N.Y. City Mayor Bloomberg wins

Big Apple New York City has a reputation for being “ungovernable.” But former Republican, and more recently “nonpartisan,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg had won some applause for his leadership of the city in the years after the administration of Rudy Giuliani, who was mayor at the time of the horrible Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York.

It didn’t hurt that he is a billionaire who spent about $100 million — of his own money! — on his re-election campaign. Only about 1.1 million votes were cast, from among 4.5 million registered voters. But Mayor Bloomberg won his third term — by only about 51,000 votes over Democratic city Comptroller William Thompson Jr.

Ah, New York!
