Ethel Craze
Ethel DeHart Craze, 81, of Chattanooga, went to be with the Lord Monday, Nov. 2, 2009.
Mrs. Craze was the daughter of the late Lula and J.D. DeHart. She was a member of Concord Baptist Church and retired from J.C. Penney.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John T. Craze; brothers, R.C. DeHart and Burlos DeHart.
Survivors include her son, John H. (Jo Ellen) Craze; three daughters, Linda (Bill) Renfron, Tammy (Tim) Langley and Mitzi (David) Stoner; sister, Lois Jackson; brother-in-law, Alvin Craze; grandchildren, Julie (Doug) Byers, Jonathan (Heather) Langley, Christopher and Kristin Stoner.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Roger DeHart, the Rev. Terry DeHart and the Rev. Richard DeHart officiating.
Interment will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.

Wanda Elsea
Wanda Gail Elsea, 53, of Soddy-Daisy, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009.
She was a member of Miracle Baptist Church and was employed with Gold Bond for 32 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Vivian Barbee; brother, Larry Barbee.
She is survived by her loving husband of 37 years, James Elsea; children, Michael and wife, Hannah Elsea, of Signal Mountain, Jeffery Elsea and Jennifer Lawson, both of Soddy-Daisy. She had several grandchildren and was loved by all of them.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Conaway and the Rev. Lavonne Powell officiating.
Interment will follow the service at Hamilton County Memorial Park.

Michael Eugene Norwood, 51, passed away Friday, Oct. 30, 2009.
He was well-known and loved resident of the Alton Park area.

Mary Jane Pendley
Mary Jane “MurMur” Pendley, 73, of East Ridge, passed away on Monday, Nov. 2, 2009.
Mrs. Pendley was a member of East Ridge Baptist Church where she served as the Minister to the Deaf and Silent Workers Sunday School Class. She was employed as an interpreter at Orange Grove School, Sorenson Video Relay Services, and Lead Interpreter at Chattanooga State for 25 years. She graduated from Central High School Class of 1954 and was a member of Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and CODA (Children of Deaf Adults).
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas L. Duke.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years and first grade sweetheart, Slater (Mac) Pendley; daughters, Tonya (Andy) Mullins and Dessa (Eddie) Hall; sons, Leon and Keith Pendley; grandchildren, Zach Lane, Travis Mavity, Kevin Hall, Amber Mullins Jones, Jerrica Pendley, Drew Mullins, Slater Pendley and Emily Pendley; great-grandchildren, Julie Ann Mavity and Emma Jane Hall; stepgreat-grandchild, Nolan Carter; sisters, Iva Sue (Gary) Tallent, of Rossville, and Kay Clara (Roy) White, of Bozeman, Mont.; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Vivian Inez Peoples, 70, of Georgetown, passed away Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at her home.

John Smyth
John Mitchell Smyth went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at the age of 82.
He was a loving husband of 51 years, a devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, friend, citizen and patriot. As husband, father and grandfather, he was someone more special than words. His love was mixed with friendship and a million favorite memories that will always last. He was a hand within your hand enfolded with love and understanding. He gave you a feeling that made you wonder what you would ever do without him, and no one was loved more dearly.
Born in Beattyville, Ky., he was a graduate of Lee County High School. John served his country, first as a Merchant Marine and then in the U.S. Army serving in Germany. After his service in the Army he began his varied work career as a railway mail clerk, worked with his father in the Lee County Clerk’s Office and served as a Kentucky State Trooper. He began his career with L&N Railroad as Inspector of Police before retiring after 33 years as a Train Master with CSX Railroad. Mr. Smyth was a 50-year member of Andrew Jackson Lodge 173 F&AM and was also a member of Alcazar Shrine Temple, both in Montgomery, Ala. He was also a Kentucky Colonel of which he was very proud.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Smyth; daughters, Pam (Max) Frisbee, Ooltewah, Kimberly Norcross, Ringgold; son, Randy (Sherry) Smyth, Chattanooga; sisters, Dorothy Noland, Marjorie Barnett; brother, Melvin Smyth, all of Lexington, Ky.; grandchildren, who will serve as honorary pallbearers, Brennen Smyth, Nick, Josh, Will and Wes Frisbee, Abby Norcross, Jennifer (Troy) Teems, Stephanie (Kent) Callison, Kara (Scott) Stevenson, Ryan (Brooke) Swilling and Christen (Nathan) Woody; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel with Pastor Fred Smith officiating.

Melvin Young
Melvin Asher Young died at the age of 79 on Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, after a prolonged illness.
Mel was well known in the community as a Certified Public Accountant, author, wine connoisseur, Civil War scholar and community activist.
A 1952 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, he served his country in the military during the Korean conflict and in Japan. He loved talking about his travels in Southeast Asia as a young lieutenant. He was very proud of his degree from West Point and his military service.
Young was a member of Mizpah Congregation and served as its president. He was also president of the Jewish Community Center in Chattanooga.
Mel Young was known as the Wine Professor as he taught the course in Wine Appreciation at the University of Tennessee for 30 years. He had an extensive wine cellar and was known to donate fine wines generously to charities.
His most important avocation was his scholarly research and writing about the War Between the States, particularly the areas of Jewish military involvement. He was considered to be an expert on particular areas of the Civil War and served as a resource for historians and writers. He was invited to do an exhibit on Jewish military during the War Between the States at the Ford Theatre in Washington, D.C. Young was the author of “Where They Lie,” “The Last Order of the Lost Cause,” “Bitter Tears I Shed for Thee,” and his last book “Uriah” which was published in 2008. Young was frequently invited to be a guest speaker on the Civil War.
Mel Young was born in St. Louis, Mo., in 1930 to Mary and Leon Young.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sonia; and his daughter, Melanie Anne Young-Ransom who resides in New York City with her husband, David. He is also survived by a sister, Faith Minnen (Lionel), of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two nephews, Jonathan Minnen (Judy), of Atlanta and Bradley Minnen (Bonnie), of St. Petersburg; brother and sister-in-law, David and Finette Winer, of Chattanooga, niece, Allison Koeneman (Steve), of Atlanta and several great-nieces and nephews.
For those who knew Mel Young, they will remember his love of family and friends, his love of life and country, his quick wit and caring personality and his loyalty to those he loved and befriended.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made to Mizpah Congregation (923 McCallie Ave., Chattanooga 37403), the West Point Jewish Chapel Fund (750 Merrit, West Point, NY 10996), the Chattanooga Theatre Centre (400 River St., Chattanooga 37405) and the McKamey Animal Care & Adoption Center (4500 N. Access Road, Chattanooga, 37415).
Mel Young will be laid to rest at Chattanooga National Cemetery at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6.
Friends are invited to a celebration of his life at Mizpah Congregation at 923 McCallie at noon.
There will no visitation.

TRACY CITY — Willie Mae Geary, 76, passed away Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at the Haven of Rest in Tracy City.
Willie Mae along with her husband, Dennis Geary founded the Haven of Rest Retirement Home in January of 1979.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Elizabeth Thomas; and sister, Ellen Thomas.

Lisa worked for Advanced Check Cash Advance as a Manager, and was preceded in death by her mother, Lena Trixie Sherlin; son, Terry Lynn Hagan Jr.; and siblings, Yvonne Kilgore, and Johnny Sherlin.
Survivors include her husband, Terry Lynn Hagan; children, Justin Hagan, Erica Hagan, all of Rossville; father, Lum Sherlin, of Flintstone; siblings, Judy Simmons, of Chickamauga, Nancy (David) Wynne, Carl (Sherry) Sherlin, all of Rossville; grandchildren, Brendan and Alex; and several nieces and nephews.

LAWRENCEVILLE — Marvin Springston, 62, died Monday, Nov. 2, 2009.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Springston; and parents, Charles and Juanita Springston.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Etheridge Springston; children, Jonathan Springston, of Atlanta, Jason and Sarah Springston, of Fallbrook, Calif.; grandson, Abbott Springston.
Mr. Springston was a graduate of UGA, a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran and a member of Smoke Rise Baptist Church. He loved to watch Georgia football, ride bicycles, listen to music and read.
