New opportunities for volunteers

HOSPICE OF CHATTANOOGA

* Patient Care volunteer: Visit patients in their homes or nursing homes.

* Bereavement Caller: Call families 90 days after their loved one has died for bereavement support.

* Health Fairs: Staff booth at area health fairs.

* Pediatric Volunteers: Assist families and children through listening, reading, playing music, cooking or light housekeeping.

* Receptionist: Answer telephone in Cleveland or Dayton offices, flexible scheduling. 892-4289, ext. 256.

MCKAMEY ANIMAL CARE AND ADOPTION CENTER

To volunteer for any of these positions, call Tricia Sebes, 425-3750.

* Petcare Adoption: Petcare Warehouse is hosting adoptions at the store the fourth Friday of every month from 4 to 7 p.m. Volunteers are needed to staff this program; four-hour commitment once a month.

* PetSmart Adopt-a-thon: Petsmart is hosting an adopt-a-thon Nov. 13-15. For every animal adopted, Petsmart Charities will make a donation to the center. Volunteers are needed to staff this event 2-5 p.m. Friday, 12:30-6 p.m. Saturday, 1-5 p.m. Sunday; flexible scheduling available.

SALVATION ARMY

* Angel Tree: Distribute gifts to needy families, host Christmas parties for elderly, help raise clothes and toys for children and senior adults.

* Bell Ringers: Ring kettle bells in Cleveland and Chattanooga.

* Donation Drives: Host drives for toiletries, canned food and baby supplies for families served by Salvation Army.

* Holiday Meal: Serve Thanksgiving and Christmas meals to homeless.

SAMARITAN CENTER

* Book Specialist: Separate and price donated books and magazines, requires five to 10 hours per week.

* Landscaper: Help with yard work for clients who can't do it themselves.

* Office Assistant: Make copies, compile reports, create spread sheets, assist with bulk mailings and filing.

* Small Sort Organizer: Volunteer will organize sorting area.

* Sort and Hang: Help separate items donated to center or hang clothing. Sorting requires four-hour shift one or two days a week, flexible scheduling for clothing work.

* Volunteer Nurses: Needed two to four hours per week to take blood pressure readings and answer medical questions. 238.7777, ext. 22.

UNITED WAY VOLUNTEER CENTER

To volunteer for any of these positions, call Windy Brooks at 752-0316.

* Alzheimer's Association: Office help needed two to four hours at a time, either sporadically or on a continuing schedule; also event staff needed.

* Association for Visual Arts: Greet visitors in gallery and answer phones on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

* Chattanooga Community Kitchen: Receptionists needed at day center, flexible scheduling between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. seven days a week.

* Children's Advocacy Center: Child and family companions needed, groundskeeper and maintenance/seasonal work assistance.

* Habitat for Humanity: Volunteer orientations first and third Fridays of each month at 10 a.m. and the second and fourth Thursday of each month at 5 p.m.

* Hope for the Inner City: Mentors for participants in CORE job classes needed: call program graduates on Friday mornings to get information on their employment status and support needs.

* Partnership for Families, Children and Adults: Adults needed to staff Dogwood Retail Shop, retail experience preferred but not required; some lifting required.

* Re-Start Center for Adult Education: Two test proctors needed Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; no training required.

* Signal Centers: Intern needed marketing/development to do data research, must have strong communication skills.

* St. Barnabas Nursing Home: Assist with bingo games on Wednesdays at 2 p.m. or Fridays at 10 a.m.; assistance also needed during Friday parties at 1:30 p.m.

* Tennessee River Gorge Trust: Event staff needed for film festival Nov. 13 and 15.

* Therapeutic Recreation Services: Parks and Recreation Department needs volunteers for programs and special events.

* Toys for Tots: Help market toy drive to local restaurants and businesses.

* WTVC Coats for Kids Drive: Deliver coats to cleaning location and pick up for distribution.
