Robert Altman

Robert Mark Altman passed away suddenly on Monday Nov 2, 2009, at his farm in Alabama.

All who knew him would agree he was a kind and generous man that loved his family.

He was a loving son to his parents, Robert Altman and June Altman.

He was a devoted husband to his wife Lisa, and a loving father to his three beautiful daughters, Amber, Ashley and Alise. He was a proud Pa to his new granddaughter, Marki. He was a great brother to Melvin and Anita.

He was a caring friend. He touched many people and will be greatly missed.

Patricia Bryan

Patricia Ann Whatley-Bryan, 58, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at her residence.

She was an Administrative Support Assistant II with the city of Chattanooga. She was a member of Mt. Paran Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her spouse, Dr. James Edward Bryan; father, Lois Whatley Jr.; mother, Willie Ann McCorkle; grandparents, Lois Sr. and Florence Whatley.

Survivors: sisters, Sandra (Jerome) Kirby, of Chattanooga, Florette (Ben) Jones and Beverly Mauldin, both of Tampa, Fla.; uncles, devoted, Jimmie Whatley, of Chattanooga and Clarence (Samjo) Whatley, of Seoul, Korea; aunts, Ruby Stephenson and Mary Goins, both of Chattanooga; devoted niece, Angela Maffett (Arthur) Terry; nephews, George Maffett III and P. Dedric Maffett; beloved goddaughters, Renata Ramsey and Ashley Davis; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives; special friends, Jeannie McElroy, Gloria Jarrett, L.B. Griffith and a host of other friends.

Alvia Campbell

Alvia Genne Campbell, 75, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at Memorial Hospital.

He was retired from the city of Lafayette, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Anna Belle Campbell.

He is survived by his children: Kathy (Mark) Crawley and Terry W. Hicks, Tammy Adams, Allan Barnes and Larry Barnes; grandchildren, Allen Crawley, Andrew Crawley, Cody Luttrell, Cori Luttrell, Cayli Luttrell, Sara Adams, Ben Adams, Travis Barnes, Ashlyn Barnes, Sara Barnes, Chase Barnes, Tyler Barnes, Melinda Gallagher. Special friends, James and Peggy Crawley and Bethany Daniels.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at the City Cemetery of Lafayette, Tenn.

Frances Chappell

Frances Fentress Chappell, 91, passed away Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009.

Mrs. Chappell was born to the late Julia Blake Fentress and Baxter Lee Fentress, of Greensboro, N.C. Also, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward W. Chappell; son, Jerry R. Chappell; and brother, Baxter Lee Fentress Jr.

Mrs. Chappell had been a resident of Signal Mountain with her family since 1948. She was a very devoted member of Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church. She frequently participated in family activities; was active in the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts; and was an active leader/advisor and friend.

Mrs. Chappell’s most recent activities included gardening, playing bridge and being active in the Chattanooga Kennel Club. She had West Highland Terriers and Cairn Terriers.

Survivors include her son, Stephen L. Chappell, of Knoxville; daughter, Julie Chappell (Robert) Knighton, of Signal Mountain; grandson, Chad Chappell, of Atlanta; grandson, Chris Chappell; granddaughter, Alexis Chappel; and her precious little dog, Holly Blake. She was a cherished mother and friend and so loved.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday in the Marr Chapel of Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church with Dr. William Dudley officiating.

Cora Lucille Chatham, 69, of Sale Creek, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009.

Dr. Andre’ Hammonds

Dr. Andre’ Hammonds, 73, formerly of Chattanooga, passed away on Monday, Nov. 2, 2009 in Indianapolis, Ind.

Dr. Hammonds was an extraordinary man who will be deeply missed by all. Friends who knew him personally can say that he was a remarkable individual who could only be characterized by principles of honor. Although he exuberated strength and intellect, he was a gentle and modest man. At a young age, he was on a mission to make his parents proud. As a 1954 graduate of Howard High School, he was named class Salutatorian. After graduating high school, he attended Morehouse College. As a student at Morehouse, he traveled to study at the University of Grenoble in Paris, France where he received a certificate of French studies in 1958. In 1959, Andre’ completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville where he was the first African American to earn a doctoral degree in the field of Sociology. After completing his PhD in Sociology, Dr. Hammonds became an associate professor of sociology department at Winston-Salem State College in Winston-Salem, SC. He later became a Professor of Sociology at the Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana where he retired in 1997 after 30 years of service. Dr. Hammonds definitely left his mark at the University by his considerable impact through service to students and professional organizations. He received the Caleb Mills Teaching Award in 1973. In 1997, he was awarded the Distinguished Faculty Service Award. In 1998, he was awarded the President’s Medal from ISU. He served as member of Faculty Senate, on numerous thesis committees for master’s and doctoral students, and on numerous committees in the department in the College of Arts and Sciences as well as University wide.

Andre’ was a devoted community leader and a faithful contributor to many charitable organizations. He was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Terre haute, Indiana and Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry. He was a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., life member of NAACP, board member of Indiana United Methodist Children Home since 1972, and a member of 4C’s Sojourners and the National Association of African American RV. He was known to have a special love for camping.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Marshall and Auddie Hammonds Sr.; brother, Mashall Hammonds Jr. and sister, Bobbie Lee Fleming.

Those left to cherish his loving memories his devoted wife of 49 years, Dorcas Hammonds; son, Derek (Tracey) Hammonds, Yonkers, N.Y.; daughter, Deidre Hammonds, Indianapolis, Ind.; grandchild, Shaniah Hammonds, Yonkers, N.Y.; sisters, Mildred Hurst and Idalene (Robert) Baine; nieces, Beverly Poinson, Sharron (Shelton) Langford, all of Chattanooga; Charlene Starling, Atlanta, Monique Poinson, DeAndrea Cooper, Monica (Emeri) Gordon, Robin Smith; nephews, Robert Baine Jr., Chattanooga; Terry Fleming, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; LeBron and Kenneth (Linda) Fleming, Ronald, Larry and DeWayne Hammonds, all of Cleveland, Ohio; a host of cousins, great-nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at Barnes United Methodist Church, 900 West 30th St., Indianapolis, Ind.

Burial will follow at Washington Park North Cemetery. Viewing will from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 6, 2009 at Stuart Mortuary, 2201 N. Illinois St.

Earlyne Hinson

Earlyne Hinson, 84, formerly of Chattanooga, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, in Duluth, Ga.

Mrs. Hinson was born in Celina, Tenn., to Oscar and Mae Etta Reed. She was a former member of Brainerd Church of Christ, and a retired school teacher for Chattanooga City Schools.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Russell C. Hinson; daughter, Margie Bullock and her husband, Rick, of Duluth, Ga.; and grandsons, Rusty, Jody and Zach.

Memorial donations may be made to Brainerd Church of Christ.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today, Nov. 6, 2009, at Chattanooga National Cemetery. A procession will leave from the funeral home at 9:15 a.m.

Ralph Jones Sr.

Ralph Edward Jones Sr., 79, of Hixson, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at this home.

Mr. Jones was a veteran of the United States Army.

He was employed with Plumbers and Steamfitters local #43 for 55 years and was a Steamfitter Apprentice Instructor at Sequoyah Nuclear plant for several years. He was a Mechanical Building Inspector for the city of Chattanooga for several years prior to his retirement.

He was a man who enjoyed a good joke especially when he was the instigator of it.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Jones; parents, Sam and Annie Jones; grandson, Spencer Wells Jones.

Survivors include his sons, Terry (Kathy) Jones, and Eddie Jones; daughters, Leslie (Brian) Scoggins and Connie (Alan) Jones; grandchildren, Lorin Jones, Laura Jones and Laura Allison Brown; sisters, Betty Jolly, and Caroline (Fernando) Ochoa; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at the North Chapel.

Interment will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 6, and Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the North Chapel.

Bobby Laymon

Charles Robert “Bobby” Laymon died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at the age of 40.

Bobby left behind his parents, James Daniel Laymon, of Hixson and Barbara Laymon, of Washington State; brother, Dwayne Frazier, of Chattanooga; sister, Debra Seabolt, of Washington State; nieces and nephews, Travis (Melissa) Alderman, Stacy (Adam) Stroup and Shawn Fraizer; great-nieces and nephews, Brooke, Joseph, Chelsea, Braden and Aikiko; special aunt, Judy Bittner, of Hixson along with several aunts, uncles and cousins. Bobby also left behind many lifelong friends including John Murphy and Jason Rogers.

Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009 at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Carl Hunsucker officiating.

Clifford Lyle

Clifford Lyle, 55, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, in a local hospital.

He was formerly employed by Shaw Industries and was a member of Nazarene Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Edna Lyle Sr.; and brother, Lester Lyle.

Survivors: wife, Cassandra Lyle; son, Maurice (Jennifer) Daniels; daughters, Niesha Carnes, Tameka Stallion and Onita Stallion; eight grandchildren; brothers, David (Wanda) Lyle Jr., Judge (Joyce) Lyle and James Brown; sisters, Betty J. John Mitchell III

John C. Mitchell III, 61, of Soddy-Daisy passed away at Vanderbilt Hospital on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009.

He was born Sept. 26, 1948.

John graduated from Central High School and The University of Alabama in Florence, Alabama. He was a Vietnam veteran of the USAF. He retired from TVA after 28 years of service. John was an avid reader and had a passion for mission work, having served in several countries. He was a member of Mountain Creek Church of Christ.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John C. Mitchell, II and Freda Parkhurst Mitchell.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Nancy C. Mitchell; sons, John Raymond, Andy (Wendy), Thomas (Callie), Ryan Stolpmann (Denise); daughter-in-law, Susan Mitchell; grandsons, Eli and Ethan Mitchell; brother, Bill (Elise); sister, Jan (Larry) Akins and close family friend Kelly Hemming.

John had a special bond with his daughter-in-law, Callie, who gave him the gift of life.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mountain Creek Church of Christ with Phil Terry and Ed Ditto officiating.

Interment will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Dianne Petty

Lynda “Dianne” Petty, 58, of Ooltewah, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

She was a member of Ridgedale Baptist Church and was an employee at Erlanger Hospital for over 30 years. Dianne loved her work and enjoyed her friends at Erlanger as she was affectionately called “Lady Di”. She loved her family and adored her grandbabies. Dianne was a devoted wife for 39 years.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Mildred and Vernon Brewer.

Surviving relatives: husband, Johnny; son, Johnny Petty Jr. and wife, Brandy; daughter, Kellie Petty Richmond and husband, Gary; brothers, Lee Brewer, of Fort Oglethorpe, Vern Brewer, of LaMirada, Calif., Douglas Brewer, of Rossville; sister, Joyce Parker, of East Ridge; grandchildren, Tyler Dean Lee, Kylie Dianne Richmond, Johnny Petty III, Jordan Riley Petty; and several nieces and nephews.

Donald Sedman

Donald Morgan Sedman, 80, finished his course and won the victory at home on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009.

Donald was born on March 7, 1929 in Chattanooga to Clyde and Ann Sedman. On June 22, 1951, he was married to the love of his life, Barbara Louise Rich. They raised five children together and were married for 58 years. He was an Ordained Bishop of the Church of God and a member of Dividing Ridge Church of God. He pastored several churches in the Nebraska, Mississippi and Tennessee areas.

Donald loved life and cherished his wife, children and grandchildren. He loved being around his family.

He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Louise Sedman; children, Sharon (Roger) Bryson, Judy (Phil) Whitlatch, Janet (Wyman) Okuma, Gayle (Lonnie) Edwards, Donald Sedman; his sister, Barbara Griffith, of Atlanta; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Ann Sedman; brothers, Clyde Sedman, Grant Sedman, Benny Sedman; and sister, Nancy Koss.

Mamie L. Strickland, 73, of Chattanooga passed away Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2009.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Macker Strickland Sr.; and son, Grayling Strickland.

Donnetta Renee Hood Yates, 49, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009.

She was born Sept. 15, 1960 to Lena Hicks and Lonnie Hood Sr.

Proceeding her in death was her father, Eddie L. Hicks.

Those left to cherish her loving memories include her mother, Lena Hicks; father, Lonnie Hood Sr.; children, Cornelius (Stacy) Yates, Jamarva Chantel Yates and Anthony Maurice Yates; siblings, Lonnie Hood Jr., Darryl (Valerie) Van Hood, Linda Hood, LaShaunda (Eric) McIntyre and Deborah (Michael) Rudolph; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; one aunt and uncle, as well as many other friends.

Melvin Young

Melvin Asher Young died at the age of 79 on Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, after a prolonged illness.

Mel was well known in the community as a Certified Public Accountant, author, wine connoisseur, Civil War scholar and community activist.

A 1952 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, he served his country in the military during the Korean conflict and in Japan. He loved talking about his travels in Southeast Asia as a young lieutenant. He was very proud of his degree from West Point and his military service.

Young was a member of Mizpah Congregation and served as its president. He was also president of the Jewish Community Center in Chattanooga.

Mel Young was known as the Wine Professor as he taught the course in Wine Appreciation at the University of Tennessee for 30 years. He had an extensive wine cellar and was known to donate fine wines generously to charities.

His most important avocation was his scholarly research and writing about the War Between the States, particularly the areas of Jewish military involvement. He was considered to be an expert on particular areas of the Civil War and served as a resource for historians and writers. He was invited to do an exhibit on Jewish military during the War Between the States at the Ford Theatre in Washington, D.C. Young was the author of “Where They Lie,” “The Last Order of the Lost Cause,” “Bitter Tears I Shed for Thee,” and his last book “Uriah” which was published in 2008. Young was frequently invited to be a guest speaker on the Civil War.

Mel Young was born in St. Louis, Mo., in 1930 to Mary and Leon Young.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sonia; and his daughter, Melanie Anne Young-Ransom who resides in New York City with her husband David. He is also survived by a sister, Faith Minnen (Lionel), of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two nephews, Jonathan Minnen (Judy), of Atlanta and Bradley Minnen (Bonnie), of St. Petersburg; brother and sister-in-law, David and Finette Winer, of Chattanooga, niece, Allison Koeneman (Steve), of Atlanta and several great-nieces and nephews.

For those who knew Mel Young, they will remember his love of family and friends, his love of life and country, his quick wit and caring personality and his loyalty to those he loved and befriended.

Mel Young will be laid to rest at Chattanooga National Cemetery at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 6.

DUNLAP — Perus Alden “P.A.” Green Jr. died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009 in Dunlap.

He was born May 12, 1923 in Tatesville, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by wife, Aleen Kennedy Green; parents, Perus Alden Green Sr. and Mary Blanche Minton Green; siblings, Robert Greene, Bruce Greene, Jesse (Peck) Green, Grace Green Frassrand, Howard Greene, Elizabeth Green Lynn, Joe Dillon Green, Berta Ruth Green Long; and two infant sons, Larry and Joseph.

P.A. is survived by daughter Linda Green (D.J.) Johnson, Dunlap; grandchildren, Nate Johnson, Starkville, Miss., Sara Grace Johnson (Brad) Carter, Nashville; sisters, Johnnie Sue Morgan, Wanda June Henry; and nieces and nephews too numerous to list.

P.A. was born at home and educated in Grundy and Sequatchie counties. He entered Civilian Conservation Corps as a teenager and later served his country during World War II in the Army tank corps. After receiving a medical discharge, he worked for a time in the military industry in Detroit where he met and married Aleen Kennedy of Lawrenceville, Ga. After frequent moves, the family settled in Atlanta where P.A. owned and operated several Standard/Chevron Oil service stations. He was initiated, passed, and raised a Master Mason in E.A. Minor Lodge in Lithonia, Ga., and served as Past Master, various chairs, and ultimately Past Master and Director of Work. He was in the York Right and Knights Templar and served as a Rainbow adviser.

He semi-retired in 1987 and returned with Aleen to the home for which he had always longed, Dunlap. He surveyed part-time with Gene Reed (at age 72), and retired completely in 1995. In Dunlap, P.A. immersed himself in civic organizations such as the VFW, American Legion, and Dunlap Lodge #693. He was an avid gardener and watched the Braves with religious fervor. He was a member, Deacon, and Sunday School teacher at Dunlap First Baptist. He read to children at Griffith Elementary School, receiving the Hero of the Year award there in 2007.

P.A. was a friend to all. His generosity is legendary. He often befriended those who were less fortunate. In his later years he enjoyed his small Fredonia Mountain orchard and garden, Green Acres. He enjoyed passing on lessons in gardening, lessons in living and produce from the farm. He will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed.

Dorothy Price

DUNLAP — Dorothy Jane “Dot Dot” Price, 73, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, in a Chattanooga hospital from injuries received in an automobile accident.

She was a graduate of Sequatchie County High School, a member of Dunlap First Baptist Church and a retiree of the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom W. and Leila A. Price; three brothers, Armon “Fatty” Grady and Marvin “Bob” Price.

She is survived by her sister, Tressie Mae (L.G.) Headrick; and brother, Wayne (Romanza) Price, both of Rossville; sister-in-law, Lorraine Price of Dunlap; nieces, Cindy and Debbie Price; nephews, Marvin and Tony Price; many other relatives and friends; and her loving and faithful companion, her little dog Foxy Lady.

The family would like to express their appreciation for all the visits, phone calls, cards and especially all the prayers they have received during this trying time. They would like to extend special thanks to Fern Lockhart for all the hard work, help and comfort she has given us during this time.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. CST in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Randy Harmon officiating.

ROSSVILLE — Mickey Lynn Powell 55, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, in a local hospital.

He was a lifelong resident of the North Georgia area and was a well-known area route salesman for Mayfield Dairy for the past 26 years. Mr. Powell was an avid Georgia Bull Dogs football fan.

He was preceded in death by his father, Franklin Eugene Powell.

FLINTSTONE — Oliver B. Stone, 74, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009.

He was a lifelong resident of the North Georgia area and was a member of South Rossville Baptist Church for more than 21 years. He was previously employed with U.S. Soil Pipe as an Iron Pourer for more than 10 years and loved going to church. He also enjoyed fishing, camping and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Beatrice Stone; sisters, Jewell Arrington and Juanita Sprouse; and brother, Larry Stone.

Survivors include his loving wife of more than 56 years, Kathleen Stone, of Flintstone, Ga.; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Bill Jones, of Flintstone, and Loretta and Mark McDonald, of Chickamauga, Ga.; brothers, Tommy Stone and G.W. ROCK SPRING — Matthew “Todd” Wooten, 27, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009.

He was born in Fort Oglethorpe, and had been a lifelong resident of Walker County, Ga. He was a graduate of the Class of 2000 from Ridgeland High School. He was currently working for the U.S. Postal Service in Ringgold, Georgia and Wal-Mart in Fort Oglethorpe. He enjoyed greeting everyone he met with a smile, listening to music, watching Major League baseball and NFL Football. He was a member of Mission Glen Baptist Church in Rossville.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Sherry Lorena Burrows Wooten.

He is survived by his father, Robert Wooten, of Rock Spring, Ga.; brother and sister-in-law, Shaun and Amber Wooten, of Buford, Ga.; sister: Angela Lynn Gipson, of Illinois; a niece and a nephew, Kayla and Daniel Gipson; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

The family will receive friends all day today and Saturday morning prior to the service.
