Tennessee: Teen charged in death of infant under her care

MEMPHIS — A 16-year-old Memphis girl, left to watch five children while a baby sitter ran errands, is charged with an infant’s death.

The Commercial Appeal quoted police in reporting Jasmine Malone was charged Thursday with first-degree murder in the perpetration of aggravated child abuse after the Shelby County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled 10-month-old Wynter Roberts’ death a homicide from blunt force trauma.

Police were called to a house Saturday and told the baby girl had fallen off a bed and stopped breathing. The unresponsive baby was taken to Le Bonheur (leh-BON’-uhr) Children’s Medical Center, where she died Sunday.

Authorities said the home is an unlicensed day care center. A license is required only if five or more children not related to the caregiver and being cared for in the home.
