John Abbott

John Edward Abbott, 58, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Nov. 13, 2009.

He was born in Chattanooga and lived in Red Bank all of his life. John was a 1969 graduate of Red Bank High School. He worked at BASF over 30 years.

John was preceded in death by his father, James Marvin Abbott Sr.

He is survived by his mother, Sarah Abbott; brothers, Jim (Jeanne) Abbott and Jerry (Carol) Abbott; and sister, Judy (Bill) Floyd.

The family from 10 to 11 a.m. today at the North Chapel.

Services for John will be held at 11 a.m. today at the North Chapel with the Rev. Terry Shannon officiating.

Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in John’s name to T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital.

Shelby Ackerman

Shelby Jean Coates Ackerman, 71, of Hixson, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009.

Shelby was born on March 22, 1938, in Marshall, N.C., and was a longtime resident of the Chattanooga area. She worked for the Department of the Navy in Washington, D.C., and then the Social Security Administration in Nashville and Cleveland, Tenn. She was a wonderful and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Shelby was a member of Central Church of Christ, the Ladies Class, wife of an elder and a devoted Christian.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Mary Ollie Reese Coates; brothers, James Hershel Coates and Claude Richard Coates; and half sisters, Arnon Dupree and Magdella Rhymer.

Shelby is survived by her husband of 50 years, John Ackerman; children, David and wife, Donna Ackerman, Pamela Raymond, Eddie and wife, Steffanie Ackerman, and Beth and husband, David Moss; grandchildren, Rachel, Sam and Stephen Ackerman, Chase and Hunter Raymond, Will Ackerman and Hayden, Haley, Holden and Hudson Moss; sisters, Helen Worley and husband Kenneth, Ruby Gambell Boone and husband, Johnny, and Wilma Hughes and husband, Jeff; brothers, E.J. Coates and wife, Genevieve, Ray Donald Coates and wife, Jane; and several nieces and nephews.

Services for Shelby will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Central Church of Christ, 400 Vine St., with Minister David Schonhoff officiating.

Burial will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the North Chapel and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Earline Campbell, 75, of East Ridge, passed away Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at her residence.

Cheril Edwards

Cheril Shelton Edwards, of Bryant, Ala., formerly of Hixson, passed away at her home Saturday, Nov. 19, 2009, with her family by her side.

Cheril was a founding member of Cannanland Baptist Church of Trenton, Ga., and served in many capacities. She was a graduate of Hixson High School and UTC.

She was previously employed by Provident Life and Accident, Dixie Group, and currently by Shelton Construction and Shelton Trucking.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Charlie and Eunice Smith and Irma Shelton Croft.

Surviving are husband, Kerry Edwards; daughter, Mary Lynn Edwards, both of Bryant; parents, Tom and Ina Shelton, of Graysville, Tenn.; sister, Terry (Phil) DeLay and children, Kristen and Jonathan, of Ringgold, Ga.; brother, Mitchell Shelton and son, Cody Shelton, of Hixson; grandfather, Kermit Croft, of Hixson; and several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. EST Tuesday in the chapel with the Rev. Darren Rogers and the Rev. Ron Moreland officiating.

Interment will be in Oaklawn Memorial Garden in Bryant, Ala.

Family will receive friends from 1 to 9 p.m. EST today at Ryan Funeral Home, Trenton, Georgia.

Leroy Hart Jr.

Leroy Hart Jr. passed away Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, in a local hospital.

He was previously employed with SCT Yarns.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Rose Hart.

Survivors include father, Leroy Hart Sr.; sisters, Grace Fields and Mary (Bobby) McDonald; brothers, John (Doris) Hart, Sammy (Dorothy) Hart, Thompson, Ga.; devoted friend, Fernader Nance; eight nieces; four nephews; several great-nieces and nephews; and a host of loving friends.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at Ruth Cofer Cemetery.

The body will lie in state after noon today at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.

Lillie Ingram, 93, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, in a local health care facility.

Donnie Jackson

Funeral services for Donnie Ray Jackson, 49, of Ooltewah, will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home.

Anne Jones

Anne P. Jones, 87, of Chattanooga died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at her home.

She was born Dec. 30, 1921, in Jackson, Tenn., to the late Gladys and John Pope Jr.

Her husband, Ed Jones, and one brother, Bill Pope, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her sons, Jim (Beth) Jones, of Chattanooga, Rick (Carol) Jones, of Knoxville; grandson, Tim Jones, of Houston, Texas; granddaughter, Dr. Jamie Jones, of Chicago; and brothers, John (Betty Ann) Pope III, of Tacoma, Wash., and Perry (Carolyn) Pope, of Jackson, Tenn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Gary Carver officiating.

Burial will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Bill Pope, Robert St. Clair, W.V. Roberson, Clark Williams, Steve Pope and Thomas Norton serving as pallbearers.

Tilda Thomas Oehmig died peacefully in her sleep Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, at her Lookout Mountain home. She was 83.

Mildred Price, 88, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009.

She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Survivors include nieces, Dewanda Taylor, Katherine Taylor, Mildred Taylor, Pamela Sternes, Weivshana Bailey and Carol Bailey; nephew, Glen T. Bailey; a special friend, Almeta Winston; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Randy Leonard Rice, 53, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at his residence.

Mary Lou Ricketts

Mary Lou Ricketts, 69, of East Ridge, passed away Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009.

She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and was of the Baptist faith.

She was previously employed Big Horn Saddle Co. as a seamstress.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Gertrude Cross; son, Gary Lee Ricketts; and daughter, Brenda Faye Ricketts.

Survivors include her husband of more than 55 years, William Ricketts, of East Ridge; three sons, James Ricketts Sr., of Ringgold, Ga., Jerry Ricketts and Roy Ricketts, both of East Ridge; three daughters, Connie Ricketts, Mary Duffey, both of East Ridge, and Helen Ricketts, of Chattanooga; three brothers, Ernest and Sonny Cross, both of Fort Oglethorpe, and Freddy Cross, of East Ridge; four sisters, Catherine Elliot, of Chattanooga, Sue Parker, of Ringgold, Ga., Allie Erwin, of Soddy-Daisy, and Betty Springfield, of Hixson; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South, with Brother Ken Bailey officiating.

Evelyn Robinson

Evelyn Bernice Robinson, 45, of Birchwood, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009.

She was predeceased by a brother, Monroe Smith; sister, Linda Bradley; and parents, Auston and Bulah Davis Watson.

She was a member of Old Fashion Gospel Tabernacle.

Survivors include her husband, Jackie Robinson; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lynn and Star Robinson and Brian and Mandy Robinson; two grandsons, Jasper Robinson and Ethan Robinson; four brothers, David Smith, Clifford Smith, Gene Rector and Hershel Watson; and several nieces and nephews.

The Rev. Dusty Watson will conduct the service at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the church.

Interment will be in Grasshopper Cemetery.

Anna Taylor

Anna “Tootsie” W. Hamilton Taylor, 78, of Hixson, passed away peacefully Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009.

Anna was born in Murphy, N.C., on Jan. 10, 1931. Tootsie grew up in Etowah, graduated from Etowah High School and attended East Tennessee State University. Anna was employed as a statistician at Moccasin Bend Hospital for over 20 years and later employed with Tennessee Unemployment Department. She was a longtime member of Northside Presbyterian Church. Anna volunteered with the Ronald McDonald House and was an avid photographer.

Anna was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Beth Hamilton, and her husbands, Luther Curtis Hamilton and Leon Taylor.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Janie Hamilton.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the North Chapel.

Patricia Wolfe

Patricia Ann Wolfe, 69, of Chattanooga, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, with her loving husband, Bernard Wolfe, at her side.

She was a native of Mobile, Ala., but considered Signal Mountain her home.

Patricia was an active member of Wayside Presbyterian Church.

Patricia, or “Mimi” as she was known by most, is survived by her husband of 51 years, Anthony Bernard Wolfe; as well as her daughter, Kim (Amir) Yekzaman, of Parkville, Mo.; sons, Tony (Gina) Wolfe, of Columbia, Tenn., and Robert (Charlene) Wolfe, of Signal Mountain; niece, Cynthia Hill, of Mobile; and brother Charles (Betty) Hill, of Tallahassee, Fla. She also leaves behind 13 grandchildren who love the Lord and who were the delight of her life and several nieces and nephews also survive.

The family would like to thank the staff at Memorial Hospital who so graciously supplied medical care and comfort, as well as a special acknowledgment to Dr. John L. Gwin Jr.

Ace Baker Jr.

KINGSTON — Ace Derrick Baker Jr., born May 15, 1923, in Chattanooga, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009.

He graduated from Baylor School in Chattanooga in 1942. He owned and operated Lakewood Marina on Watts Bar Lake for 28 years. During the early years at the marina, he built his own boats that he rented. He enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, carpentry and woodworking. He was a 32nd-degree Mason and a Shriner.

He joined Luminary United Methodist Church on Easter Sunday, April 18, 1965.

He belonged to First Families of Tennessee through his ancestor, James Baker, who settled in Tennessee about 1785.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ace Derrick Baker Sr. and Pearl Baker; brothers, Clyde and Lloyd Baker; and sisters, Ruby Haas and Betty Hitt.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Edith Roberts Baker; sons, Ace Derrick Baker III and Joseph Roberts Baker; and nephews and nieces.

Funeral is at 1 p.m. today, Nov. 16, 2009, in the Kyker Chapel with the Rev. Billy Kurtz officiating.

Burial will follow in the Luminary Cemetery.

Alton Lockhart Jr.

TRACY CITY — Alton Lockhart Jr., 71, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Alton Lockhart Sr. and Harriett Elizabeth Parker Lockhart; son, John Keith Lockhart; and brother-in-law, Homer “Cotton” Meeks.

Mr. Lockhart attended Mount Zion Baptist Church. He was a farmer, a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Col. Riley B. Roberts Camp.

Survivors are children, Andy (Wendy) Lockhart, Michael (Jan) Dykes, Judy (Terry) Winton, all of Tracy City, Melody Lockhart, Monteagle, and Lisa (Craig) Chisholm, Monroe, Mich.; sisters, JoAnn Meeks, Tracy City, and Mary Francis (George) Barnett, Portsmouth, Va.; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. CST Tuesday in the Foster & Lay Chapel with Brother Leland Frazier officiating.

Burial will be in Orange Hill Cemetery with military honors.

PALMER — Claude E. Whitman, 70, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at home surrounded by his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall and Lucille Green Whitman, and sister, Shirley Whitman Myers Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Whitman; daughter, Rhonda (Donald) Welch; son, Stephen (Regina) Whitman; sister, Carrie (Tom) Coffelt; brothers, Lonnie “Bud” (Sharon) Whitman and David Whitman; and grandchildren, Jessica and Daryl Welch, Camille and Zachary Whitman.

RINGGOLD — Virginia Florence Gordy Eaves, 63, departed this life Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009.

She was born in Ringgold to the late Ernest Deforest Gordy Sr. and Virgie (Brown) Gordy. She also was preceded in death by her siblings, Barbara Raye Gordy, Ernest Deforest Gordy Jr., William David Gordy; aunt, Johnnie Ruth Gordy; and uncle, Syrus Ellis “Jack” Gordy Sr.

Florence worked for Shaw Industries for over 20 years, and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her children, Gerald “Tojo” (Jackie) Eaves, Kenneth “Bebo” Eaves, Tammy Virginia (David) McInnis, Candi (John) Livingston, all of Ringgold; siblings, Wanda Crump, of Crandle, Ga., Walter Gordy, of Cohutta, Ga., James Gordy, Steve Gordy, Lot Gordy, all of Ringgold; 12 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, in the chapel with the Rev. Lillard Stringer, the Rev. Max Kessler and the Rev. Raymond Clark officiating.

Interment will follow in Gordy Cemetery.

TRION — Era Faye Logan, 81, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009.

Louise Spencer

ROCK SPRING — Louise Spencer, 98, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, in a local health care facility.

She had lived most of her life in the Rossville area and was a member of Lakeview First Baptist Church. Mrs. Spencer and her late husband had owned the Handy Way Market. She had been a gray lady at Hutcheson Medical Center.

Mrs. Spencer was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Edward Spencer; sisters, Mildred Thomas and Christine Woods; and brother, V.L. Ingle.

Searle, Florida; grandchildren, Leisa Haslerig, Rock Spring, René Dean, LaFayette, Ga., and Laurence Richardson, Ringgold, Ga.; great-grandchildren, David Haslerig, Clint Haslerig, Justin Haslerig, Brandie Smith, Amanda Dean, Ben Richardson; great-great-granddaughter, Aubrey Smith.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Dr. Leroy Spinks officiating.

Interment will be in Rock Spring Cemetery.

FLAT ROCK — Carolyn Ball, 67, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, at her residence.

Mrs. Ball was a member of Ider United Methodist Church.

Survivors include husband, the Rev. Jimmy Carl Ball; sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Sandy Ball, Flat Rock, Chris and Linda Ball, Ooltewah, Tenn.; grandchildren, Sabrina (Daniel) Long, Hannah Faith Ball, Jesse Ball, Le Ann Ball and Shawdon Gilbert; great-grandson, Adian Jeremiah Long; brothers, James Mardis, Jacksonville, Ala., Ralph Goswick, Sylacauga, Ala., Butch Goswick, Blount County, Ala.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. CST Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at Corner Stone Funeral Chapel with the Rev. J. Edmond Stallings officiating.

Burial will be in Beulah Chapel Cemetery.

Family will receive friends from 2 to 8 p.m. CST today and 10 a.m. CST until service time Tuesday.

FORT PAYNE — Tula Tipton Winkler, 92, passed away Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. CST today from the W.T. Wilson Funeral Chapel.

Burial to follow in Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville, Ala.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — James Cummings Jr. passed away Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009.

He was the beloved husband of the late Judy Mason Cummings, loving father of James (Toni) Cummings and the late Scott Cummings and proud grandfather of Caron, Andrew and Bryant.

Visitation is at Kutis Affton Chapel, 10151 Gravois, St. Louis, Mo., today from 5 to 8 p.m. CST.

Interment will be at 2 p.m. CST Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at Chattanooga Memorial Gardens.
