The skeletal remains found below Rock City are those of an Ohio man who planned to jump from a cliff on Lookout Mountain, according to Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson.
On April 22, authorities found the body of a Columbus, Ohio, man who has been identified as Allan Wilhelm Hansen.
Maria Teresa A. Tersigni-Tarrant, a forensic anthropologist, identified the remains as those of the 29-year-old Mr. Hansen by utilizing dental and medical records. The manner of death is consistent with a fall from a height, Dr. Tersigni-Tarrant said.
Mr. Hansen was reported missing on Sept. 6, 2008, to the Columbus Police Department. During the investigation, officials discovered that Mr. Hansen was suicidal and intended to jump from a large cliff on Lookout Mountain, Sheriff Wilson states.
At the time, law enforcement agencies in the area of Lookout Mountain were alerted to Mr. Hansen’s intentions, but no contact was made with him, according to the sheriff.
Mr. Hansen’s family has donated his remains to the University of Tennessee Forensic Anthropology Center in Knoxville.
A memorial service is planned later.
