CSTCC’s Hewlett receives leadership honor

Dr. Fannie Hewlett, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Chattanooga State Technical Community College, received the International Exemplary Leader Award during Chair Academy’s 18th International Conference for Postsecondary Leaders in Nashville.

Dr. Hewlett has been associated with Chattanooga State for more than 30 years. She has been provost and vice president since 2001.

Fox named a CSCC trustees

Veronica Fox of Athens, Tenn., has been named to the Board of Trustees for the Cleveland State Foundation.

Ms. Fox has 27 years of experience in the trust and financial services industry. She was a founding member of the Certified Employee Benefits Specialist Advisory Council at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and is past president of the Knoxville Chapter of the International Society of Certified Employee Benefits Specialists.

She is currently employed with Citizens National Bank of Athens as vice president and trust officer. She is a member of the Cleveland Civitan Club, is treasurer of the Appalachian District of Civitan International, committee member of the Athens Chamber of Commerce Leadership Tomorrow and the Bradley/Cleveland Chamber’s Youth Leadership programs.

She and her husband, Rick, have two children and four grandchildren.

Siskin earns

three-star honor

Siskin Children’s Institute’s new preschool and child care center in East Brainerd has been awarded the highest rating possible from the Tennessee Department of Human Services.

Siskin Early Learning Center-East Brainerd earned three stars from the Tennessee Report Card and Star Quality Program. The center received an overall assessment score of 6.57 out of a possible seven points.

Huber wins

Lee crown

Lee University sophomore Rachael Huber was crowned winner of the 46th annual Parade of Favorites recently. She represented Omega Alpha Phi and was escorted by Maurice “Mo” Huggins. She is the daughter of Michael and Becky Huber of Hamilton, Ohio.

Lacey Stokes was first runner-up and also won the Kay McDaniel Woman of Achievement Award and the Community Service Award. Lacey Noles won second runner-up. Elle Greely was third runner-up and also won the Outstanding Talent Award and Interview Award. Lauren Clayton was fourth runner-up.

Lewis wins

Syracuse position

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga alumnus Justin Lewis has been selected for a four-year teaching assistantship and tuition waver for graduate study in Syracuse University’s Composition and Cultural Rhetoric Ph.D. program.

Mr. Lewis was one of four students selected from approximately 170 applicants.

“I am interested in the networked environments of the Web in the context of social media,” he said. “On a more general level, I’m interested in how the Internet allows humans to create connections in visual, virtual spaces and the corresponding effect of virtual connections on the real communication and transmission of ideas,” he said.

UTC Engineering

awarded $7,500

The UTC Department of Civil Engineering was awarded $7,500 by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying for connecting professional practice and education.

NCEES engineering awards recognize programs that demonstrate meaningful partnerships between professional engineers and students. All Engineering Accreditation Commission/ Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology accredited engineering programs were invited to enter such projects.

UTC was recognized for “Intermodal Transit Center.” The submission was prepared and entered by Ipshita Thomas. Team members were Sean Blocher, Josh Bobo, Bryce Evans, Michael Gilliam, Eric Hagerman, Ben O’Neill, Ipshita Thomas and Jonathan Wooten.

Thomas wins

scholarship

Ipshita Thomas, an engineering student at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, has received a $1,000 scholarship from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Tennessee.

Ms. Thomas, 20, was one of three students to receive the inaugural U.S. Department of Transportation’s Regional Outstanding Student Fellowship Award earlier this year, a new award worth $12,000 annually.

She is a 2005 graduate of Hamilton County Middle College High School and Chattanooga State Technical Community College. In addition to her course work at UTC, Ms. Thomas is an environmental compliance and dam safety intern with TVA.

She was student president of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2008, is a member of Tau Beta Pi and the Society of Women Engineers.

Signal band earns

excellent rating

The Signal Mountain High School Band, under the direction of Robert Groves, recently received an “Excellent” rating during its performance at East Tennessee School Band & Orchestra Association’s Lower Area Concert Festival held at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.

The Eagle band was one of 35 bands and orchestras judged by senior music educators from across the country during a performance of three songs.

Students attend

Model UN

A delegation from the Southeastern High School Model United Nations program attended the 35th annual National High School Model United Nations Conference in New York City. The local team, representing Spain, beat more than 100 teams to win one of three Awards of Excellence.

“The award was a huge shock,” says GPS junior Taylor Dickinson, who will serve as SHSMUN’s secretary general next year. “We competed against 3,000 other delegates and much larger teams.”

Miss Dickinson and GPS sophomore Shyama Appareddy were chosen to speak at the general assembly and on behalf of the UNICEF and the Commission on the Status of Women committees.
