Soddy-Daisy and Riverdale have now played twice this season in girls' soccer. Soddy-Daisy won the season opener. Riverdale's Lady Warriors won the Lady Trojans' season-ender.
The Lady Warriors won 1-0 in a Class AAA high school state sectional Saturday night at Soddy-Daisy.
Riverdale (11-9-1) advances to the state tournament this week in Chattanooga. Soddy-Daisy ended its season 15-4-2.
Riverdale coach Jim McDowell said his young team has developed greatly since hosting the Lady Trojans and losing 2-0.
"We have a lot of young players and we were trying to replace some seniors from last year," McDowell said. "We had some big shoes to fill, and it really took us a while to figure out who needed to play where. We took some lumps early. Soddy-Daisy is a tough team to open up with."
Sarah Parker scored the goal Saturday with 33:46 remaining off Hannah McGowen's corner kick. Riverdale had two corner kicks within the first eight minutes of the match and ended up with a 5-3 edge in that category.
"Both teams have very good defenses," McDowell said. "We knew the game might come down to a corner kick, a free kick or something along those lines. That's why we worked on corners before we came down here."
Soddy-Daisy coach Moises Drumond said his team got off to a slow start and that enabled the Lady Warriors to gain momentum. Summer Lanter had a chance to score on a breakaway after a long run, but keeper Abbey Adkins took on her hard shot and deflected it away. Most of the Lady Trojans' best scoring chances after that one came in the second half.
"Obviously that was a chance there, and we had some headers we couldn't forward in," Drumond said. "We had some crosses sitting in there and just couldn't find a way to touch it in the goal."
Aside from the final score, the overall statistics ended up even. Riverdale had a 15-14 edge on shots, and each team had six saves.
"The first time we played them, our shots went in and theirs didn't. This time theirs went in and ours didn't," Drumond said.
Among the Lady Trojans whose prep careers came to an end were starting midfielders Elizabeth Geier and Hannah Jenkins and defenders Brooke Hensley and Desirae Smith.
"These seniors have brought so much to our soccer program," Drumond said. "I hate it for them. It's because of them we've been able to take our program to a higher level."
