Jackie Beavers II

Jackie Wayne Beavers II, 52, of Johnson City, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009.

A longtime resident of Chattanooga, he was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Joyce Beavers; grandparents, Charles and Mammie Smith; grandparents, James and Dolly Beavers; sister, Wanda Brown; niece, Joy Morelock.

Survivors are his daughter, Amy (Jason) Beavers Casteel, of South Pittsburg, Tenn.; son, Jacob Beavers, of Harrison; sisters, Debbie (Allen) Smith, of Harrison, Holly (Nolan) Henrich, of Ooltewah; two grandchildren, Spencer and Emily Casteel, of South Pittsburg; special aunt and uncle, Margie and Maurice Beavers, of Hixson; special niece, Jessica Smith; several nieces and nephews.

William Burnette

William Russell Burnette, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, from a local hospital.

He was of the Baptist faith and served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Funeral services will be held today, Nov. 12, 2009, at 12:30 p.m. in the Highway 58 chapel of Turner Funeral Home with Minister Philip Henderson officiating.

Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.

The family will receive friends today up to the hour of service at the funeral home.

Fredwick “Jerk” “Quick” Cross, 61, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, in a local hospital.

Antonio Green

Antonio L. Green departed this life Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009.

He was born June 26, 1981 in Chattanooga.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Attiyah Green; paternal grandfather, Homer Green; and his maternal grandmother, Willena Williams.

He leaves to cherish his memories a son, Jaden Green; daughter, Tanea Green; parents, Gerald Green and Arlene Williams; brother, Gerald Green, Jr.; sister, Emerald Stegall; five aunts; 11 uncles; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; a devoted cousin, Ebony; other relatives and friends.

Services will be held on Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at 1 p.m. at John P. Franklin Funeral Home with Pastor Seth Yelorda, officiating.

William G. “Bill” Hales, 83, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith W. Jones officiating.

Robert Hamill

Robert W. “RW” “Ike” Hamill, of Hixson, a WWII Veteran passed from this life into the next on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, at the age of 81.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, on March 26, 2005.

RW was a descendent of the original Hamill family in the Hixson community.

Born and raised in Hixson, he entered this world on May 13, 1928, to Ephriam James Hamill and Rosa Hill Hamill. RW’s brothers and sisters are Ephriam James “EJ” Hamill Jr., Cleo Hamill Poe, James Samuel Hamill and Nellie Jean Hamill.

RW attended and graduated from Hixson High School and entered the Navy as a young man, serving in both the South Pacific theater and Okinawa, Japan, during World War II. After his tour of duty in the Navy, he returned to his hometown of Hixson and married Dorothy Marie Raulston James. They raised four children, Robert Wayne Hamill Sr., Danny Ray Hamill, Rosie Marie Hamill Brown and Debbie Renee Hamill Hindman.

He was employed by Lewis Benton at the Hixson Packing Co. on Mill Road for 40 years.

He was blessed with eight grandchildren, Annette, Bobby, Christina, Jessica, David, Sandy, Amber, Tommy and Kim. He had nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13, 2009 in the Legacy Funeral Home chapel with Brother Willard Johnson officiating.

Interment will follow in Hamilton County Memorial Park.

Kenneth Wesley Howard, 78, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Howard was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Dorothy Patterson

Dorothy R. Patterson, 93, of Soddy-Daisy, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at a local hospital.

She was of the Church of God Faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Patterson; parents, Rev. Bruce and Laura Redden; sisters, Nellie Redden, Mary Lewis; brother, Ralph Redden.

She is survived by her nephews, Tommy Lewis, Leland Redden; nieces, Dorothy Redden, Laura Warren.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Chancey Cemetery with the Rev. Grant Chauncey officiating.

Frances LeVisa Price 84, of Chattanooga, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, in a local health care facility.

Mrs. Price was a member of Maple Grove Baptist Church and the Ruth Sunday School Class. She retired from J.C. Penney and was preceded in death by her husband, Charles B. Price Sr.

Survivors include her daughter, Jeanine Bush, Harrison; son, Charles B. Price Jr., Fort Oglethorpe; three sisters, Kathleen Reilly, Bartlett, Tenn., Elizabeth Ivey, Milledgeville, Ga., Virginia Collins, Oak Ridge, Tenn.; granddaughter, Kelli Bush, Harrison; several nieces and nephews.

Ava Lee Standifer, 95, of Chattanooga passed away Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009.

Julia Tyer

Julia McAllister Tyer, a life-long resident of Chattanooga, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009. She was 96 years old.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, David Henry Tyer; sisters Ruth McAllister and Virginia McAllister Rowland; brother, Dan McAllister; and by her parents, Edgar and Ora McAllister. She was born in New Albany, Miss., in 1913. She graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Memphis in 1935. She was a member of Brainerd United Methodist Church for many years. She also served as a volunteer at Siskin Rehabilitation Hospital.

Survivors include her children Kay (Jim) Hartung, Ann (Lew) Waddey and David (Amelia) Tyer; grandchildren, Karen Hartung Rodell, Julie Swafford Blackwell, Chrissie Swafford Fisher, David Michael Hartung, Scott Parker Swafford, James Deakins Hartung, and David McAllister Tyer. There are 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Her sister-in-law and brother-in-law are Mr. and Mrs. Lester Sergent. Nephews include Stephen Young, Robert Sergent and James Stephen Brown. She was affectionately known as Oma by most of the children regardless of age.

She will be remembered for a generosity of spirit that allowed many friends to become special, valued lifelong members of this family. She was a wonderful mother, extraordinary friend, and exceptional example of a life well lived and enjoyed.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 10 a.m. to noon today, Nov. 12, at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on South Terrace and Moore Road. The visitation will be followed by a 1 p.m. graveside service with Rev. Genevieve DeHoog as officiant.

The service will take place at Hamilton Memorial Gardens, Highway 153 in the Nativity Garden.

Gratitude is sent to the Hospice of Chattanooga caregivers and to a special friend, Mary Anne Hubbard.

Sarah Frances Lawman Wells, of Lookout Mountain, went to heaven from her home on the mountain on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009.

Theodore Williams

Theodore “Ted” Williams, 62, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Nov. 9, 2009.

Ted attended Howard High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He also retired from National Cemetery after 26 years of service. He was a loyal maintenance man for Alexian Court Retirement Apartments.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Sophronia Williams; daughter-in-law, Lakisa Williams; granddaughters, Kyleya and Kierra Williams; brother, James H. Murphy.

He leaves to cherish his memory one daughter, Tadzia (Kevin) Williams, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; sons, Karl Williams, Chattanooga, and Thadus (Roxanna) Williams, Indianapolis, Ind.; sisters, Annette Beamon and Willena Smith; brothers, Eddie (Norma) Williams, Clyde and Charles (Gloria) Williams; five grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at Reuben Strickland Memorial Chapel.

TENNESSEE

Grady Gallant Jr.

NASHVILLE — T. Grady Gallant Jr., a prominent journalist, editor, columnist, author and photographer died on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, at his home in Nashville, on the 234th birthday of the United States Marine Corps.

Gallant attended Emory University. Mr. Gallant died of natural causes at his Nashville home. He served as a Sergeant of Special Weapons in the U.S. 1st marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, 1941-1945, in the assault at Guadalcanal and served a second tour with the 4th marine Division, Fleet Marine Force and was in the assault and Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. He was born June 14, 1920 to Thomas Grady Gallant Sr. and Louise Ralls Gallant in Gadsden, Ala. and raised in Sanford, Fla.

Mr. Gallant journalism career began as editor of the Cleveland, Tenn. Daily Banner, 1947-1948, then as a reporter and columnist for the Chattanooga News/Free Press and Chattanooga Times, 1948-1963; columnist/city editor for the Chattanooga Post, 1966-1970; city editor of the Raleigh News and Observer, 1971; and political reporter/columnist for the Nashville Banner, 1971-1974 and served as the information officer for Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury William Snodgrass. He served as publicity director for the Cherokee, N.C. Historical Association from 1959-1961 and was a member of the museum Advisory Panel for the Tennessee Arts Commission in 1974.

During Mr. Gallant’s Journalism career Associated Press published numerous photographs and articles he had written and taken of national stories such as the Little Rock, Ark., desegregation riots, U.S. Space program, U.S. Supreme Court cases and was published extensively on state and national political campaigns from Prentice Cooper, Presidential campaigns of John Kennedy, Richard Nixon and George Wallace. Mr. Gallant covered a wide array of topics from murder trials, medical breakthroughs as well as interviews with national scientific figures like Werner Von Braun.

Mr. Gallant was the author of “On Valor’s Side”, about Marines prior to World War II and the Battle of Guadalcanal, and “The Friendly Dead”, about Marines on the Iwo Jima battlefield. His books were favorably reviewed by the New York Times. He was published by Doubleday, Les Presses de la Cite, Paris France and in paperback by Modern Library, Avon, Zebra and Popular Library. Chapters of his books are in the anthology “United States Marines in World War II”. His work is quoted extensively in “The War Within War” by Gerald F. Linderman, and in a number of books by military historians. He has been listed in “Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Contemporary Authors, vol. 5-6” and “The Writers Directory, 1974-1976.” He was a member of St. George Episcopal Church.

Mr. Gallant is survived by his wife, Micheal Ann; his three children, Lacy Campbell-Orde, of Fairview, Tenn., Thomas G. Gallant III, of Signal Mountain, and C. Scott R. Gallant, of Portland, Ore; and, 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held today, Nov. 12, from 6-7 p.m. CST at Nashville Marshall Donnelly Combs Funeral Home and a family service will be held Saturday, Nov 14, at 2 p.m. CST at Forrest Cemetery in Gadsden, Ala.

George Lewis

JASPER — George W. Lewis, 75, a longtime resident of Marion County passed away, Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, in a local hospital after a long and trying illness.

He was a graduate of Marion County High School and a retiree of the United States Army where he received many medals and awards for services rendered for this country for a 30 year period.

He was preceded in death by is parents, four brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by his longtime companion and wife, Sonja; one son, George E. Lewis; and two sisters, Maggie Brown, of Sequatchie, Tenn. and Shirley Warren, of Rossville; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted from the funeral home chapel, at 11 a.m. CST Friday, Nov. 13, 2009.

Interment with full military honors will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery at 12:30 p.m.

Robert Maupin

CLEVELAND — Robert D. “Coach” Maupin, 65, passed away suddenly Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, in a local hospital.

He was a member of First Baptist Church where he was an usher and he was the coordinator of the van ministry for the church. He was a coach at Bradley High School for the past 41 years. He worked as an assistant at Grissom Funeral Home for the past 17 years. Robert was an active member of the Noonday Lions Club. He was inducted in the Bradley County Old Timers Hall of Fame in 2007 and in 2008 he was inducted in the Bradley Central High School Basketball Hall of Fame. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His testimony of kindness and love will live in for years to come in the hearts of many.

He was preceded in death by his parents, H. T. Maupin Jr. and Johnnie Dykes Maupin.

He is survived by one brother, and sister-in-law, Mark and Gay Maupin, Signal Mountain; one sister, Jo Terry Evans, Cleveland, Tenn.; one aunt, Dorothy Shellabarger, Signal Mountain; three nieces, Jennifer Powell and family of Chattanooga, Amy Maupin, Signal Mountain, and Terri Evans, Cleveland; two nephews, Chuck Evans and Josh Evans, Cleveland and one great-nephew, Henry Jordan, Cleveland; very special friends, Turner and Liz Jackson, Dale Hughes, David Goins, Mark Grissom and Steve Gibson. A host of friends also survive.

A Celebration of the Life of “Coach” Maupin will be held today, Nov. 12, 2009, at 8 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Pastors Allan Lockerman and Jim Gibson officiating.

Interment will be held Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at 1 p.m. CST at Collier Cemetery in Bledsoe County, Tenn., with the Coaching Staff of Bradley High School serving as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Cleveland Noonday Lions Club.

JASPER — David Larry Nelson, 64, formerly of Jasper, TN died of natural causes in Atmore, Ala., on Monday, Nov. 2, 2009.

Son of the late Luther and Alice Nelson, he is survived by siblings, James (Beth) F. Nelson, of Chattanooga, Lawrence (Shirley) Nelson, of Bowden, Ga., and Carolyn (Bo) Bohanon, of Alexandria, Ala.

Irene Alverson

LAKEVIEW — Irene Tucker Alverson, 97, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, at her residence.

She had been a resident of Lakeview for 80 years. Mrs. Alverson was a member of Newnan Springs United Methodist Church. She had been a nurse for 50 years beginning at Tri-County Hospital when it first opened and retiring from Campbell’s Clinic. Mrs. Alverson was a member of the Pocahontas Chapter Order of the Easter Star 165.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Wheeler Alverson Sr.

Survivors are sons, Dewey Wheeler (Joyce) Alverson, Gainesville, Ga., Gary L. (Lois Ann) Alverson, Ringgold, G. ROSSVILLE — Winnie Campbell, 83, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009.

She was of the Church of God faith and was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley Campbell.

Survivors include her children, Shirley Sheffield, Crossville, Patsy Woolridge, Kentucky, Kathy Grey and Charlene Brown, Sparta, Tenn., Darlene Derryberry, Rossville, Tim Campbell, Crossville; sister, Theodora Halstongaurd, Arizona; brother, Odis McMurphy, Chattanooga; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, half sisters, nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel with Pastor Gary Scott officiating.

William Fuson

FORT OGLETHORPE — William Harrold Fuson, 75, passed away Monday, Nov. 9, 2009.

He was born to the late Will and Alline Scott on June 28, 1934. He was a member of St. James Methodist Church, former owner/operator of Rite-Way Pest Control, former Mayor and City Councilman of Fort Oglethorpe, the former Commander of the Power Squadron, and an avid golfer.

He was also preceded in death by his son, William “Butch” Fuson.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Fuson, of Fort Oglethorpe; six children and spouses, Becky (Richard) Carter, of Texas, Sheree (Roy) Milsap, Danny Fuson, all of Chattanooga, Michael (Pam) Fuson, of Spring City, Sheri-Lahn (Michael) Webster-Mount, of Ringgold, and Alan Webster, of Fort Oglethorpe; sister, Doris (Dale) White, of LaFayette; cousin, Fred (Thero) Fuson, of Ooltewah; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be private.

RINGGOLD — William Elbert Richmond, 81, formerly of the Deep Springs Community, passed away Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, at his residence.

He was the son of the late W. H. and Maude Hackney Richmond and was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances Smith Richmond; and daughter, Sharon Richmond Stiers.

He was a member of Happy Home Baptist, retired from Mueller Foundry, and preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Perry Suttle Jr. and Elzora Young Suttle; his wife, Mary Ruth Echols Suttles, five brothers, and one sister.

Ruth Quinn

STEVENSON — Ruth Irene Brown Quinn, 93, formerly of Chattanooga, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at Highlands Medical Center in Scottsboro, Ala.

She had worked as LPN in Chattanooga hospitals and was a member of Ridgedale Baptist Church in Chattanooga.

Mrs. Quinn was preceded in death by her husband, Houston Eugene Quinn; and parents, Robert David and Nola Magdalene Guinn Brown.

She is survived by her brother, Frank Brown, of Stevenson; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. CST Friday, Nov. 13, at the funeral home chapel.

Interment will be at Stevenson City Cemetery.

Visitation will be today, 5-9 p.m. CST at Rudder Funeral Home in Stevenson.

BRYANT — Alan Dale Watson Sr., 47, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at his residence.

Alan was of the Baptist faith. He loved spending time with his family and collecting model cars.

He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Lee Watson; and brother, Roy Lynn Watson.

Victoria Broadwell

JAMESTOWN, N.C. — Victoria Lee Britt Broadwell passed away Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, at Wesley Long Hospital.

She was born May 13, 1959 in Pikeville, Tenn., to Johnny and Joanne Hancock Britt. Mrs. Broadwell graduated from Rhea County High School in 1977 in Evensville, Tenn. She attended Journeyman Church. Her husband, children and grandchildren were her life’s treasure and providing a loving home for them was her joy. She enjoyed gardening, reading and was a great organizer and host of family reunions (PARTIES!). She was a woman with a generous heart and could often be found assisting at her daughter’s school with special needs children, helping with Special Olympics and serving the less fortunate at a moment’s notice.

She is survived by her husband of 17 years, Gerry Lee Broadwell; sons, Emmett (Julia) Snellen, of Harrodsburg, Ky., Tyler Broadwell, of Texas, and Josh and Michael Broadwell of the home; daughters, Tiffany (J.J.) McDowell, of Archdale and Mallory Snellen, of the home; father, Johnny (Wilma Jo) Britt, of Panama City, Fla.; brothers, Andy (Annie) Britt and Nathan Britt; sisters, Rhonda Dame, Debi (Norman) Settles and Linda Britt, all of the Chattanooga area; grandchildren, Zoe, Kaylee and Anika McDowell and Blaine and Ayden Snellen; and several nieces and nephews and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her mother in 2001.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, with Pastor Keith Hall officiating with interment to follow in Guilford Memorial Park.

James Byrne Sr.

BLOOMFIELD, Conn.— James E. Byrne Sr., 85, passed away Sunday morning, Nov. 8, 2009.

Jim was born on Oct. 27, 1924 in Chattanooga, son of the late Bernard Patrick and Alpha May Broome Byrne. After the death of his parents, he and his late brother, Bernard Patrick, lived with their Uncle Charles and Aunt Marie Chumley.

He graduated from Notre Dame High School and attended Kirkman Business College in Chattanooga. James was employed at Combustion Engineering Co. in Chattanooga, and was transferred to New York City in 1956 where Combustion installed the first 650 computer. From New York, he went on to New Jersey and finally in 1960 Combustion moved the computer center to Windsor, where he retired in July, 1985 after 42 years.

Jim was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Bloomfield and became involved in the committee for building the present Sacred Heart Church. Jim was a member and past president of the Serra Club of Hartford, past president of Sacred Heart Home School Association and past Chairman of the Parish Council. He was a member of the Finance Committee, Trustee of Sacred Heart and worked with CYO after arriving in Bloomfield.

Jim also coached Little League Baseball in Bloomfield for 13 years. He chaired the food booth at the Sacred Heart carnival for many years and chaired the Retired Priest Luncheon held at Saint Thomas Seminary every year. He was a Eucharist Minister and recipient of the Saint Joseph Medal at the Cathedral. Jim was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus and was in the 117th Infantry of the 30th Division in World War II, where he received the Bronze Star for bravery. He was discharged from the Army in 1945.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine of 59 years; and their four children, James E. Byrne Jr. and his wife, Janet, of Chattanooga, Josephine Quintana and her husband Matthew, of West Simsbury, Mary Patricia Byrne, of Brandon, Fla. and John Francis Byrne, of Bloomfield. He also leaves his four grandchildren, Matthew Ryan and Brendan James Quintana, Hannah Maureen Byrne and Natasha Patricia Trudell.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, 10 a.m., at Sacred Heart Church, 26 Wintonbury Ave., Bloomfield.

Burial, with Military Honors, will be in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield.

His family will receive friends on Friday, 4-8 p.m. at the church.

Ronald Hair

FRISCO, Texas — Ronald A. Hair, 77, died Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at the Medical Center of Plano, in Plano, Texas.

Born Nov. 13, 1931, in Soddy, Tenn., Mr. Hair attended the Army Language School at the Presidio of Monterey, Calif., and served with the U.S. Air Force’s 15th Radio Squadron Mobile in the Korean War. After graduating from the University of Tennessee/Knoxville, Mr. Hair joined Westinghouse Electric Corporation where he enjoyed a distinguished 33-year career.

Mr. Hair is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sara Holliday Hair, of Frisco; a daughter, Susan Johnson, of Allen, Texas; a son, Arthur R. Hair, of Westlake Village, Calif.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald A. Hair Jr.; his parents, Archie and Eunice Hair; and one sister, Brenda K. Driver.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association Memorials, 12750 Merit Drive, Suite 1220, Dallas, TX 75251.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at Turrentine, Jackson & Morrow in Frisco.
