Lady Cougars finish sweep, improve to 5-0

Christian Page scored 16 points and freshmen Mariah Lawrence and Takeya Day added 13 and 12 as Cleveland State won 72-70 in TCCAA women's basketball Saturday at Southwest Tennessee.

Day's 10th steal of the game sealed the victory with six seconds to go for the Lady Cougars, who rose to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the league after winning another tough one Friday night at Dyersburg State.

"It was close the whole way," Cleveland State coach Dan Lumpkin said. "This was a tough trip to go on and get a sweep, and we feel great about it."

Kierra Johnson had 11 rebounds for the Lady Cougars. Kianna James had 24 points and 15 rebounds for the Lady Saluqis.

The Cleveland State men completed the doubleheader sweep by winning 101-98 in overtime, and Chattanooga State swept at Dyersburg, 67-62 in the women's game and 103-83 in the men's.

The Cougars thought they won in regulation Friday at Dyersburg, but a point was taken off the scoreboard and they went to overtime and lost 105-104. Devin Boyd had 32 points in that game and Justin Garner and Willie Smith added 21 and 18. J'Quan Martin had 24 points and 10 rebounds Saturday, when Smith and Jesse Taylor scored 20 points each and Smith also grabbed 10 rebounds. Tony Bates had 12 rebounds and five assists with 12 points.

P.J. Meyers had 29 points and five assists as Chattanooga State's Tigers went to 2-0, while Roy McFadgon had 20 points and nine rebounds, Alex Wells and B.J. Frazier scored 13 and 12 points and Philip Jurick had 11 rebounds and nine blocked shots. For the Lady Tigers (1-2), Beneidra Colbert scored 20 points and Hannah Powers had 16, with two 3-pointers keying a crucial run, and Jaqualia Wynn and Chasity Welch had seven rebounds apiece.

* Shawnee State (w) 73, Lee 70: At Georgetown, Ky., the Lady Flames fell in overtime to the undefeated Ohio team after losing a 19-point first-half lead. Katie Nelson had 21 points and nine rebounds, Brooke McKinnon scored 17 points and Allison Rader had 15 points and six assists for Lee, which was 12-of-35 on 3-point tries.

* Bryan 66, Tennessee Temple 64 (OT): At Temple, the Lions improved to 4-1, but Bryan's women (5-2) followed a 65-47 loss Friday at Trevecca Nazarene with a 70-53 loss to Cumberland.

* Gardner-Webb 89, Covenant 48 (exhib.): Sam Bowman scored 10 points and Davis Eldridge had eight for Covenant, while Paul Werkema grabbed five offensive rebounds against the NCAA Division I team.

* Georgia Northwestern 94, West Georgia 83: At the Rossville Athletic Complex, the Mustangs won their Georgia technical college league opener despite 32 points by the visitors' Courtney Farris. Isaiah Tibbs and Kyle Wilson scored 23 and 20 for the Mustangs, and Bilal Weems and Perie Finley added 16 apiece.
