McCallie School is a TSSAA Division II school but was an NCAA Division I focal point Tuesday morning. In addition to swimmer Sean Ryan signing with Michigan, three lacrosse players were honored in the McCallie dining hall for moving on to the top level in their sport.
Parker Mincy joined previously announced state championship teammates T.J. Kemp and Charlie Graff in receiving Division I scholarships. All had followed through on their commitments with signings in the last couple of days.
Mincy, a second-team all-state player and the Blue Tornado's second-leading scorer the last two years, signed with Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., where former McCallie standout James Cupo is now a freshman.
Midfielder Kemp committed more than a year ago to North Carolina, and fellow first-team all-stater Graff, a defender, committed to Vermont late this past spring.
Another key member of the McCallie attack, Zack Ward, has committed to Division III power Salisbury University in Maryland, according to McCallie coach Troy Kemp.
"They have at least five national championships," said Coach Kemp, whose son passed up Johns Hopkins, Ohio State and Colgate among others to go to UNC. "And we have four other players going through the recruitment process now."
Another member of the 2009 McCallie state championship squad, Scott Hughes, is now at the Air Force Academy.
The 5-foot-7, 155-pound Mincy -- a boarder from Marietta, Ga. -- also looked at St. Joseph's in Philadelphia, Sacred Heart in Connecticut and Lynchburg College.
Presbyterian, he said, "is a little bit closer to home, and when I went on campus, I fell in love with it."
He wrestled as a ninth-grader in his first year at McCallie but has concentrated on lacrosse since then, and he has exceptional skills, as Coach Kemp said.
"Troy and Charlie both are football players also. Parker is a smaller guy but he's a fantastic finisher," Coach Kemp said. "He puts the ball in the net. And he's a left-hander, which is an asset in lacrosse because it balances the field.
