Gault game a surprise

The game plan going into last Saturday's home finale wasn't for Jare Gault to be a primary target for quarterback B.J. Coleman. But there the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga quarterback-turned-receiver was, making one big catch after another.

"He was the best wideout on the field the other day," UTC offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield said Monday. "He's (6-foot-3), 215 pounds, absorbs the ball when the ball's thrown to him, smooth, fast, physical.

"I wish I could have him one more year just to play wideout and have a whole summer to get him ready to play wideout."

With fellow senior Clint Woods out with a shoulder injury, someone had to pick up the slack in the receiver corps, and Gault did that and more. He had one catch all season going into The Citadel game and caught seven passes for 70 yards in the Mocs' 31-28 win.

"I thought I might get it once or twice, but I was very excited," Gault said. "Once I started catching some out routes and then I got that one across the middle, I was pumped up."

Gault had three short catches in the first half and caught two balls on UTC's second drive of the third quarter. His fifth catch of the game went for 27 yards on third-and-15.

Four of Gault's seven receptions resulted in first downs.

Gault wasn't the only former UTC quarterback to contribute, either. Sloan Allison had two catches all season before The Citadel game, when he had a 9-yard reception on second-and-10 and caught the two-point-conversion pass that cut the lead to 28-21.

"If somebody would have told me back in August that Jare Gault and Sloan Allison were going to have the most crucial plays of the game against The Citadel and help you win the game," Satterfield said, "I'd have laughed at you.

"I'd have said that Sloan might have had some catches here or there, but for Sloan and Jare to do what they did was awesome."

Camay, Williams picked

UTC senior kicker Craig Camay and freshman defensive end Josh Williams earned Southern Conference player-of-the-week honors, the league announced Monday.

Camay kicked three field goals and executed an onside kick during the Mocs' come-from-behind win over The Citadel. Camay has made 16 field goals this season, and UTC has recovered five of his six onside kicks.

Williams, a starter since the third game of the season, got the weekly freshman honor for his seven tackles, including 2 1/2 for loss. One of the tackles for loss was his seventh sack of the season, a UTC freshman record.

The Mocs have now had eight player-of-the-week honors this season, another school record.

Extra points

The Mocs have allowed just nine sacks all season, and Coleman has thrown 188 passes without a sack -- a stretch that dates back to the Georgia Southern game on Oct. 17. Only Wofford (eight) has allowed fewer sacks, and UTC has attempted 385 passes to just 102 by the Terriers. ... The Mocs received 10 points in this week's Sports Network poll and two points in the coaches' poll. UTC is the only SoCon team receiving votes other than No. 6 Appalachian State and No. 10 Elon.
