Lady Mountain Lions exit early in softballey

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — St. Andrew’s-Sewanee’s stay in its first high school softball state tournament ended up a short one.

The Lady Mountain Lions played 11 innings — all in one day — and were bounced from the Division II-A competition with a 10-0 loss to Southern Baptist Educational Center and a 19-3 loss to First Assembly Christian School at Starplex No. 3 on Wednesday.

St. Andrew’s-Sewanee finishes 9-10 in the program’s second year of existence.

“We just didn’t have a good day,” SAS coach Dan Barry said. “Our game was just off today. If you go look at the stats from last week, in the sub-state and the region, it was a whole different ballgame. I think it was the total experience of coming to the big show.”

Elizabeth Winton had the Lady Mountain Lions’ first hit at a state tournament when she grounded a single through the right side leading off the bottom of the first inning against FACS (26-10). Kate Wiley added a single an out later.

Winton also will go down as having the program’s first RBIs in a state tournament, thanks to her two-run triple in their final inning of the day. She later scored on Rachel Pope’s single.

Morgan Mosby’s perfect game for SBEC (24-1) was the first no-hitter thrown against the Lady Mountain Lions all season. They return everyone next season except Pope, Mercedes Burleyson and Ann McDonald.

“This is something to build on,” Barry said. “It was good experience being here.”
