Doris Abel

Doris Vivian Able, 88, of Red Bank, passed away Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, at her home.

She was a life long resident of Dayton, Tenn. and a member of the Dayton First United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John William Able; daughter, Carolyn Ann Abel Mickel; and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors: daughter, Joyce (Wayne) Burnett of Red Bank; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home, with the Rev. John C. Anderson officiating.

Interment in Abel Cemetery.

Visitation will be today, from 5-9 p.m.

Christine Avery

Christine Stephens Avery, 82, of Chattanooga, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009.

A native of Ft. Payne, Ala., she had lived here since 1970 and was a member of Bayside Baptist Church.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Quintelle Dean Avery; parents, Walter Washington Stephens Sr., Nallie Lee Burt Stephens; brothers, Harley Green Stephens and Walter Washington Stephens Jr.

Surviving are five nieces, Lana (Carlton) Floyd of Fyffe, Ala., Margaret (David) Bullock of Montgomery, Ala., Gwen (Dave) Brooks of Singapore, Janice (Jon) Simonton of Atlanta, Ga., Jane Stephens Evans of Ft. Payne; three nephews: Wayne Stephens, Steve (Anita) Stephens, Erik (Diana) Stephens, all of Ft. Payne; sister-in-law, Jean Stephens of Ft. Payne; several great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. EST Tuesday in the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home.

Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home 5-8 p.m. EST today.

Virginia Brown

Virginia Osborne “Jenny” Brown ,85, of East Ridge passed away Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009 in Kennesaw, Ga., where he had lived the past six months.

Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. in the South Crest Chapel with the Reverend Paul Williams officiating.

Interment will follow in the Yonah Memorial Gardens in Demorest, Ga.

The family will receive friends today from 9 a.m. until the funeral hour at the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home and Crematory, Rossville.

Louise Cooper

Louise Barker Cooper, passed away at her home on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, surrounded by her loving family.

Louise was 93 and a life time resident of Hixson, where her grandparents were early settlers. Having an excellent memory, she captured the attention of others with details in her story telling of Hixson’s early history. She had a great love of animals and enjoyed the companionship of many beloved pets over the years. Louise was of the Catholic faith and worked in her family’s business at L.R. Barker Grocery for over 30 years.

Mrs. Cooper was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd B. Cooper; parents, L.R. and Mamie Barker; and sisters, Beatrice Barker and Dorothy B. Bryson.

Survivors include her children, Ann (Neil) Ritter of Kissimmee, Fla., Dorothy (Paul) Sisemore of Lakeland, Fla., Lloyd Cooper of Hixson, Carole (Richard) Thomas of Hixson; grandchildren, Mark, Daniel and Matthew (Karen) Ritter of Orlando, Fla., Paul Sisemore of Lakeland, Aimee Sisemore of Hixson, Tyler (Lauren) Thomas of Chattanooga, and Austin Thomas of Hixson; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Emily Ritter of Orlando; sisters, Elizabeth Adams of Summerville, Ga., Odell Burke of Signal Mountain, Tenn., and Eileen (Russell) Bonds of Signal Mountain; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11th at Hamilton Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Garden of Everlasting Life.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 3-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10th and on Wednesday from noon until the time of the service at the North chapel.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Chattanooga caregivers, her loving sister Eileen for her care and support, and the inspiration of Deacon Brian Gabor of St. Jude.

John Edge

John Clifford Edge, 62, of East Ridge, passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009.

John was born in Chattanooga to John and Louise Edge. He attended Central High School where he excelled in sports and was a leader on the football field and a friend to many. Never one to accept the ordinary, John lived an adventurous life, living in many different states and experiencing the beauty of America. He was recently compelled to return to Chattanooga to be close to his young grandson, who was the light of his life.

John was a strong spirit who lived life according to his own terms. He was surrounded by his large and adoring family who is grieving his passing. John was an avid fan of Tennessee Vols Football and enjoyed watching games with his son and friends. John was an All City Football player from Central High School and state wrestling champ at University of Tennessee.

John was preceded in death by his parents John and Louise Edge.

He is survived by his son, John Nicholas (Jenni) Edge; daughter, Heather Carmen (Mark) Frazer; grandson Roman Edge Frazer; former wife, Pat Horton Edge Jarvis; sisters, Charlotte (Jay) Paty, Dee (Mickey) Hawkins. Priscilla (Sam) Thal and Brenda Edge Binkley; and former father-in-law, William W. (Bill) Horton.

A Celebration of Life Ceremony is planned for Tuesday Nov. 10, 2009.

Cecil Ford

Cecil R. Ford, 88, of Chattanooga passed away Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, in a local hospital.

He was an active member of Lookout Valley Presbyterian Church. Mr. Ford was a veteran of the WWII in an aviation ordinance attached to the 9th Air Force. He was retired from U.S. Pipe and Foundry.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Artice Hendricks Ford; and a sister, Joyce Peters.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews and many precious friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road with the Rev. Grady Davidson officiating.

Burial will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. today and from 10-11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Letha Foshee

Letha Nell Tussey Foshee, 83, of East Ridge, was called home to heaven Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009.

She was a native of Jackson County, Ky., and had settled her family in the East Ridge area. She was of the Church of Christ faith, was a successful beautician of Letha's Beauty Shop for more than 45 years and was a prominent member of her society. She also enjoyed gardening and cooking.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and six brothers.

Survivors include four daughters, Susan White of Chattanooga, Debbie Moore of

Ringgold, Ga., Salli High of Menlo, Ga., and Jill Foshee Davis of Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Kelly, Amy, Todd, Chelsea, Sydney, Shari, Blair, Kayla, Caleb and Brandon Addison; and several nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held at a later date.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Johnetta Moore

Johnetta Moore, 76, departed this life on Monday, Nov. 2, 2009 at her home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Booker Terry and Ana Hughes; daughter, Loretta Moore; husband, James T. Moore; and nine of her siblings.

She leaves to cherish her memories daughter, Cassie Wise, of Huntsville, Ala.; granddaughters, Latinia and Lakisha Terry, Chattanooga; Rochelle Wise, Florida; grandsons, Horace Moore, Antonio Wise, Birmingham, Ala., Jermaine Wise, Knoxville; host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.

Louise OíBrien

Louise E. “Weezie” O’Brien, of Hixson, died Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at Memorial North Park Hospital.

Louise was born July 25, 1940 in Passaic, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Irene Louise Meyer and William Conlin Meyer. She married Richard St. Lawrence O’Brien on July 9, 1960.

She was a graduate of Rutherford (N.J.) High School and Laselle College, Auburndale Mass. Louise operated a day care in her home on Signal Mountain for over 20 years and touched many lives.

She was a member of the Saint Augustine Church Parish, Ladies of Charity, Welfare Council, Soup Kitchen, and several other local charities while living on Signal Mountain. After moving to Hixson in 2004, she became very active in her neighborhood of wonderful friends.

She is survived by her two daughters, Professor Susan Mary O’Brien, of Eau Claire, Wis., and Patricia Mary O’Brien Ragan, of Hixson; her sister, Patricia Heublein; and three grandchildren Robert H. Ragan, Rachael Elizabeth Ragan and Cameron Richard Ragan.

A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009 at 4 p.m. at Saint Augustine Catholic Church with a reception and visitation to follow. St Augustine Church is located on at 1716 Anderson Pike, Signal Mountain, (423)886-3424.

John Patrick “Papa Jack” Reddan, 71, of Chattanooga died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, while making his yard even more beautiful.

He was born Oct. 4, 1938.

Tina A. Thompson, 98, of Chattanooga passed away Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009.

She had been a member of Highland Park Baptist Church for 69 years and was a member of Railroad Employees Ladies Auxiliary.

Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her husband, John N. Thompson; her son, Scottie Thompson; and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include one daughter, Charlotte Nell Scholtz of Chattanooga; one son, Henry Thompson of Chattanooga; five grandchildren, Karen (Steve) Pope, Greg Thompson, Sherry Thompson, Johnny Thompson and Mike Munson; one great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

Mary Tucker

Mary Alberta Tucker she walked through the open door into the everlasting arms of God on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009.

She was born to the union of the late William McKinley and Sallie Posley on June 7, 1924. She retired from Orange Grove Center. After retirement she went to work at Volunteer Community School until 2007.

She became a member of Thankful Baptist Church at an early age. She was a member of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her spouse, Rev. Leon Tucker;

and son George Tucker; sisters, Lena Robinson, Evelyn Perrin and Mable Ratliff; brothers, James Posley, Sylvester Posley, McKinley Posley and Eugene Posley.

Stacey Wilson

Stacey B. Wilson, 90, of Chattanooga passed away on Friday, Nov. 6, 2009.

Mrs. Wilson was born and raised in Olive, Okla. She lived most of her life in Grayville, Ill. She has spent her retirement years residing in Chattanooga. She was the youngest of seven children.

Mrs. Wilson’s greatest passion of her life was the study of God’s word. She was of the Baptist faith and deeply involved in mission work. Jesus became her Lord and Savior in Oklahoma and she deepened her faith at the First Baptist Church of Grayville. She recently served the Lord at Crossroads Church of Chattanooga.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Wilson; as well as five of her brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her sister, Cordia Francis of Illinois; two children, Gary W. Wilson and his wife Suzanne Wilson; Sharon R. Belva and her husband Louis W. Belva; five grandchildren, Rachel Houghton and spouse Scott Houghton, Louis Belva III and spouse Kasey Belva, Stuart Belva and spouse Elysia Belva, Wade Wilson and Brad Wilson and spouse Giselle Wilson; she was overjoyed to have six great-grandchildren, Maddox Houghton, Adrianna Wilson, Bryce Houghton, William Belva, Myles Belva and Natalie Belva; and several nieces and nephews

He was an employee of AAA Cooper Transportation of Chattanooga.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lemey Edgar Saylors Sr., and Annie Irene Belk Saylors; and his brother, Arthur L. “Cush” Saylors.

WHITWELL — Marvin Edward Wagoner, 83, passed away, Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, at his home.

He retired from Ford Stamping Plant in Chicago Heights, Ill., after 26 years and managed Town Creek Apartments 1 and 2 from 1983 to 1995. He was of the Methodist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ethel Hopkins Wagoner; and brothers, Raymond, Lynn and John “Pete” Wagoner.

Mr. Wagoner is survived by his wife of 60 years, Alice Cunningham Wagoner; sons, Billy J. and Edward D. Wagoner of Whitwell, and Dannie W. Wagoner, of East Ridge, Tenn.; brothers, Charlie Wagoner, of Hillsboro, Tenn., and Jack Wagoner, Estill Springs, Tenn.; sister, Geneva Sullenger, Mulberry, Tenn.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

VILLA RICA — S. Harris Caldwell Jr., passed away Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009.

Funeral services will be today, Nov. 9, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. at Summerville First United Methodist Church.

Interment in Summerville Cemetery.

Samuel James

ROSSVILLE — Samuel “Sammy” James, 53, passed away Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009.

A native and lifelong resident of Chattanooga and North Georgia, Sammy was a 1974 graduate of East Ridge High School and attended Chattanooga State. Along with his wife, Vikki, they were owners and operators of Super Tan USA in the Chattanooga area for 21 years and he was the creator of Black Sun high-performance tanning lamps.

He was employed with Modern Woodmen of America as an agent for many years, was past-president of the Rossville Exchange Club, and was a member of South Seminole Baptist Church and the Doberman Pincher Club.

Sammy was loved by all that knew him and will be missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank James and Laura James Ford.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Victoria “Vikki” Wells James; sisters, Sue Moore of Red Bank, and Carolyn Jenkins of Chattanooga; five nephews, two nieces and a host of friends are left to cherish his memory.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at noon in the South Crest Chapel with the Rev. Calvin Wigley officiating.

Burial will follow in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Sylvania, Ala., with Mark Kernea, Jack Shotts Jr., Anthony Holland, Christopher “Lex” Tantihacha, Trey Jones, and Kevin Terrette serving as pallbearers.

CHATSWORTH — Brenda Sue Slaughter, 59, died Friday, Nov. 6, 2009.

Surviving are her husband, Jim Slaughter; sons, Steve (Roberta) Pressley of Harriman, Tenn., and Danny Pressley of Dalton, Ga.; daughters, Yvette (Brent) Morgan and Diana (Jeff) Millsaps, Chattanooga; eight brothers and sisters; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home in Chattanooga. The Rev. Ricky Clark will officiate.

Interment will follow in Harrison Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home 2-8 p.m. today.

ROSSVILLE — Robert Wahlers, 70, passed away Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009 in a local hospital.

Private burial will be held in the Chattanooga National Cemetery.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

GAYLESVILLE — Edgar “Homebrew” Williams, 75, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at Riverview Medical.

Mr. Williams was retired from Storey Trucking.

Survivors include companion, Maudie Hartline, Gaylesville; sons and daughters-in-law, Fred and Deanna Williams, Doug and Beverly Williams, Pisgah; step-daughters, Debra (Tracy) Bowman , Dunlap, Patricia (Donnie) Hamond, Menlo, Barbara (Roy) Murphy, Gaylesville, Sherry Hartline, Summerville, Amanda Hartline, Rome; step-sons, Richard Woodall, Flat Rock, Joe Woodall and Ronnie Woodall, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Charles Hartline, Gaylesville, brothers, Joe Williams (Ruby J. Allen) Bridgeport, Kenneth (Doris) Williams, Alto, Ga.; sister, Betty Sue (Rob) Robinson, Galveston, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Monday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. CST at Corner Stone Funeral Chapel with Bro. Charles Williams officiating.

Visitation 11 a.m. until service time today.
