we will monitor. It’s not to the point where we would cancel anything. Right now it would be a school decision, because we’re still in the regular season. We would respond to the schools and help in any way if they have questions.”

The Georgia High School Association also said it was keeping close watch on the situation but had not postponed any scheduled events.
