Sarah Wells
Sarah Frances Lawman Wells, 90, departed into His Light on the wings of Angels from her home on Lookout Mountain, Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009.
She was the daughter of well known businessman, Edgar Huell Lawman and Sarah Frances Thomas Lawman of Lookout Mountain. She was the granddaughter of David Thomas of Chattanooga.
Sally Wells, as she was affectionately known to family and friends, was an honor student at Brights School, GPS and Arlington Hall College in Virginia, where she became an expert equestrian.
In 1942 she married the late Alexander Wells and waited patiently and prayerfully at home with her parents on the mountain for three years until he returned safely from WW II. Lt. Commander Wells was a highly decorated PT Boat skipper in the South Pacific --- from Guadalcanal to the Leyte Gulf, when he escorted Gen. Douglas MacArthur on PT Boat 525 on his triumphant return to the Philippines, Oct. 24, 1944. He was later general counsel for Interstate Life and Accident Co. of Chattanooga and Gulf Life in Jacksonville, Fla.
Before she was born, her father, Ed Lawman Sr., a WWI cavalry officer stationed at Fort Ogelthorpe, rode with Gen. “Black Jack” Pershing during the Mexican campaign in 1916 against Poncho Villa. In 1943 he was selected as executive director of the Benwood Foundation and served until his retirement.
From 1941 to 1965 Sally Wells was a member of the Chattanooga Junior League and supported the arts and several area charities as a civic and community leader.
During the school year of 1960-61, Sally Wells was honored by McCallie School as the Grayson Medal sponsor for her son Alex. Later, she was a Mid-South Wrestling Champion sponsor for her late son, Lawman.
In 1965 she wrote a delightful autobiographical book, “Horses in Your Own Backyard,” about her family owning, training, and riding ponies and horses together. Throughout the 1950s the Wells family was active in the Dogwood Foxhunt and Polo Club, headquartered at Summerfield Johnston’s Bendabout Farm north of Chattanooga.
In her early teens young Sally became an accomplished musical artist as a songwriter, singer, and pianist. In the 1970s under pseudonym “Samantha” Lawman, she produced an LP album (Ebb Tide by the Sea), of her original songs and ballads with the personal assistance of her longtime friend and confidant, the late William L. Montague Jr.
As she entered the final years of her divinely inspired twilight, Samantha, as she was endearingly called by many, enthusiastically joined her son Alex, his wife Mary ‘T’ and their partner Ron Miller, along with many other Vietnam Veterans across this nation. ... to follow a dream — healing the wounds of the Vietnam War on all sides — bringing former enemies face-to-face in peace on their old battlefields inside Vietnam.
Samantha accepted the honorary title of chairman emeritus as a charter member of the original Vietnam Reconciliation Project, which recently evolved into a nonprofit humanitarian organization: American Vietnamese Reconciliation Project Inc. (AVRP). The ultimate goal of this group is to build and operate the International Veterans Friendship/Reconciliation Center on the Perfume River near the Hue Citadel in Central Vietnam. Her son, Alex, a Marine artillery captain and Purple Heart survivor of the 1968 TET Offensive, fought inside the Citadel with allied ARVN airborne Marines, surrounded for 14 days by enemy NVA forces.
She is survived by her son Alex, brother Ed Lawman Jr.; grandson, Nelson Wells; granddaughter, Lee Wells Whittington; and great-granddaughter, Parker Wells Whittington. Her precious caregivers, Shiela and Eric Hall, were family to Samantha, blessing and enhancing her life for 15 years.
One of her last wishes was that any memorial contributions be made to: AVRP Inc., in care of Colonel Ron Miller, 3500 Bolt Blvd., Jonesboro, AR 72401. Personal messages may be sent to the family by e-mail: ronxmiller@sbcglobal.net.
A Celebration of Samantha’s wonderful life ceremony with extended family and friends will be announced at a later date by Wann Funeral Home in St. Elmo at the base of her beloved mountain.
