Chattanooga: Man killed while trying to help pedestrian hit by car

A man who may have been trying to help a pedestrian who’d been hit by a car Thursday was hit by another car and killed.

Frederick Cross, 61, of Chattanooga was killed on McCallie Avenue when he stopped and got out of his Dodge pickup after a pedestrian was struck by another driver, Chattanooga police spokeswoman Officer Rebecca Royval said in a news release.

Mr. Cross was hit by a Jeep Cherokee driven by Carly Wells of Lynchburg, Tenn. about 4:15 p.m., Officer Royval said. Ms. Wells told police she was focused on the crash and didn’t see the truck stopped in front of her, Officer Royval said.

Police have not yet issued charges in connection with the incident, the officer said.

Just before Mr. Cross was killed, Dewey Edalgo of Cartersville, Ga., was hit by a Mitsubishi Lancer driven by Shenelle Duncan, police said. Ms. Duncan was traveling west on McCallie, crossing over the railroad bridge, when a pedestrian walked in front of the car, Officer Royval said.

Ms. Duncan and witnesses told police that Mr. Edalgo began crossing the street and tried to cross back to the sidewalk when he saw the car coming, Officer Royval.

The car could not avoid hitting Mr. Edalgo, who is currently in critical condition at Erlanger hospital, Officer Royval said.

No charges were filed in connection with the incident.
