Fairmount Avenue residents acknowledge the Chattanooga Housing Authority has proposed to reduce the number of units in the Fairmount Apartments public housing renovation, but they say it isn’t enough to make the neighborhood safe for an increased population of children.
CHA officials and Fairmount Avenue residents will meet Thursday at 6 p.m. in the City Council meeting room to discuss the issue with elected officials. Housing authority officials will host a special called board meeting at 11:30 a.m. Friday to make a final decision about the apartments.
Several Fairmount Avenue residents attended the housing authority’s monthly board meeting today. Some residents say they would prefer the authority build single-family housing or “village” housing, not unlike the Villages at Alton Park development.
Because of residents’ concerns CHA is proposing to reduce the number of units at Fairmount from 48 units to 36. It’s also restricting the apartments to having only one and two bedrooms, instead of having two and three bedrooms as initially planned. However, the proposed changes depend on the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development giving its approval, CHA officials said.
