Lee's Christensens top SSAC players

Lee University senior forward Christiane Christensen, a first-team NAIA All-American last year, was voted Southern States Athletic Conference women's soccer player of the year for 2009, and her twin, Linn Christensen, was defensive player of the year. They were among seven first-team All-SSAC players for the second-ranked and defending NAIA national champion Lady Flames, who won the league tournament championship Saturday by tying Auburn-Montgomery 0-0 and advancing with a 3-1 edge in penalty kicks. Another set of Lee sisters, Jamie and Jenna Achten, also made first-team All-SSAC along with Marina Lima, Kim Conrad and freshman goalkeeper Leah Wilson from Chattanooga Christian. Claire Lanter and Kristine Tuck were second-team choices, and the Christensens, the Actens, Tuck, Kristen Carbine and Kelli Lawson were SSAC all-academic picks. Teammate Molly Hoeweler was the Champion of Character honoree. Wilson made nine saves in Saturday's game for the Lady Flames (16-2-1), and then she blocked three PKs while the Christensens and Conrad made theirs. Wilson was named tournament MVP.

* MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- For the second straight year, the Lee men's soccer team used a string of upsets to win the SSAC tournament and earn a spot in the NAIA tournament. After beating fourth-ranked Southern Polytechnic on Thursday, Henry Moyo's Flames edged No. 17 Auburn-Montgomery 2-1 on Saturday. Senior Chris Hennessey scored the deciding goal off a free kick with 55 seconds left in regulation time and was named tournament MVP. AUM (13-4-2) took a lead with an own goal in the 49th minute, but the Flames (9-8-3) equalized three minutes later when Curtis Alcide capitalized on a goalkeeper mistake.

* BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Bryan College won the Appalachian Athletic Conference men's soccer tournament championship with its second overtime win in as many days Saturday, 2-1 over Montreat. Bennie Bardales scored in the 65th minute for Bryan (11-6) and assisted on Tom Hemmings' winning goal in the 98th minute. Montreat scored three minutes after Reggie Parks assisted on Bardales' goal for Bryan, which had a 19-10 edge in shots and 7-2 dominance in shots on goal.

* BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- Top-seeded Union College edged Bryan 2-1 in the AAC women's soccer tournament final Saturday. Carli Milligan scored a tying goal for Bryan (8-8-2) in the 82nd minute, but Union (16-2-1) got the winner three minutes later. Kara Nissley had seven saves for the Lady Lions.

* Senior forward Luis Salazar from Dalton headed in his team-high 14th goal of the season to give the Berry men's soccer team a 1-0 lead just before halftime Friday in its season finale at Birmingham-Southern, and he made an over-the-shoulder flick assist for the final goal in the Vikings' 3-1 victory. That left them 12-2-4 for the season.
