UTC’s Huesman leading Football 101 benefit

New Mocs head football coach Russ Huesman and his coaching staff will lead Football 101 on Saturday, May 30, at the Chattanooga Convention Center.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the seminar starts at 9:30. The event concludes with a tailgate party and behind-thescenes tour of Finley Stadium at 4:30 p.m.

This one-day seminar will teach football fundamentals to rookie and veteran fans with the goal of enhancing fans’ viewing enjoyment. The event is a fundraiser for Contact of Chattanooga Crisis Helpline.

Game-day attire and comfortable shoes are encouraged. Weather permitting, interactive drills will be offered on the football field.

Sandee Jenkins, event chairwoman, said similar fundraisers have been held in other cities to sell-out crowds. Although the football class is open to everyone, Contact officials expect it to be attended primarily by women.

Free parking will be provided at Finley Stadium. Participants may either make the 10-minute walk to the convention center or take a shuttle.

Registration is $75, which includes lunch, laminated sport map, T-shirt, shopping, door prizes, tailgate party, free parking at Finley Stadium and Football 101 gift bag.

Orchid-growing class Monday

The Tennessee Valley Orchid Society will sponsor “Orchids 101,” a free talk and repotting demonstration, on Monday at 7 p.m. at the Tennessee Valley Children’s Home, 6623 Lee Highway.

Beginners are encouraged to attend, and to bring their questions as well as any orchids with which they need help.

The class will be led by Geraldine Powell and Beth Cox, coowners of The Orchid Gallery.

55-Plus Club to hear Roberts

Dalton Roberts will be the guest speaker at Sunday’s meeting of the 55-Plus Club.

Mr. Roberts is a musician, humorist, former politician and a columnist for the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

A vegetarian pot-luck lunch will begin at noon in the Collegedale Seventh-day Adventist Church fellowship hall.

Anyone age 55 and older is welcome to attend. Annual dues are $6.

Comcast hosting town hall meeting

Comcast will host a town hall meeting on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Eastgate Senior Activity Center, 5600 Brainerd Road.

Public Affairs Manager Laurie Shipley will be on hand to answer questions regarding Comcast’s World of More digital conversion, the FCC DTV switch, and questions concerning other Comcast products and services. A short tutorial on the Comcast remote will also be held during this time.

Crafters sought for White Oak Fair

The Cannon Association of Craft Artists is taking artist applications for the White Oak Crafts Fair, which will be held Sept. 12-13.

This juried event takes place along the banks of the East Fork Stones River adjacent to the Arts Center of Cannon County, near Woodbury, Tenn., on Highway 70-S.

Horse show today in Cleveland

The National Racking Horse Association, Choo Choo Chapter, horse show begins at 2 p.m. today at the Tri-State Exhibition Center in Cleveland, Tenn. This event will benefit the Tri-State Therapeutic Riding Center. Admission is $5.

The Tri-State Therapeutic Riding Center is a nonprofit organization that provides therapeutic horseback riding activities for physically, mentally or emotionally challenged people.

Battlefield bicycle tour today

Outdoor Chattanooga and Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park are hosting a Chickamauga Battlefield bicycle tour today at 9:30 a.m., beginning at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitors Center.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Park and the Chattanooga Bicycle Club, the 6- to 8-mile ride will include park history from interpretive rangers.

Participants should bring their own bicycles. Helmets are required for all riders ages 16 and under.

History Center tour is Tuesday

The Chattanooga History Center will present its fifth walking tour, The Stanton Addition, based on a section of Maury Nicely’s “Chattanooga Walking Tour and Historic Guide,” on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Dr. Daryl Black will serve as tour guide.

Toddler Olympics set for Thursday

The MOMS Club of Chattanooga will host the fourth annual Toddler Olympics on Thursday at Shepherd Recreation Center, 2124 Shepherd Road.

The free event will feature running and throwing events for kids ages 6 and under, prizes and special activities. Sign-in begins at 10:45 a.m., with opening ceremonies at 11:15 a.m.

St. Jude Hunter Pace benefit May 23

Hidden Hills Farm will host a Hunter Pace event on Saturday, May 23, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Teams of two to four competitors will ride a 5- to 8-mile course through woods, across mountains, and a couple of optional jumps. The course will be designed to simulate conditions encountered during a fox hunt.

Participants are encouraged to collect donations for taking part in the ride. Those who do are eligible for prizes for amounts raised.

Registration is $25 per rider. The event is not open to spectators.

Stringer’s Ridge benefit Friday

Savor Stringer’s Ridge, a benefit for the Save Stringer’s Ridge campaign of the Trust for Public Land, will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the penthouse of The BridgeView on the North Shore.

Tickets are $25, which includes wine and cheese from Greenlife and music by The Hamilton Boys with Christie Burns. Work by local artists will be for sale.

Abbington choral workshop Friday

Dr. James Abbington will lead a two-day African American music workshop beginning Friday at First Baptist Church, 506 East Eighth St.

In addition to choral sessions, the workshop will feature a master class for organists. At the conclusion of the workshop, choral participants will present a concert Saturday evening.

Dr. Abbington is the executive editor of the African American Church Music Series, published by GIA Publications Inc. of Chicago, and has served as director of the annual Hampton University Ministers and Musicians Conference since 2000.

Pitch, Hit, Run contest Sunday

The Pitch, Hit, Run baseball skills competition for children ages 7 through 14 will be held Sunday at Engel Stadium. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. and the competition will start at 2 p.m. There is no charge to enter.

Boys and girls compete together. Trophies will be awarded for top male and female participants in each age group. Winners will advance to the Sectional Competition on Sunday, May 24.

Zhou leading calligraphy class

Tongke Zhou, a professor of Nanjing University in China, will lead a demonstration on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Decosimo Rogers Studio, 1427 Williams St. He will perform large-scale calligraphy to music.

Professor Zhou has more than 40 years experience practicing and teaching Chinese calligraphy. His calligraphic works have been given to dignitaries and are placed in museums. He is currently a visiting professor at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

UTC Chorale seeking singers

The UTC Master Chorale is seeking singers for its summer season, which meets weekly until its season-closing concert on June 19.

Rehearsals are held in Cadek Hall, room 310, on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Persons interested in joining the group are asked to schedule a minimal audition, which includes singing “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” and a check of the singer’s vocal range.

The Master Chorale is a mixed chorus that performs an advanced level of choral music. Community members are encouraged to join with no charge.

Greenbriar Cove open house Sunday

Greenbriar Cove, a Collegedale retirement community, is holding an open house Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Greenbriar Cove is located at 4607 Ooltewah-Ringgold Road.

The open house will include music by Jericho Brass, an antique car show, refreshments, and appearances by Sunny 92.3’s Luther Masingill and Gene Lovin, and J103’s The Lone Ranger. Book drive at rec centers

Chattanooga Department of Education, Arts & Culture is holding a city-wide book drive this month to collect “What’s Going On?” books as well as books on the Hamilton County Department of Education’s summer reading lists.

The books will be placed in all city recreation centers and Chattanooga Housing Authority community centers.

Books may be dropped off at a local recreation center.

Bracelet workshop offered at museum

The Museum Center at Five Points in Cleveland, Tenn., will hold a braided beaded bracelet workshop on May 30 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The class is open to ages 16 and older.

Dale Armstrong will show students how to use colorful gemstone beads to create a “bubble gum bracelet.” The pattern and formula that will be learned can be used later to make earrings, collars and anklets.

The cost is $50 for museum members and $55 for nonmembers with an additional $25 material fee.
