Warm days are over

Jacob Hall played with his classmates in Coolidge Park on Monday, part of their South Pittsburg Elementary School field trip.

Nearby, his parents and sister enjoyed the sunshine.

But the streak of good weather is about to end, at least temporarily, according to local meteorologists.

"We've had a very nice, warm pattern the past several days since the weekend. High pressure over the Southeast has kept us warm -- unseasonably warm in the afternoon -- kept us dry and has helped us hold back any systems coming in from the west," said NewsChannel 9 meteorologist David Glenn.

"But now weakening high pressure is going to allow for an area of low-pressure to begin trying to affect us by today or Wednesay. It will stay well north of us, but it's going to be close enough to where we are going to have clouds and showers. I don't think the rain is going to be heavy rain like last week, but (it will) bring temperatures down a bit," he added.

Although the thermometer hovered in the low 70s over the weekend, temperatures are projected to drop to the high 50s today with a 50 percent of showers, according to the National Weather Service, but Shawn O'Neill, meteorologist in Morristown, Tenn., said he suspects it's going to be warmer.

In the past few days, temperatures reached almost-record highs because of a high pressure system left by Tropical Storm Ida, he said.

The normal high for this time of the year is 61 and the low is 39, Mr. O'Neill said. On Sunday, the high was 73, only four degrees lower than the record.

And although a cold front is coming this way, average daily temperatures should remain above normal due to warmer nights, he said.

"It looks like, until through Thanksgiving, there's not anything exceptionally cold moving through the area," Mr. O'Neill said.

On Monday, Nicole Hall; her husband, Stanley; and their 4-year-old Jazmine said they were taking advantage of the nice weather.

"It's springlike weather," said Mrs. Hall, wearing a short-sleeve T-shirt. "It's very different."

Mr. Hall said Jazmine has been playing in the water and in her sand box, although the little girl said she prefers cold weather and snow.

"When it's hot, you can't see," she told her parents as she covered her eyes from the sun.
