The University of Georgia men’s golf team sat dead in the water twice the last two days, according to senior Adam Mitchell from Chattanooga.

The Bulldogs stalled for good early Friday evening and were ousted from the NCAA championship tournament at Toledo, Ohio.

When they left the Inverness Club on Thursday, they were in ninth place and one spot out of the match-play championship bracket. But they slipped in as the No. 8 seed.

Then in the Friday morning match, Oklahoma State led three of the five matches, but Georgia senior Brian Harman birdied his last three holes to beat Rickie Fowler 1 up on No. 18.

“This morning was the most exciting and nervous all of us had been on the course,” said Mitchell, a former McCallie School golfer who had another of the team’s wins. “But we had people making shots. It was an unbelievable display of golf, and we pulled it out against our rival.”

The Bulldogs broke for lunch before facing Arkansas, which ousted Washington 3 and 2 in the morning.

The Razorbacks then defeated UGA 3-1-1 and advanced to the final match against Texas A&M, which beat Michigan 3-1-1.

“I feel like we got outplayed this afternoon,” said Georgia’s Harris English, a Baylor School graduate. “Arkansas is a great team, and they played well and they deserved to win. The real matchup we had was Oklahoma State this morning, and we put it to them with Harman coming through in the clutch. We were on such a high for an hour.”

But now the Dogs are done.

Either the Aggies or the Razorbacks will be national champs.
