McCallie swimmer Ryan, lacrosse trio sign

McCallie School senior Sean Ryan, who represented the United States as an open-water swimmer in the World Championships earlier this year in Italy, signed scholarship papers this morning to continue his career at the University of Michigan.

The decision came down to Michigan and Southern California for Ryan, who also made official visits to Florida, Georgia and Texas and an unofficial visit to Auburn. The 6-foot-3, 150-pound Hixson resident won’t turn 18 until August.

He was joined for a ceremony in the McCallie dining hall by lacrosse players T.J. Kemp, Charlie Graff and Parker Mincy, each of whom had signed NCAA Division I scholarship papers since Sunday. Kemp is headed to North Carolina, Graff to Vermont and Mincy to Presbyterian.

Mincy is a boarding student from Marietta, Ga., and Graff came to McCallie from Chicago. Kemp is the son of McCallie lacrosse coach Troy Kemp. The Blue Tornado are the reigning state champions.
