Ted Agee
Ted Wayne Agee, 71, of Hixson, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, in a local hospital surrounded by his loving family and friends.
A native of Pikeville, Tenn., he had worked for Combustion Engineering and owned Agee Septic and Plumbing Service for over 35 years. From 1958 to 1962 he served with the U.S. Air Force, spending three years in France and England. Ted was a member of the Masonic Lodge 427, the Scottish Rite, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sheila Agee; son, Todd Agee; parents, Clarence and Mabel Agee; brother, Wallace Agee and nephew Richard Agee.
Survivors include his precious love, Jerrie; daughter, Tara Agee Goddard; son, Alex Agee; stepdaughters, Vicki (Mike) Middleton, of Hixson; Valerie (Bob) Eberhart, of Evansville, Ind., Chris (Jamie) Taylor, of Beaver Dam, Ky., and Jami Boling, of Hartford, Ky.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marie Agee, of Hixson, and Carol (Claude) Wood, of Pikeville; two brothers, Perry (Jeannine) Agee, of Dayton, Ohio, and Pat (Francis) Agee, of Pikeville; one sister-in-law, Jamie Agee, of Chattanooga; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. CST today at Faith Baptist Church with Pastor Doyle Ashburn officiating.
Burial will be in Parham Cemetery.

David Josephine “Granny Jo” Baggett, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009.
Funeral was Tuesday, Oct. 27, at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel in Alabama.
A memorial service will be 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, at Covenant Church, 9259 Hixson Pike, Soddy-Daisy.

Joel Barrett
Joel William Barrett, 72, of East Ridge, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009.
He was born in Texas and moved to the Chattanooga area in 1976. He was a member of Lantana Road Baptist Church, Crossville, Tenn. He retired from Lowe’s in 1997 after working there for more than 10 years.
His parents; sons, Terry Clary and Rocky Barrett; one sister; and one brother preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife Bobbie Barrett; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Paul Frost of Rossville; brothers Dewayne Barrett and Wilford Barrett; grandchildren, Amanda Gordon and Dustin Frost.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, in the funeral home chapel.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. Monday until the service time.

Mona Black
Mona Sue Black, 75, of Lookout Valley, went home to be with her Lord on Friday, Oct. 30, 2009.
She was surrounded by her daughter and caregiver, Susan, and loving friends, Sherry and James Gamble, at her residence.
Mona had lived most of her life in the Chattanooga area, where she was a Christian and a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church in Cleveland, Tenn. She last attended the Grace Baptist Tabernacle in Lookout Valley and was ministered to in her home by the Lookout Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lillian Gertrude and Frank Reuben Kean; three brothers, Franklin Eugene “Gene” Kean, James Floyd “Snookey” Kean and Bobby Lee Kean Sr.; and one sister, Betty Buckles.
Survivors include her husband, Rhea Black, of Cleveland; daughter, Susan Black of Chattanooga; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Dorothy K. Bradford, 82, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, in a local health care facility.
Mrs. Bradford was a member of Silverdale Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her parents, John and Nona Klinedinst; and husband, Oliver Bradford.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Weller, Chattanooga; son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Betty Bradford, Chickamauga, Ga.; two grandchildren, Opal Lusk, Knoxville, Jason Cooley and wife Chasity, Chattanooga; eight great-grandchildren, Aiden and Kaitlyn Lusk, C.J., Leila, Kaden, Julian, Sage and Lyric Cooley; and several nieces and nephews.

Shirley Brewer
Shirley B. Brewer, 87, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at her home with her family by her side.
She was preceded in death by her parents, E.C. and Gladys Brown; brother-in-law, Ned Mitchell Sr.; nephew, Ned Mitchell Jr.; and husband, Jean Humphreys in 1999.
She was born on Oct. 10, 1922, in Mayland, Tenn., to E.C. and Gladys Brown. Shirley graduated from Crossville High School, where she played basketball and was semi-pro. She also loved to bowl. She retired from Union Carbide in Oak Ridge in 1982 and worked as a supply manager for 39 years. She lived in Bonita Springs, Fla., during the winter and in Chattanooga during the summer. She enjoyed life, parties, trips, always on the go, happy hour friends and Red Hat luncheons.
She is survived by her husband of three years, Raymond D. Brewer, Chattanooga; brother, Robert Brown and wife, Shirley, Chattanooga; their children, Holly and Dewey Williams, Oklahoma, and Philip and Pat Vaughan, Chattanooga; sister, Mary Ann Mitchell, Marietta, Ga.; nephew, Jeff Mitchell and wife, Laura, Marietta, and their children, Matt, Corey and Laney; stepchildren, William T. Humphreys, Oak Ridge, Tenn., Judy Lanigan, Maynard, Mass., David Brewer and wife, Shiela, Massachusetts, Roy Brewer and wife, Diane, Massachusetts, Betty Anne Brown and husband, Fred, Massachusetts, Jeff Brewer and wife, Karen, Massachusetts, Joanne Sheahan, Massachusetts; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Ralph Carr
Ralph Lynn Carr, 85, of Chattanooga, formerly of Oakdale, Tenn., passed away suddenly Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at Spring City Care & Rehabilitation Center.
Ralph retired after 41 years of distinguished service as a locomotive engineer with Norfolk Southern Railroad. He was a 65-year member of United Transportation Union and a member of the Emerald Lodge 377 F&AM in Wartburg, Tenn., and was honored for 63 years of Masonic membership.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. J.H. and Mona Goldston Carr; and his first wife, Mavis Lee Carr.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Jacqueline L. Carr; sons, James Lynn Carr and his wife Paula, Ralph Lee Carr and Guy J. Hull and his wife, Brigitte; daughters, Susan Davenport and her husband Johnny and Michelle Keylon; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends today Nov. 1, 2009 from 4-8 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home in Harriman, Tenn.

Katherine Chastain
Katherine Stewart Chastain “Kay”, 89, a longtime resident of Signal Mountain, died on Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, in Madison, Wis., after a brief illness.
Born in Superior, Wis., she was the daughter of the late Esther Cronk and William Wallace Stewart. She was a resident of the Chattanooga area since 1949. The widow of Gerald Woodyard “Jerry” Chastain, she also was preceded in death by her sister Mary Stewart Brink, of Minneapolis; her brother, William W. Stewart Jr., of Spooner, Wis.; and her brother, Charles Stewart, of Jefferson, Wis.
She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Douglas (Skippy) Rainwater, of Powell, Tenn.; her son, Gerald W. “Woody” Chastain Jr. (Ann), of Madison, Wis. She also is survived by three grandchildren, Barney Harold Chastain, of Madison, Wis., Richard Wade (Nyssa) Rogers V, of Ashland City, Tenn.; Sarah Katherine Rogers (Brian) Roy; and two great-grandchildren, Chloe and Colton Roy, all of Denham Springs, La.; and her nieces and nephews.
A graduate of Northland College in Ashland, Wis., she worked at DuPont’s Barksdale Works facility near Washburn, Wis., where she met her future husband. After marrying in 1941, they lived in Joliet, Ill.; Richland, Wash.; Shreveport, La.; and Jackson, Miss., before moving to Chattanooga.
Kay was an executive secretary for Dixie Mercerizing Co. in Lupton City, Cumberland Case Corp. and the Tennessee Valley Authority. After retirement she much enjoyed playing the piano for residents’ sing-alongs at Alexian Brothers retirement home and she volunteered with the Salvation Army, teaching English to adult immigrants. An avid reader, she was a natural at her volunteer work for the Signal Mountain Public Library for many years.
The Chastains were active Episcopalians in the Chattanooga area and founding members of St. Peter’s Church, having also been members at St. Paul’s for several years. They joined St. Timothy’s after moving to Signal Mountain in 1961. Kay sang in the choirs at all three churches, and she was librarian at St. Timothy’s for several years. She moved to Wisconsin in 1997.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Katherine Stewart Chastain will be held at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church’s chapel on Mississippi Avenue, Signal Mountain, on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 2 p.m., followed by a reception in the Parish Hall.
Lottie Cox
Lottie Looney Cox, 97, of Ocala, Fla., passed away on Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, in Chattanooga.
Mrs. Cox was born in Grundy, Va., to Thomas and Minda Looney and was a longtime resident of Ocala. She attended Central Church of Christ in Chattanooga and previously worked as a beautician.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Cox; and two sons, Charles and Patrick Cox.
Survivors include her children, Ruby (Harold) Speer of Knoxville, Kenneth Cox of Bristol, Tenn., and Jerry Cox of Chattanooga; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

William Love Sr.
William R. Love Sr., 90, of Chattanooga, died Saturday Oct. 24, 2009.
He worked for Texaco Inc. for 34 years, retiring in 1981 as vice president and comptroller. He was in the U.S. Navy from 1942-47 with the rank of lieutenant commander. He served in the Pacific on the USS Holland and at the Brooklyn Navy Yard following the Second World War, having responsibility for disposing of 400 Navy ships. He was a proud graduate of Dalton, Ga., High School (1936) and the University of Chattanooga (1941). He attended Northwestern University Graduate School of Business, and Harvard University. He was a member of First-Centenary United Methodist Church, the board of Baroness Erlanger Hospital, Chancellor’s Round Table of UTC and the UT Development Council, Fairyland Club, Lookout Mountain Golf Club and the Mountain City Club.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Miriam Dodson Landress Love, in 2003. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harrison M. Love Sr.; brothers, John M. Love Sr. and Harrison M. Love Jr.; aunt, Virginia Skelton; sister-in-law, Virginia Coggins; and granddaughter, Jennifer R. Love.
Surviving relatives include sons, William R. Love Jr. and wife, Jackie, of Chattanooga, Thomas H. Love and wife, Carol, of Georgetown, Del.; daughters, Amelia Martin Love Howard and husband Thomas, of Short Hills, N.J., and Mary Virginia Love and husband, Alan Sall, of Snohomish, Wash.; four grandchildren, William Perry Love and wife, Vikki, of Dayton, Ohio, Samuel Howard and Lucas Sall; four great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Mrs. John M. Love, Mrs. Harry Love Jr., Mrs. Hiram Chamberlain III, Mrs. Selden W. Landress, and brother-in-law and spouse, Mr. and Mrs. Ben S. Landress, all of Chattanooga.

Jessie Ruth Hickman Petty passed away Friday, Oct. 30, 2009.
She was born April 17, 1919, to the late Sam and Ola McGill Hickman of Soddy, Tenn. Jessie was a loving mother, a member of Oak Street Baptist Church and a lifelong member of the Mayflower Chapter of Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Paul W. Petty; brothers, Carl, Lewis and Bob Hickman; and twin sister, Grace Nunley.
She is survived by daughter, Marcella Shipley; son, Samuel (Pat) Petty; granddaughters, Kim Shipley and Sara Petty; grandson, Mike Shipley; half sister, Sara Elizabeth Brown, of Rome, Ga.; and half brother, Jack Hickman, of Soddy.
The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, in the funeral home chapel with Dr. David McNabb officiating.

Richard Schmitt
Richard “Dick” Schmitt, 78, of Chattanooga, left this earth to go home to Heaven on Friday Oct. 30, 2009.
He was a loving and devoted husband, daddy, papaw and brother. Richard was an active member of Morris Hill Baptist Church. He was also a veteran of the Korean War, a member of the East Lake Lodge and Alhambra Shrine, where he rode in the Honda Unit. He was a residential builder for many years as a partner with J.W. Walters in S&W Construction and their reputation of building excellent homes was known throughout Chattanooga.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Schmitt (they would have celebrated their 57-year anniversary on Sunday, Nov. 1); daughters, Cathy Ashby and husband, Steve, Gayle Schoenborn and husband, Michael; grandchildren, Brent Ashby, Tyson Ashby, Nick Schoenborn and Jennifer Schoenborn; great-grandchildren, Gavin Ashby, Hilary Ashby and Riley Ashby; brothers, Bill Schmitt, Bob Schmitt and Jim Schmitt; several nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Denton Smith, 83, of Signal Mountain, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009 in an area hospital.

Josephine Thomas
Josephine Rhea Thomas passed away Thursday morning, Oct. 29, 2009, at a local Chattanooga hospital as a result of recent medical problems. She was 88 years old.
Josephine was born and raised in Somerville, Tenn. She attended Fayette County Schools, playing on the basketball team and graduating as valedictorian in 1939. She attended Southwestern in Memphis (now Rhodes College) and graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1943.
She worked as a X-ray technician in Oak Ridge during WWII and in Riverside, Calif., after the war. She returned to West Tennessee to work at Kennedy Hospital in 1947.
She married William A. Thomas, of Whiteville, Tenn., in 1950 (deceased) who became a Jackson, Tenn., architect from the 1950s through the late 1990s.
She was an active member of First Methodist Church of Jackson and involved with the Jackson Hoe and Hope Garden Club for many years.
For the past four years she has been attending Burks Methodist Church in Hixson.
She is survived by three sons, William A. “Bill” Thomas Jr., of Chattanooga, James Robert “Bob” Thomas, of Maryville, Tenn., Brian Rhea Thomas, of Knoxville; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2009, from the North Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons with the Rev. Paul Clayton officiating.
Visitation will be 5 until 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Bertha Vickery
Bertha S. Vickery died peacefully on Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, after an extended battle with cancer.
She was born in Cullman, Ala. on Aug. 18, 1935, to the late Joseph and Florence Speegle. She moved to Chattanooga in 1971 with her late husband, Ted Vickery. She retired after 20 years employment at Blood Assurance in 2008.
She was also employed many years at Wilkins Research in Chattanooga.
She is survived by two sons, Michael Tubbs (Wanda), Lake City, Fla. and Patrick Vickery, Chattanooga; two daughters, Sharon Herrod (Jerry) and Susan Phillips (Rick), of Chattanooga; and six grandchildren, Allison Phillips, Jeremy Herrod (Nicole), Leah Acree (Jason), Joey Tubbs (Julia), Julie Triplett (Austin), Jana Camp (Kris); and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters, Bonnie McCluskey, Frances Phillips and Barbara Tubbs, all from Cullman, Ala.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, at Cullman City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Moss Service Funeral Home, Cullman, Ala.

WHITWELL — Opal Mae Cross, 89, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009.
She was a member of Whitwell Cumberland Presbyterian Church, a member of Eastern Star and had 52 years of service at the USDA.
She was preceded in death by parents, George and Laura Cross; sisters, Nancy Lay and Jewell Prigmore; brother, George W. Cross.
Survivors include niece, Robin Sorenson, California; nephews Chris Lay, Washington, Michael Cross, Nashville, Steven Prigmore and Phil Prigmore, both of California.
A graveside service will be held at Red Hill Cemetery at 1 p.m. CST Monday.

WHITWELL — Tommy Melvin “TJ” Smith Jr., 23, passed away Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Glenna Smith; uncle, Johnny Zeman.

SPRING CITY — Henrietta C. Tallent, 89, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at the Spring City Care Center.
Born in Spring City, she was the daughter of the late James Oliver and Mary Darwin Crosby. Henrietta was a graduate of Spring City High School, a lifetime member of the Rhea County Historical Society, and a member of the Wolf Creek Baptist Church.
Henrietta was preceded in death by her husband, Seth Tallent; and her sisters, Imogene, Florence and Mattie Crosby, and Ella Mae Bendix.
Survivors include her sons, William Joseph “Joe” Tallent, of Concord, N.C., Paul Tallent, of Spring City, James Tallent, of Huntersville, N.C., Glen Tallent, of Daniels, W.Va.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Forgey officiating.
Interment will follow in the Spring City Cemetery.

RINGGOLD — Robert W. Davis, 84, passed away Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, in a local hospital.
He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and North Georgia areas and a member of Poplar Springs Baptist. Mr. Davis was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Normandy, France, in WWII.
He was preceded in death by son, Robert Davis Jr.

Janice Dunlop
RINGGOLD — Janice Irene Lovell Dunlop, 51, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at her home after a four-year battle with cancer.
Janice was born on Nov. 1, 1957, in Lansing, Mich. She was the oldest of four children.
Janice graduated from Downers Grove High School in Chicago and the next year moved with her family to Phoenix, Ariz., where she attended junior college. In Phoenix, she met her husband, Ed Dunlop, who served on the staff of Alice Avenue Baptist Church. The couple was married on June 6, 1977, and three years later moved to Chattanooga. Janice and Ed entered full-time evangelism in March 1988 and have ministered on the road ever since.
Janice was a professional seamstress and made most of her children’s clothing. She homeschooled her children through high school. She loved the outdoors, loved to hike and loved to bike, often doing 60- and 70-mile rides.
She was predeceased by her mother, Twila Bigelow Lovell; and her brother, Paul Lovell.
Mrs. Dunlop is survived by her husband, Ed; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Brian Douglas; two sons, Steve, of Marietta, Ga., and Phillip, a student at Ambassador Baptist College; father, Richard Lovell, Phoenix; granddaughter, Tori Douglas; two brothers, the Rev. Phil Lovell, of Easley, S.C. and Ken Lovell, of Nashville.
Visitation will be in Stanley Heights Baptist Church, today at 1:15 p.m.
The Rev. Brent Baughman and the Rev. Phil Lovell will conduct the funeral at 2 p.m. in the church.
Interment will be in Parker’s Gap Cemetery.
