ECS, St. George's play for DII-A title

With one slight change in momentum, Evangelical Christian School found its way to the Division II-A state soccer final.

UT-Martin commitment Abi Sanvee scored two goals and the ECS defense held tough against University School of Jackson super sophomore Honeye Heydari. The Lady Eagles won 3-1 and advanced to today's championship game against St. George's.

This marks the first time a soccer team from the Cordova school has advanced to a final.

The win was a relief for ECS coach Alexis Boyd, who wasn't pleased with how her team came to play.

"We didn't come out quite like I thought they would; in fact, we were a step slow," Boyd said.

"I'm proud of the girls in that they found a way to pull it out. It wasn't their best; in fact, it's not even close. Give credit to USJ; they found a way to challenge us, and they did."

Heydari scored USJ's goal. Senior Allie Albright scored the other ECS goal.

* St. George's 5, St. Mary's 0: At Baylor, Mary Patterson and Lindsey Anne Grisham had two goals each as St. George's advanced to its third consecutive Division II-A state championship game. The Lady Gryphons won the title in 2007 and lost in two overtimes last year.

* St. Agnes 3, Father Ryan 1: At Baylor, St. Agnes ousted the defending Division II-AA state champion, retaking the lead on a Mackenze Parma goal 18 minutes into the second half and adding another by Danielle Pirozzi with under 10 minutes to go. Camilla Buoni had the team's first goal four minutes into the game, but Father Ryan's Katherine Rodriguez tied it on a penalty kick in the second half.

* Christian Academy of Knoxville 2, Christ Presbyterian 1: At Chattanooga Christian, Ruthie Edmonds and Samford commitment Brittany Hoffman scored goals for the top-ranked Lady Warriors (23-0-1), who advanced to Saturday's Class A/AA final against third-ranked Notre Dame. CPA's goal came from Amy Maksimowicz in the 75th minute.

* Houston 1, Dobyns-Bennett 0: At GPS, the nationally ranked Lady Mustangs (18-1-2) advanced to the Class AAA final as Bailey Bussart scored a goal with 16 seconds remaining.

* Franklin 2, Oak Ridge 1: At GPS, Morgan Zigelsky scored two goals -- one in the first half off a penalty kick and the second 1:24 into the second half off an assist from Anna Grigg -- to move on to face Houston in Saturday's AAA final at GPS.
