Four area players are among the 33 finalists for the TSSAA’s Mr. Football awards. Ooltewah defensive end Jacques Smith is again a finalist for the Class AAA Lineman of the Year award, while Baylor junior Jacob Huesman is a finalist for Division II-AA Back of the Year. South Pittsburg’s Terrell Robinson is a finalist for Class A Back of the Year and teammate Jiajuan Fennell is a finalist for Lineman of the Year.
There are three finalists for both Back and Lineman of the Year in three public school and two private school classifications as well as an overall Kicker of the Year award. The Mr. Football awards are selected by a combination of state-wide votes by coaches and a panel of sports writers. The award winners will be announced at a banquet at the Embassy Suites Hotel & Conference Center in Murfreesboro Nov. 30.
Smith won the award last year in the state’s largest classficiation. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound University of Tennessee commitment now has a chance to join former Red Bank running back Gerald Riggs and former Notre Dame receiver Adarius Bowman as the only local players to win the award in consecutive years.
