Some 800 construction and craft workers currently are on the Volkswagen automotive assembly plant site, an official said today.
Many even worked last weekend as they took advantage of the sunny weather as VW plans to start production in early 2011, said Steve Leach, the city’s public works administrator.
VW officials have said the site will soon hold more than 2,000 workers constructing the $1 billion facility.
Mr. Leach told the city’s Industrial Development Board that a huge, 60-ton electrical transformer will be delivered this week to the construction site. He said a temporary road had to be built to prepare to carry it to the proper location.
Made in Mexico, Mr. Leach said the company transporting the transformer needed permission from more than one state to truck it during daylight hours.
The board approved contracts related to the VW training academy, including for a number of robots.
