Chattanooga: Man charged in kidnap attempt

A 6-year-old girl is safe despite an attempt to abduct her from the East Brainerd Ace Hardware, according to Chattanooga Police Department spokeswoman Sgt. Jerri Weary.

The incident occurred at 3:30 p.m. Monday when the youngster’s grandfather noticed the little girl’s brother running across an adjacent parking lot after her, Sgt. Weary said.

The grandfather then saw a man running with the little girl toward an SUV parked on the adjacent lot, Sgt. Weary said. The grandfather confronted the suspect, forcing him to release the little girl, Sgt. Weary said.

Afterward, the two men struggled, but the suspect got away, Sgt. Weary said. The suspect ran down East Brainerd Road but was apprehended behind a business, Sgt. Weary said.

The little girl and her brother were not harmed, Sgt. Weary said.

The suspect, identified as Jeremy Mizell, is charged with especially aggravated kidnapping, Sgt. Weary said. Mr. Mizell was questioned and transported to Hamilton County Jail, Sgt. Weary said.
